Bear Party: Adventure

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

15th December 2019

Have you ever dreamed of playing as a Care Bear? And getting to murder other Care Bears? Then have I got the mod for you!

Bear Party: Adventure is the latest release from Klems, prolific Source modder and of course overall winner of The Hammer Cup 2017.

Author’s notes:

I have been working on this weird ass source mod for over a year now. It’s mostly complete (some assets needs to be redone, need voice recordings as well), so I’m releasing it now to get feedback. It’s a full singleplayer campaign with 5 maps, fairly long (between 1 to 2 hours), with custom mechanics, weapons and enemies. There’s a few cutscenes and some story, some puzzle and parkour, but it’s mostly a lot of bunnyhopping around and blowing up carebears. Go play it and (hopefully) post feedback here!

This was April 2022’s Classic of the Month mod.

  1. ever since Phillip left, the site has been slowly dying.

    1. Well, in fairness to Don, all he ever was going to do was update the site for major releases. Without somebody doing almost daily work, the site is bound to feel like it’s not as active. There’s also the fact that less and less maps and mods are being made. of course, once “Half-Life: Alyx” comes out I suppose there will be a LOT of maps released. Whether Don adds those is up to him. I know that I probably wouldn’t because even if I were still gaming, I wouldn’t have been able to afford a VR headset.

  2. This “11 y.o. crap” you’re referring to possesses more than just cartoony visuals. The level design is top-notch, but that’s to be expected from an author who won THC2017 by a landslide on most competitions. I enjoy seeing more out-of-the-box visual and gameplay styles, the same-old Half-Life 2 style in most maps nowadays has grown old for me imo. If cartoony visuals aren’t your thing, that’s fine, but don’t knock it until you try it.

  3. Further to ThatsRidonkulous’ answer, if I were still gaming, I would have definitely added this mod. When somebody makes something unusual, and even more so when it is made by Klems, it deserves promotion. I obviously haven’t played it, but I suggest you try it.

  4. Unq

Tell you what, you’re welcome to not visit the site if you don’t like what is posted.

This mod was just released, it’s not 11 years old. Engage brain before speaking, no offense.

    1. I think he meant it was made by an 11 year old.

      1. Unq

Well that’s even more embarrassing. This is one of the most fun and polished Source mods in years – and dare I say Hall of Fame worthy.

    2. Anon_1823687

      I shall engage my brain?

You should do that, before you insult other people.
This mod was released 2011, read it on MOD DB.
I don’t waste my time with insulting you back, so now go bite in your table edge.

      1. Nope. That was just “Bisounours Party”. If you had read the description, you would see it is a multiplayer mod. This mod “Bisounours Party: Adventure” is single player and has been in production over the past year by a developer of the multiplayer edition. This is not a hard thing to verify.

      2. hero

when will be some ville competition?

  5. Personal Favourite

A strange and potentially polarising aesthetic shouldn’t discourage anyone from giving this mod a go. Combat is fast and difficult, requiring a lot of movement throughout each arena with every fight. An automatic bunnyhop system makes navigating the environments an absolute blast, every stage is carefully crafted to be fun to jump around at high speeds.
Whilst the cartoony style clearly isn’t for everyone, every section has very carefully crafted visuals with some exceptional large vistas and setpieces, as well as complex AI scripting to keep the shooting varied with every fight.

If you’re at all a fan of old school arena FPS, I’d highly advise putting aside any preconceptions about the mod based on the screenshots and give it a chance.

    (personally I love the aesthetic)

  6. Wesp5

Very weird mod, but cool and quite playable! I have only one thing to critize that maybe the author should fix in an update: in one of the wizard’s tests a sign says that jumping plays a melody. I took me ages to recognize that only jumping to my death from the floating island worked! This should either be changed to normal jumping or the sign should somehow reflect this.

    1. fred

I understand the bell puzzle but I’m tone deaf – all the bells sound the same to me. Can anyone give me the sequence?

      1. The full sequence is hidden somewhere in the area (close to the sign, you’ll have to jump). I added it for tone deaf people actually.

        1. Fred

Thanks for the clue – I would have never found it without the hint. Great mod, by the way!

  7. JamaicanDave

It less what you said and more they way you said it. The comment comes across as derogatory and sticking no offense at the end doesn’t absolve that.

    1. Heinz

I added “imo”, so why does it come as derogatory? I don’t understand why people can’t say their opinions without being insulted immediately…you people are so influenced by politics and don’t see the wood, because of too many trees.
I don’t like these comicesque mods and I like to spread my opinion, if somebody does not cope with that, he/she should shut down the internet and go live in the woods.
And why the hell do persons take opinions about a game/mod personal? something wrong with their life or self-confidence?
I wasn’t bullying anybody, so whats the matter? To those persons who take it personally, go get a life, job and/or friends, instead of raging about other peoples opinion.

      1. Unq

If you can’t see why immediately complaining about the mod I chose to post, and immediately calling that mod ‘crap’ without even KNOWING what the mod is – let alone trying it – then I don’t know what to say. The mod developer is a regular here, and as the post says, winner of the Hammer Cup a couple years ago. Yeah, insulting his hard work without even a try – that’s derogatory.

If you don’t like the comic book cartoon style, FINE. Don’t play it. But also don’t go insulting it by calling it crap, either.

  8. Hi guys, downloaded and shows up in Steam…fine…however, click on it to open the game and my monitor crashes (which is actually a wide screen TV)…twice now. Goes to black screen, I turn the monitor off then back on, goes to white screen. Re boot the computer and all my desktop icons are in a heap in the middle of the screen, but at least I can see something other than a black or white screen. Is this a known bug ? I’ll try playing something else through steam, but if that’s OK then I really don’t know. Was looking forward to having a go at this as well.

    1. Unq

Make sure you’ve set the Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer to ‘upcoming’. And try running the SDK Base by itself once (just get to menu then quit). Then try running this mod.

      1. yeah, done all that and other mods work fine that also require the same thing..

        1. Go into the sourcemods/bisounew/cfg folder, then delete “config.cfg” and “init_graphics.cfg”. Re-launch the mod. Does this fix the issue?

          1. I’ll get back to you on that Klems, no time now tonight…

            1. Anon_1824030

try launching the mod with the “-windowed” option as well (right click, set launch options) if what I suggested doesn’t work

          2. First, thank you, Klems, for this wonderful gift to the mod world. I believe anyone who plays it will enjoy their playing time and appreciate the effort and creativity that went into this truly amazing mod. It is packed with fun, puzzles, combat and adventure. I have not been a fan of “cartoonish” games, but after playing this I now have some second thoughts. 🙂

Secondly, in regards to the mod not working for Duke. Suggest he download and install the mod again after verifying his games and tools as you mentioned. Personally I am using linux with Steam and it plays perfectly. (I did take the effort of lower-casing all the file names before starting it.)

Thanks again for this and all your mods and may 2020 grant your every wish.

  9. …managed to sneak away for 10 minutes, no mate, it’s still the same..

  10. Personal Favourite

Well I thought this was really great!! A breath of fresh air. I would recommend that you play it and make up your own mind. Much of the game works fine. Obviously the voice work needs some improvement but Klem already mentioned that. It actually runs very smoothly for the most part and once you get the hang of the weapons and general movement, bunny hopping, ivy climbing etc. it really is a delight.

A couple of issues. The bell tune has already been mentioned but occasionally the bunny hopping didn’t quite work for me. In particular, in the factory trying to jump off the ramps onto the moving trellises did not always work and I had to noclip a couple of times to move on. Weapon aiming is not all it should be and I found that enemies could reach me from way off but often I could not reach them with the same weapon. A guidance system on the rocket launcher would have been good and there was no secondary fire action on any of the weapons.

With the final boss I found it very difficult to know what I was supposed to do. Countless rockets seemed to have no effect at all. [Spoiler Alert] I worked out that I had to get the hatch cover off somehow but it was really difficult with the flamethrower pushing you off all the time. [End spoiler alert] Somehow I managed to get through but was generally very disappointed with the eventual ending. Maybe that could be worked on for future releases.

All in all though a great experience and one that I would thoroughly recommend. Go on, play it, you’ll have fun!

  11. Love the map so far, but having difficulties with jumping, nearly to the point of quitting after so many (50?) failures. Maybe I’m not even supposed to jump? If I am, then what’s the point of making it over the top hard?

I’m talking about the broken railway, around screen shots 32-35, and what looks like I should make a long jump. Screen shot # 33, is it out of sequence, I can’t see that anywhere underwater. I’ve grabbed whatever was in the hanging basket.

    1. Oops! I think I was in the entirely wrong area…..

  12. Personal Favourite

This was such an enjoyable experience to play, I have to give it a PF. Its not just the recent lack of fun to play maps.

Sure its different but usually when that’s the case, its a portal map with just puzzles, or an atmosphere map with no combat. So much went into making this, everything is custom.

Complaints are minimal. Yes aiming is not good, you can find yourself in the wrong area with a jumping opportunity provided that can’t/isn’t supposed to be done, and the final boss battle can be a turn off after getting killed numerous times.

  13. Personal Favourite

An absolute classic. Wildly original and enjoyable. The boss scene is really tough and to be honest I eventually gave up and used notarget to get me through it, but otherwise this was really terrific. Thanks to Don for posting it here!

  14. Play It Now!

This mod is the perfect example of “never judge a book by its cover”.

  15. AI

Hi all! And happy new year!! Am currently playing “Wolfenstein: Youngblood” on Hard , very challenging (to say the least) But I recently installed this mod and have found it quite a refreshing change!! My kids liked the CareBears when they were Young!! Since I switched to Windows 10, I’ve had no issues running anything. I don’t go on Twitter or Facebook, but I’ve read some of Phillips comments about his age!! haha! I will be 74 (yes) in Feb, and I still build computers (gamming or other) and I like the term “OK Boomer” I’ve been a member since 2006 and believe it will still continue!!!

  16. The mod is a lot of fun and the cartoon graphics just add to the fun. I have reached the wizards castle add have hit a snag, the hall that has all the hams laying around that you are supposed to eat everything in that room has me stumped. How do you eat anything ? Have tried everything I know how to do and can not get past this. I know I am going to feel pretty dumb when I find out, but I would love to finish this mod. It has been a lot of fun so far. Help please !!!

    1. Maybe

I got stuck there for a while too; you have to burn yourself in the fire so the hams can heal you.

  17. positiv53

Absolutely brilliant a while since I enjoyed a game so much plus it was a bit of a challenge getting accuracy with all weapons. Very well put together mod.

  18. Play It Now!

Short but sweet, unless you’re stupid like me and aren’t able to figure out how to bunnyjump effectively like a pro quake gamer

it has a beginning, escalation and end – Pretty well polished, good soundtrack, good voice acting, custom and sharp textures and models – This is pretty much one of the best HL Source Mods I’ve ever played in my life.

even though the premise and concept may lead some people to believe it’s just some shitty parody of care bears (I thought that) It’s actually a pretty well rounded game, very out of the mold from many other mods I’ve played, lots of verticality, platforming, bunnyjumping and hair-ripping moments that combine to make a dope ass game

I give it 5 somalian child workers out of 5

Finally I try this one out, I believe at the first view that it could be something more for a funny run with beautifull texture and nothing else.
But what a smash… there is a strong storyline, design is great and make me think back to the approach of Hellsrag regarding conceptual grandness ( https://www.unrealsp.org/legacy/community/leveldesign/articles/conceptualgrandness.html )
Design of model including items and weapons are neat and perfectly fitting the theme so do voice acting (with some references that even make you laugh more than one time).
Gameplay is great too, between searching, a kind of arcade gaming like a scroll game and heavy combat which is totally out of a what is expected for a ‘toy story’ theme.

What impress me a lot, appart from the design, is the amount of good ideas tha increase the gameplay and finally the very coherant storyline 🙂

Is there something that I didn’t like…yess..the bunny jump that for several times cause me some frustration.

I certainly consider this one part of my favorite addons and for sure first in the category ‘specials’

  20. Play It Now!

This mod has a great level design and a good sense of humor, but what really makes it for me is the unique combat. Every weapon is strangely overpowered and underpowered. The shotgun’s spread is too large, the crossbow is mighty but reloads far too slow, the bazooka has a noticeable arc, etc. so the combat in the game is really rewarding to get good at. One of my favorite parts of the game is a section where enemies get piled on to you while you wait for a bridge to lower, and if you cant keep up with the waves or try to stay in place, you get overwhelmed quickly. The multiplayer is dead, of course, but I’m curious to see what it must be like to play deathmatch with this weapon selection. If you like the sound of a tough but rewarding shooter with mechanic-rich yet simple gameplay, I totally recommend it!

  21. Personal Favourite

Beautiful visual, custom story, fun weapons, well-designed puzzles, tight & fun combats! One of the best HL2 mods I’ve ever played.

  22. Play It Later

    Deceptively difficult!
I did not expected this feeling of old school shooter from the Carebears of all things.

  23. Personal Favourite

I went expecting cringe and just having a laugh with a bad mod (This before realizing this won a prize), but I never expected that I would love this mod so much as I did. The colorful world sets it apart from all the other drab and boring Half-Life 2 mods, with the puzzles keeping it very varied. The auto bunny hopping is probably my favorite mechanic ever (Because I never was good at bunny hopping lol). Yeah, the difficulty leans on the hard side, but that’s good for me, the challenge always felt fair and the combat arenas were a lot of fun and filled with tension.

I just love this mod, and that’s huge considering I was never too much into HL2 mods (Unlike HL1 mods). It hits the perfect balance between funny, challenging, and a blast to play. Highly recommended.

  24. Play It Later

I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to end and completed it in a single sitting, it has a very unique and fun style from its models, textures and sounds that works well throughout. The auto-bhop mechanic made combat and transversing the levels very fun and allowed for interesting stratergies / plays that would normally be incredibly difficult if not impossible. A relatively short playthrough but it likely worked out in it’s favour as to not have the theming become boring or overplayed. You should definitely play this at some point.

    Favourite feature(s)
    – Auto bhop
    – Unique style

    Lest favourite feature(s)
    – The grunting noise that plays when you jump
