24th April 2011

After waking up in a dentist’s chair in the middle of nowhere there’s only one appropriate course of action to take: escape. This is the surreal dream-world of Insomnia. Or will you be trapped forever in the Red Room or perhaps the winding streets of Paranoia City?

This is another one of those “weird” maps, where nothing seems to make sense. Everything is all mixed up and you even get to ride the train – VERTICALLY!

I am sure I missed areas and rooms, so this one has some replay value.

You can’t really review maps like this in the same way as other maps, because stuff that would be “wrong” in those maps is “right” in these. There is no obvious flow and nothing is real. I am just really glad my dreams aren’t anything like this!

Definitely recommended to play once, but don’t go looking for realism as it’s not to be found here.

2. Is it a scary, shit your pants mod?

3. kennyist

Although this map has no point, no goal… or well anything sane. I think its a great map… And very weird/abstract. The creator has ..well .. a weird imagination to create this.

I say this is a must play, because its something different, good and seems like it required allot of imagination at times.

4. Play It Now!

Pretty surreal stuff. If you liked the level design of the gas-induced hallucination sections of Life’s End (remember Life’s End?), Mistake of Pythagoras, or Peaces Like Us, you’ll like this. The gameplay is pretty minimal, but it’s a lot of fun to look at, which more than makes up for it, in my mind.

Also, to those who are interested: the author says this map is for Half-Life 2, but it works fine with Episode 2.

5. Play It Now!

Maps like these, despite not having the best level design or anything of the likes, are one of the most hard and genius out there. It requires a lot of play testing and patience to get most of the illusions right, and good entity work. As incredible as it sounds, my head actually started to hurt at the vertical train scene for some reason. Really fascinating. I enjoyed most of it, but only wish there were more memorable scenes, something that would make me say “Wow..” other than “What the Fu-“. But the second is probably the intention of those sort of maps. Still, an amazing experience.

6. Play It Now!

A delightful, highly entertaining map. I had no idea where I was, or was going next. Some bizarre situations. The map had me smiling and enjoying the experience, or whatever it was! Play it now and see what the comments are all about!

7. Play It Now!

I was one of the tester’s for this map and the whole time I was astounded by the detail and , gosh just the absolute deranged goodness of this map. Everytime I play I try to forget everything and go through it as if it were my first 🙂
PLAY IT NAO!

8. Personal Favourite

Maps based on abstract structures are the best. Theres no guide to tell you what you should be doing. Do you want to place a statue on a rail and make it do a barrelroll ? DO IT .
Want to make buildings fly around like lego blocks ? DO IT !

This map is taking crazyness to a whole new level , I dont exactly know what but something in this map forces me to replay it everytime , and im still not sure if I found all the things in it.

PERSONAL FAV !

Play it now!
This oozes with randomness. This map has several … tributaries, there are loads of doors to go through so there is re-playability. There are a lot of ideas in this, and the sound gives these ideas a creepy atmosphere. Sometimes you may be a little scared. Actually there was a
poisonous zombie behind a fence
and just seeing it without it attacking you made me feel wary, however ive tackled them many times before so I didnt worry, but then I turned the corner and WOAH
poison crab leapt at me
I was shocked for the first time in ages!

Anyway, its a weird but clever map, play it.

1. Hec

haha, yes I was scared too with one zombie in a white mad’s room, so u see that’s why im saying this modder could do a respectable horror mod or some few maps…. there’d be cool to play that, oh I think I have to play some horror mod to fill my eager, for those sort of modding…

10. Play It Now!

Wow, I really enjoyed this map! I like the abstract theme, especially the upside-down and horizontal-vertical rooms. The colored lasers reminded me a bit of Research & Development.
Although there wasnt that much action in this map, it was sufficient. However, it shouldnt be less, otherwise it would become more an art-map. The end didnt feel really delight to me, but maybe that was the case because I was enjoying the map and I didnt want to finish it yet!

Ow,and Philip, thanks for your site. I already used it for quite some time as main source for downloading SP Half-life 2 mods/maps, but I finally decided to register and to add my opinion about some mods.

Play It Now!

cool map so wierd in the line of the great forever tomorrow style but soo much shorter, what can I say I like funky wierd maps, so play it and have fun if u have alredy finished the fantastic PORTAL2 and therefore u don’t have so much more to play, i’d love to see some horror map or mod from this modder because he maybe would made an interesting work…

12. Pablo

Kudos to Shadgrimgrvy for the time & effort in making Insomnia.
Imaginatively designed map, but there are few threats and there is little use for the weapons supplied. The upside-down rooms reminded me of a Half-Life mod (I can’t recall which one). For the most part, progression through the map is linear, so I doubt there are any unexplored areas by the time you finish. Worth a quick play, but only once IMO.

13. Play It Now!

This map is definetly worth your attention. It IS non-tradional map and thats why I like it !

14. Play It Now!

This map was fantastically abstract, scary, and well-playable! Reminded me of zuhhh.bsp, minus the 5 second sound clips scattered around. It was visually appealing, and with a curious eye, motivated me to think about “why is that tree there?”, “what’s behind this door?”, or “why is this hallway slightly different from the others?”.

The mod featured some odd objects that seemed to be of no purpose, but nevertheless, they were there for the alternative style of a Half Life 2 map. I extremely love these kinds of maps. I even thought it was a mod! Good job.

15. Play It Now!

Loved this map for all the reasons previously posted by others, well made weird and delightful. thanks to the author keep up the fine work and most of all the style of mapping you’ve done, its a treat

16. I like Trains. :3

Anyone who likes such abstract levels should definitely try: http://www.moddb.com/mods/korsakovia

17. Play It Now!

That was an experience for sure. Nothing exceptionally scary about it but it had the right feel to put you on edge, I’m not sure I’m educated enough to get all the references caringly inscribed in this levels design but there is something out there for everyone. It played well, a nice prescription of weapons are provided but enemies are scarcely about to use them but there is action. My only niggle was a certain section where I had to use no-clip to work-around a stuck NPC blocking my path but for such a structurally complex map it’s forgivable, especially with so many redeeming features.
Finding the melon machine is a must do!
Overall a 4.5/5, not perfect, but a damn good example of what a psychological thriller map can achieve in source.

18. Play It Now!

One the most original map I ever played. I already played “dreams levels” but they were often part of a a bigger mod.Very immersive and non-logical ambiance that make you can’t stop playing. Mapping is excellent and very well detailed.
I didn’t seen Inception but I suppose this map is inspired of.

19. Kaiaatsel

Love it!
This must be what Dr Freeman’s nightmares are like — it looks almost like some sort of wierd afterlife where you don’t know you’re dead.
I can’t figure out what to do though — but I think illogical actions are the point.

Gives me some great ideas for the haunted level in the mod I’m planning.

10/10

20. Personal Favourite

You better think twice before passing this one up. It’s all brain whack, no realism. The only problem is the annoying Rebels, they keep getting in the way.

21. Play It Now!

This mod is nuttier than a sack of squirrels!
I rediscovered this map checking through my HL2 map folder. I had forgotten how weird this was and such a refreshing change from the usual shoot and runs. There is something about a car slowly rotating in mid air on a dark street!
Wild and wacky fun with some violent shooting action thrown in to keep you on your toes and some pretty lights! Play and enjoy and then play again when you feel the need for a mind warp………

1. Rikersbeard

Wow, just found the watermelon machine. What a surprise when I pulled the lever and all hell broke loose! I’ve played this mod six times and this was the first time I found this!

22. Personal Favourite

I loved this so much. It reminds me of some older, funnier and cheesier Half-Life mods.

Your arsenal is diverse but the number of enemies is quite low. If only we had some more combat mixed between these weird moments the mod revolves around. The rebels also pose a challenge in progressing further but they can be simply killed.

Play it. Love it. Live it. This is now officially my 1st favorite Half-Life 2 mod.

23. Personal Favourite

played the Gmod version of this map series back when i first got Gmod (so, 2013 i think) loved them then, love them now, i loved the mixture of creepiness, weirdness, and aesthetics that went into the maps, i loved the combat, (nothing better than a firefight over the void!) what i would love to see, is Shadagrimgrvy and Miiga get together on a collar project! xD

24. Play It Now!

THATS gotta be one of the weirdest maps I’ve ever played. Loved it.
I actually thought to myself this must be what its like to be insane AND then i found myself in that padded cell lol talk about perfect timing. Anyhow, the room after this had a blue door which I couldn’t get by. Does this open or is there a switch I’ve missed? Anyhow, I noclipped through…

Really good map to play the once. (liked the trains!)

25. Play It Now!

It’s confusing and doesn’t make any sense. And yet, that seems to be the entire point.

I’m not sure what it’s all supposed to mean, other than to be a representation of insanity, perhaps, given it ends with you in a padded room. But this map could symbolize any number of things. Whatever it does happen to mean, it’s pretty cool.

It’s mainly wandering in surreal, and somewhat eerie, environments. There’s some combat, but it’s only a small part of the map.

Highly recommended if you’re looking for something visually distinct and unique.

26. Play It Now!

I love the surreal design of the map. I especially like the vertical train riding,

1. Unq

Recommendation was removed, you have to at least write a reaction or basic thoughts on the experience.

27. Personal Favourite

This is my most personal favorite map, giving me tons of late 2000s nostalgia and old Garry’s Mod days. Yes, I played this on Garry’s Mod and never have I ever had fun with my first impression to one of the first custom hl2 maps I’ve played.
