Under The Black Moon

for Opposing Force

10th November 2012

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

Can you believe your luck? Travelling in a transport plane you get shot down!

You survive and things only get worse.

Work your way through the area into the base and do whatever you have to do to get picked up.

Take you time as the enemy has had plenty of time to prepare for your arrival (not that they were expecting YOU)

This was February 2016’s Classic of the Month mod.

  1. Okay, the text is taken from the submission. The details were sent to me. Thanks kkaizi.

I’ve played about half thess maps and I am having fun. It’s good so far but as kkazi says, it’s quite hard.

Enjoy and don’t forget to rate it when you have finished it. I will.

  2. I’m not kkazi (lol) kkazi is the email of the author, I’m just the guy who submmited this mapackage.

And I was about to write “B-Dama” but I thought it was server hosting the site.

    Have fun people.

I would like to try this mod, BUT I don’t understand Japanese!! Which folder do these files go into?? My HL1 or the Gearbox (OP) folder??

  4. On mine its its
    C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\username\opposing force\gearbox\maps

  5. Senator33

    Unzip .bsp files to gearbox/maps

Unzip the .nod files to gearbox/maps/graphs

I think there’s no end sequence, so, when nobody is shooting at you at the map force309 that’s it, you are done.

    -END OF SPOILER-

  7. AI

Thanks to both of you guys #4 & 5, since I only run the Sierra version, senator33 your instruction filled the bill, it works fine!!
Kinda funny, I’ve had these addons since they were released but never used extra maps/mods with them (except for HL1) Oh well, better late than never!!

Does anyone know where to get a Walkthrough. I’m stuck in force305 after falling down to do battle with a Gargantua and two Masters, I used the barnacle to climb back up. Now I,ve investigated every nook, cranny, and ceiling tile and don,t know where to go.

    Spoiler alert
    David4255, There’s a cable/rope hanging down. And a cracked door.
If you get any further, like to the power generator, give me a clue how to turn it on. Please!

Afro-dude – yes there is a clear end sequence.Very very good mod. Great design and gameplay. Very hard (but not annoying) clever puzzles. Huge environments to explore. Extended battles with well thought out enemy placement. Enormous end battle against an Apache, and an Osprey dropping Black Ops in different places. The best designed battle of its type I reckon.
4.5/5. Only disappointment was that it ended!

I’d like to add that there is an end sequence. It’s been ages since I played this, but if I remember correctly, once you have defeated all the enemies you should use a radio located in a small building next to the aircraft landing pad. The radio won’t help you if enemies are currently attacking. No worries if people missed that though, I don’t think you missed anything other than end credits and music.I remember really enjoying this mod. I found it very hard… but that may have been because I was trying to keep all of my soldier allies alive, I built up a massive army of friendly soldiers. Some players dont” care about allies though, they just use friendly soldiers and human shields, hehe, so such players may find the mod easier. I strongly recommend this well-made Opposing Force mod.

    I tried this one. Briefly.

There’s no health counter, and once I pick up a new weapon, I can’t access any of my other weapons. Also, game crashed to desktop during an ordinary, unscripted sequence of play.

Great mod, the mapping is almost super and gameplay is brilliant. It’s a pretty large mod too, few maps, but they are large as *BEEP*! However, it’s a pretty hard mod (at least on hard mode) and sometimes you can be out of ammo on a weapon for a pretty long time. Get this mod, it’s as good as Nuclear Winter.

  14. Could somebody help me get started? I put the folder in “C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\username\opposing force\gearbox\maps”. I restarted steam, it is not listed on my games. So I then started “Opposing Force” and open my console, type in “map force300” without the quotes. It still didn’t work. 🙁
    What am I doing wrong?

  15. Cant launch games from the gearbox folder it has to be done in the HL1 folder.I’ll upload what I just made that you can just drop in your half-life folder for a steam install.Gimmie 15 minutes and it will be in this thread.

I really need help! Im stuck in an area with a water river thing (inside) and theres an elevator in 02 area and there are 3 levers that control A, B, and C. they just move these catwalk things up and down and I really dont know what to do. Please help

  20. You need to increase the water level and that is done by shooting the blockade in the upper wall where water is supposed to come down.

  21. awkook

Im in the pit where you fight the gargantua and the 2 alien controllers. But now where do I go?

  22. Anonymous

I just killed the gargantua and I am now back up with the 3 soldiers…but what do I do next ? I’ve searched everywhere…

    1. Anon_218550

You must go up on the ladder and throw the grenade in to the place with black pipes. after the explosion you must go down, activate the generator and go back in to the lift….

      1. I don’t have anymore handgrenades left. What do I do. I even tried the tripmines. Nothing will work. I’m really stuck.

        1. Dirk

I didn’t use a handgrenade. I just shot through the gap in the mesh with a pistol to free the blockage.

  23. Phillip's Favourite

WOW, this is a fantastic piece of work. There’s so much detail and thought that has gone into the design.

New mappers would do well to study this release.

Most parts could have easily come from the game itself, although it’s not without its problems.

Firstly, I had to cheat in the sewer section. I am pretty sure I know what I was supposed to do but just couldn’t do it. For some reason I couldn’t get the floating crate out of the area. I increased the liquid level and try to raise it to the floor level and push it, but it wouldn’t move. The main gate wouldn’t open, so I was stuck. if you know who to do it, please tell me.

The second area was after I killed the Gargantua. There is a rope and two floors visible. The higher door has a crack in it, but I couldn’t see that from the rope. You must jump to the ledge and smash the left-hand door.

Besides those two issues everything else worked perfectly.

You can see from the screenshots the variety of locations and designs.

There are a few secret areas and I found one properly and one when I noclipped to solve the rope section. There are probably more.

All in all, this is a first rate release and deserves more attention. In fact, later today, it will be the first entry into the Opposing Force Hall of Fame.

    1. In the sewer section, there is an area with three small bridges that you can move up and down. What is the solution to this part, is that the area you were stuck?

      1. Yes, that’s where I was stuck. But only two bridges worked.

        1. I was stuck there for awhile too. You have to
Open the valve down the corridor, shoot inside the big pipe to free the metal box, put the box on top of the sunken grate, and pull the lever to lift it up. You can then push the metal box into the canal. Push the box all the way through the canal to the very end and use the box to climb up into the next area
1. That’s the problem. I knew what I had to do but the crate got stuck every single time and I tried a lot of times, at least 25. So at that point I thought perhaps I was doing something wrong and reloaded from earlier saves and did it again. Nothing worked.

            1. Unq

Me too. The crate would raise up but then I couldn’t push it anywhere – it was stuck to the platform. As I mentioned I think it’s a variation of the Half-Life elevator bug that makes you get stuck sometimes. Clever puzzle, though.

            2. And I have got the same problem in this location.

              1. Hec

Have the very same problem with the crate I noclipped that part.

      2. I have the solutions to this box thing. The only way to push the box is to do it underwater. I had no problem pushing it if I did it underwater. I was able to push it into position at the rock that blocks the way to the dynmite. Push it until you get to a point where you can climb on to it and jump up on the pipe to your left. Once on the pipe, you can walk on the pipe and down on to the platform. After you do that you can make your way to the plunger and set off the dynmite destroying the rock.

        1. Unq

Yes you can push the box underwater, but the problem I had was getting it past the small lift that is broken (stuck in the up position) in the canal. To get it past you have to lift the box on one of the other lifts to ground level, and that is where the box always got stuck for me.

          1. EXACTLY! The same happened to me and I think nearly everybody else.

  24. Play It Later

This was quite good actually, especially considered the rest of the entries so far has been lackluster. Though I had some issues, one which Phillip already brought up regarding the crate in the sewers; it was pretty obvious what to do but the crate would get stuck whenever you activated the small platform to make it rise.
Another annoyance I had was the gate with the code, seriously I ran around for a great amount of time trying to figure out a way to open it but I just couldn’t find any hint or code to it. Feeling my blood pressure going up I decided to just noclip through the gate, not something that I particularly endorse but I just had no idea how to open it.

Either way, I had fun with it. Great design with some large and memorable parts. A few times it was a bit diminishing in quality especially the office and dormitories compared to other areas such as the sewers and the parts surrounding the Gargantua section which looked great.

    1. seriously I ran around for a great amount of time trying to figure out a way to open it but I just couldn’t find any hint or code to it.

I purposefully left a screenshot with the number visible. For future reference, if I find a number, I always leave a screenshot of it.

We are Corporal “Daniel” Shephard and our chopper (unsurprisingly) crash-lands, leaving us stranded in the middle of the New Mexico desert.

From the moment we hit the ground, the extremely high level of polish and detail in the level design is apparent. Environments look impressive, realistic and believable consistently throughout this entire mod.

The mod isn’t short either. Throughout our several hour journey we explore desert wastes, research labs, offices, sewers, Xen infested areas and more. Every conceivable environment is represented in full and well-realised in this mod. In fact, I would say this mod is actually a little too long as the gameplay seems a bit drawn out in a few places.

Gameplay-wise the mod is also very varied; we are given a good mix of different combat scenarios and more than one boss battle. The mod makes use of many Opposing Force enemies, plus we get to use the Barnacle and work alongside other soldiers in several places. There are also lots of new puzzles, they are straight forward for the most part but you WILL get stuck in some places. (I got stuck at the same places that Phillip mentioned as well as a couple of others.)

However as I mentioned earlier there are a few weaker segments which perhaps should have been cut. After the first “boss” (you’ll know it when you see it), things went downhill for me as the mod focuses almost exclusively on combat with the Black Ops. I know that this won’t be a problem for most people, but I found it too intense and frustrating to fight them for such an extended period of time.

With regard to the mod’s ending:
we have to take on both an Osprey and a chopper, the former of which can infinitely spawn Black Ops. There is also a very limited selection of ammo available in the area.
This ending was just annoying for me, I resorted to using cheats and I left the mod with a bad taste in my mouth.

Despite the problems, this was exactly what I hoped we would get to see in the OFNF. This is a brilliant mod and everyone should try it out.

    1. Unq

      Regarding the ending battle:
There is limited ammo, but there is also a mounted machine gun right where the Osprey drops off Black Ops, which you can use on the Osprey right away (I managed to take it down before it finished landing the first batch of operatives). See screenshot 120 too.
26. Play It Now!

For an OP4 set of maps this is above average, is well made and most importantly is was fun!

Whilst aspects of the gameplay were hard, for the most part it was doable and the looks made it an experience not a chore. The only problems I found were getting stuck in some places such as lifts, which needed noclip to become unstuck, also it looks like I was not the only one to be afflicted by the immovable crate in the sewers!

A lot of work and thought seem yo have gone into this and I can’t judge it down based on a few shortfalls, it is after-all free.

Here we have the best Op4 pack I’ve seen. Its fantastic design, great looks, and tough challenge are top-notch for me.

This superb pack shows you what can really be done with Opposing Force. I think it strikes the perfect middle between taking advantage of what Op4 offers (enemies, weapons) without overusing any of them. As I mentioned above, the maps look great. The maps have great architecture, excellent and often attractive lighting, and great loopback design – the pack is only 9 maps in total, but the intricate layouts make them feel much longer, again without overusing backtracking. Your path is generally linear, but there are a lot of opportunities for exploration and you’re often rewarded nicely for doing so.

One thing I really, really like about this pack is the superb use of the unique Opposing Force assets. Unlike many of the other Op4 maps out there, here we get to play with all of the Op4 weapons. And we even get the displacer, and we get to use it to awesome effect (more on this later). A ton of the unique Opposing Force enemies are here as well (sadly, Otis makes only a cameo and doesn’t get to do his comedy routine here). This pack is long enough and varied enough to handle using all of these weapons and enemies deftly, as opposed to smaller maps that feel the need to pack in every single Op4 weapon and enemy.

I also liked the challenge of these maps. As usual, the combat ramps up from easy to difficult over the entire set of maps. And I thought the finale battles were also well handled – a nice challenge without going overboard or making a “boss” fight for the climax. Be warned, there are some tough battles in here, and some even tougher ambushes where many enemies attack at once. It’s great fun but if combat isn’t your thing, perhaps try lowering the difficulty.

The puzzles in Under the Black Moon are all very well designed. A couple of them are made up of multiple stages. Unfortunately I had the same problem with the crate puzzle in the sewers, where I had to noclip to proceed. It’s the old Half-Life elevator bug in action again, I think.

The only other nitpick I have beyond the puzzle issue is that a couple of short cutscenes are used. One involving the Black Ops assault is supposed to be a camera’s view, but it holds on way too long. The other is used at the start of a particularly tough battle, seemingly to try and heighten the tension – I just felt it was awkward and out of place in an Opposing Force map.

I think the factor that really pushed my rating up to Personal Favorite was how the author handled the Marine squad members. Throughout this pack, you have various Marines in your squad at different times – and for the most part (assuming you can keep them alive), your squad can continue with you through the maps. I can only recall perhaps twice where you were forced to abandon your squad permanently (several times you have to scout ahead, but you’re usually able to clear the way for them to follow you later). This takes very careful map planning and shouldn’t be underestimated.

My other favorite factor: in at least one place if you use the displacer, you get to visit Xen and
free two Marines from captivity, who teleport back to Black Mesa and meet you there.
A brilliant and clever touch.

Play this pack, it’s the best set of Opposing Force maps I’ve played. Highly recommended.

I too had to use noclip because of the crate puzzle, but otherwise the mappack was pretty perfect! And I agree with Unq that is was very cool to finally have all the great OF assets again to play with, from the funny fellow marines over the new enemies to the new weapons. And man, I’d almost forgotten how perfect the latter fitted into the HL world, the normal ones and especially the bioweapons, which I personally like very much! Then again this all reminded me of how disappointed HL2 was in that regard. If you compare HL2 and the episodes with HL+OF it was one big step backwards in every way except for facial animations and physics! The enemies were bland and we didn’t even get the better HL weapons. What a shame!

  30. Play It Now!

Really well done little set of OF maps. Fiendishly difficult though. I played most of it on god mode because I wanted to finish. I found my ally soldiers would often attack me after any kind of battle or explosion; they would get confused and start shooting me. The puzzles were really good and the scenery on the walls made me laugh. When I started playing HL mods every one of them had a picture somewhere of Xena or Buffy the Vampire Slayer! So this was a blast from the past in that regard.

  31. Play It Later

The beginning is very pleasing: first we see intro text in Half-Life style, then we come to ourselves near the crashed helicopter in picturesque sunset mountains. We look around, find vest and a couple of clips, and then the radio starts to work, voice says that other soldiers need backup due to some worm creature.

Then we go through some cavern, which shows excellent design and progression, and nice small puzzle in the end. End of the tunnel has explosive crates, thanks to which we can make a fun “BADOOM!” event.

In the sewers, variety is nicely added by including flickering and colored lights. Helicopter which drops friendly soldier, second floor which drops hostile zombie are nice scripted events. Both were frightening for me, because due to previous mods I forgot that I’m playing Opposing Force and thought that helicopter is hostile. The truck ride near the end is cool, it’s funny how you quickly turn left and right before crashing.

Offices and laboratories are well made and interesting to explore. The friendly soldier followed me all the time and never got stuck anywhere, which is very good. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same about two friendly soldiers which I met after the maintenance sewers.

Great atmosphere is aided by nice lighting. Design looks original, but still similar to Black Mesa. There’s a good variety of different places. The layouts are well thought out. In the storage where we get after night outdoor area, I used a displacer and appeared in beautiful and original Xen place, which I enjoyed a lot.
Freeing soldiers from aliens
is a nice touch.

The gameplay is hard. Enemy placement, enemy count are overwhelming, and there are not enough medkits and batteries to make it even. That’s what I can’t say about sudden fight with Gargantua, which is fair due to our alien creature which serves as a grenade launcher.

In the maintenance sewers, I used the valve to let the water flow, then used the elevator to get to the control panel, which controls bridges, bridges B and C can be moved down, bridge A can’t. I didn’t understand what I need to do, I searched the area, but found nothing.
Returning to this mod after a couple of days, I looked at the cavein and realized that it requires a pushable object. But where can it be? I looked at the sewer tunnel which is closed by wooden planks, shot the planks, and a metal box came out of it. Thankfully, I didn’t have an evelator bug reported here.
What should we do after defeating the Gargantua? Once again I fruitlessly searched the area. Loading the next map through the console shown that I should use the surface access elevator, but it didn’t work.
And only when I started to explore the mod with noclip, I found a breakable evelator door.
Overall, this mod is worth checking out due to its excellent level design and atmosphere, but from time to time hard difficulty makes it feel like hard work, not entertainment. Chance that the player will have to use noclip is not good either.

  32. NOTICE: I didn’t complete this because it was too long but I think I played far enough to get a taste for it.

This mappack felt like something that Gearbox would make at times.

It was WAY too long however and really could have been cut down. I just gave up about half way through because I just got bored (I have finished this before though).

It was pretty cool that we actually got to use the Displacer to good use though.

The author of this great masterpiece give us the classic “Thank You for Playing” at the end of his mod, I can only say: Mr Developer don’t thank ME for this piece, I THANK YOU instead for such a great piece of quality and work.

I mean every little detail is in this whole long and challenging and also full of great combat and ennemied 8 maps!!!, I even noticed pnce one scientist open a lab gate with the retina reader and then the roof explodes, so killed the scientist, hiis neck was totally twisted as if he would be dead as in real life, then I tought: this mapper is great and also is really clever, I mean really really clever, the whole maps offer great puzzles who never are linear, they are very dynamic instead…, entretainment value is in the more than 2 hrs you are going to experience… till the last battle is a great and lovely ride.

I can even got a great trip with the displacer cannon at the end battle to a great and very useful place to continue my battle with energy recovered!”! 🙂

I give this a PF because it’s worthy of, it ozzes quality and definitely is one of the best of the OPF available, I thank Phillip for posting such a great work, and again to the author for this great clever piece!!

  34. Play It Later

I was hours into this, without an HEV suit, then saw when coming back here and looking at a few other’s comments and the screenshots, that there was a suit. I could either scrap all that and start again or continue as long as possible, which I did.

I played through to 308, killing waves of enemies from the plane, and then it become impossible without the suit and I had to give up. It was amazing to me I got that far, thanks to quick saves just about every kill, numerous replays etc., all the while swearing at the modder.

Now to me, IF the intention in ANY mod is to have an HEV suit available, then one way or the other, the mapper must ensure the player gets it. 90% of the time, the player starts out with the suit, or alternately the gameplay is linear until the suit is picked up. This is, to me, non-negotiable as it ruins the entire gameplay afterwards without the suit, but it wasn’t provided for in this mod.

Hence the rating which, despite all the positives, I consider generous because of this overriding design failure.

    1. Unq

I agree that it’s a must for HL and Op4 maps to give the player a suit and make sure. I’d also argue it’s a must to give a melee weapon as well, particularly if ammo is rare or if there are any crates to break. I totally understand your frustration, it’s too bad you missed the PCV right near the start and didn’t give yourself one later on (I’m assuming you didn’t look at the screenshots). Unfortunately this can color your entire experience, but I totally understand.

  35. Play It Later

This is my 4th review, For now on, i’m going to start doing something different, I start counting my deaths, Saves, Time and if i use god mode or noclip and how many times. I will only count deaths in maps/mods where i don’t die that much, And if i die a lot, I will cap it at 30 or so (It can change).

    Deaths: 30+
    Saves: 11
    God used?: Yes (3 times)
    Noclip used: Yes (1 time)

I consider my self a okey player, I don’t die that much in Half life, But i find this too goddamn hard,
There were 3 times that i need to use god mode, Cause i don’t know if its just me but, I really hate race x and black ops, Cause they just do too much damage and have so much health, And they are what you will be fighting for 9 maps, Cause the xen enemies (Most of them are a joke in comparison with race x) only appear at the beginning.

There are some places that i really dislike, Like the puzzle with the crate in the water, The gargantua fight and the elevator right after it or the ending (Which i can spare cause is the climax).

Beside the high difficulty, I will go as far as saying that this is one of the most professional looking GoldSource maps out there, The mapper know what the hell he/she is doing, It have really good enemy and weapon placement, And there where really few errors, This map have practically everything in OF, most NPC (Excluding bosses), most weapons and assets.

If it wasn’t for the difficulty, This will be perfect, Maybe its just that i suck at the game, But i need to use god mode 3 times, That i rage quit 2 times, And parts such as the gargantua boss fight that i don’t have that much fun, maybe for someone better than me play it, This is the best, But for me, I don’t enjoy it that much.

I want to re play it again some time later, And maybe my opinion will change.

  36. Wow, what a great mod! Good thing I didn’t stop with Half-Life, but also looked into Opposing Force mods 🙂

I just read how many people are having problems with the A-B-C-levers riddle in the sewers of the fourth map, and before people are unsure whether they are doing something wrong or they are actually suffering from a bug, here’s the solution that flawlessly worked for me:

    1) Unlock the metal crate by shooting in the hole.
    2) Turn the water wheel to bring the crate down into the water.
    3) Use levers B and C, so you can freely move the crate around.
    4) Move the crate to position C. (Do NOT move it to position B!)
    5) Use lever C to move the crate out of the water.
    6) Move the crate to position A and into the water.
    7) Move the crate to the opposite end of the water maze, into a hole.
    8) Climb on the crate and onto a rock.

Just finished this mod and it was a real blast! There are quite a few things I always found superior about Opposing Force, when compared to Half-Life (for example the weapons), and this mod makes perfect use of these. It’s polished, it’s brilliant, it’s long, but not too long, and I agree with everything Unq writes in his competent and detailed review – absolutely top 5 stuff!

  38. I was gonna make a video with this, but if I did it would have been a 3 hour death montage. This mappack is merciless. Theres so many enemies and barely enough health and ammo to keep me alive, even while sucking medics dry. I don’t ever remember any mod that made me thirsty for mp5 ammo like this one did. And dem sandvich ambushes.

Maps are great and some of the pozzles are pretty complicated. But this mappack is all about hardcore kombat. And I still havent completed it. Wish me luck

  39. JC

This map-pack starts off with challenging and solid gameplay. Unfortunately, as you go deeper into the mission, it turns into a quite difficult (read unfair) task to carry out, plagued by utterly exaggerated series of ambushes that make this mod a quite frustrating experience for the most part.
Level design is wonderful though, and the puzzles are challenging and really interesting.

All in all this mod is worth the download, but be prepared for some annoying moments when you decide to play it.

    Score: 6/10

  40. Play It Later

I almost feel like I’m missing something when I browsed through peoples ratings above. Don’t get me wrong, I really really liked this map pack. I thought there were times that it didn’t flow well and somethings didn’t seem to gel or be obvious. But the overall design and ideas are superb. I liked the locations and had a trip down memory lane!

However, I did feel there were times when it was unbalanced and rather OTT in difficulty. Which would be fine if health etc was left behind in those tough battle areas. Hmm perhaps my skills are lagging compared to the others here? A good download and one I really enjoyed but I also struggled with it…

Holy crap i loved this mod. It was so cool how the creator implemented so many things from all the gold source half-life games to make one great one. I enjoyed every second of it. The ending is so cool and i totally recoomend you play it.

  42. Personal Favourite

This is an incredible piece of work, hard and inventive, which uses OpFor assets to the maximum.
You’ll fight countless Race X monsters, Black Ops, get a boss fight against a Garg… There’s also the clever use of some OpFor weapons/tools like the barnacle,

the fights are also hard and it is advised to keep some of the buddies with you, for example the engineer, if you keep him alive, he’ll open you some optional doors for goodies. There is a moment where I had 3 buddies with me and I kept them alive as long as possible,

also the Displacer in some places can teleport you to mini-Xen levels, where you can get some good stuff and even deliver some fellow Marines.

It has everything in it, in Valve-quality, to never get you bored, puzzles, vehicles, various battles…

The final fight is against 2 black ops vehicles, an Apache and a V22 Osprey, depending on how you’re good and fast, it can be real quick or be a real pain in the butt.

Either way, a must-play for every HL fan in the world, a clever and inventive piece of work.

Very nice map. It feels like a ‘hardcore’ variant of Opposing Force. Puzzles became slightly more complex and combats became much harder (especially the Gargantua fight in the middle part and the Osprey fight in the last part). I couldn’t handle the last fight so I used godmode cheat to ignore the black ops and kill the Osprey.
The visual of the map is very good, and scripted events operate well. I had a hard time killing many black ops with small health, but I enjoyed the map pretty much. Enjoyable map for Opposing Force fans and hardcore players.

I usually play Half-Life on medium but for some reason I couldn’t figure out how to change the difficulty on Gauge. I’m still kinda new to this lol. Anyways this is a pretty fun set of maps. I do think it was a bit hard to figure out how to progress at a few points, and some of the turret placement got kind of annoying. Otherwise the enemy encounters are very well paced, and the amount of ammo was just enough to get time to use all the weapons without ever giving me too much. The Gargantua fight was a clever highlight.

    1. Unq

For me that was always the main problem with using MapTap/Gauge – it doesn’t let you change the difficulty.

      1. Oh ok, I wasn’t sure if there was a way or not. Thanks for the info!

  46. I went into this mapset with no information, I hadn’t read any reviews or seen screenshots and wow, I thoroughly loved my time with it. If you like OpFor and want more then Black Moon is what you’re after.

One of it’s strong points is the length. It’s actually reasonably long with plenty of variety in location, combat encounters and set pieces. The detailing is superb and the progression is intuitive. I tend to get lost easily but I had no issues with Black Moon.

Great mod, it’s fairly lengthy , has lots of combats, is balanced, has top quality maps
The Gargantua battle was a little difficult, but other than that it’s amazing mod.

    Wow, just… wow!

For a 2002 campaign – its a real treat to play! It took me almost 3.5 hours to complete on ‘Hard’ difficulty (fights were fair, mind you!), but it might take you less time on lower difficulties there’s also multiple secrets around, so go get them!

    Level design

Big, wide open levels, tons of stuff to shoot at. To be honest, I got stuck two times in entire playthrough:

    1. I did not expect a puzzle on one of the levels, where you need to control bridges.

    2. There’s also one moment on one of the levels I disliked — after you power-up generator, enemies start spawning non-stop, so I had to abandon my little shootout and ran as fast as possible (got no ammo left).

All in all, I loved how massive and pretty levels were.
