Cosmonaut

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

6th October 2019

You play as a cosmonaut who has had to abandon their space station, but upon arriving back on earth, discover that the place has been overrun by the combine. What happens next? Do you give in to the Combine army, or do you resist and use your skills to find some way of escaping?

Cosmonaut is Dolmo’s greatly expanded and polished version of his entry of the same name for last year’s NostalgiaVille mapping challenge.

This was July 2021’s Classic of the Month mod.

  1. Play It Now!

Cosmonaut is one of my favourite Half-Life 2 mods I’ve played so far.

First of all, I love a gameplay of the mod. It doesn’t bore you when you’re playing, you don’t want the mod to end. The gameplay isn’t repetitive, but very variative.

Secondly, I can’t say that the mod is visually impressive, but it is really solid and high-quality. Detalization and brushwork were pretty good. The level design was really well-done.

Thirdly, I love that the mod features lots of secrets and achievements, they make Cosmonaut replayable. Game Of Gnomes and stuff like that makes the mod really fun to play it again and again.

In conclusion I’ve got to say that Dolmo did a pretty good job. I highly recommend everyone to play it.

Well done. My only issue is that I’ve run into a slight glitch fairly early on in the room where you have to repair the pipe and turn on the water so that the level rises high enough to get into a tunnel. The water rises, but I’m unable to move into the tunnel. I’ve watched the walk-through, and tried maneuvering exactly the same way, but I just sort of “bobble” in the water and never move into the tunnel.

Otherwise, I can tell that this mod is really well done.

  2. Personal Favourite

Cosmonaut was one of my favorite entries for any HL mapping competition ever. Seeing it being expanded into a full mod made me very excited. Played through it, and was definitely not disappointed.

Dolmo has done some fantastic work here, and created a possible future classic. There is just so much to like about this mod, I don’t know where to begin.
Gameplay is classic HL2 in a good way, you have your intense combat sections broken up by some puzzles that you meet just before getting combat fatigue, like Valve did perfectly in HL2.
The visuals overall are great, every area is very well detailed and there is some great displacement work as well. I never felt an area needed a decal or a prop more.

One of my favorite things about this mod is how it keeps switching gears; you go through many different areas in the span of a few maps, but it’s not jarring at all and flows together well.

The progression was also well done, I liked how you introduced HL2’s mechanics again for people who have never played it before, but it doesn’t feel boring to people already familiar with it.
The weapon progression, same thing; just when I was getting tired of my current arsenal and wanted a new gun, there it was.

I could go on forever about how much I liked this mod, but I don’t think people would like to read all of that. If it wasn’t clear already, I fully recommend this mod to anyone.
This is one of those mods that I’d accept as an official expansion pack.

This is an excellent mod and I hope the author makes many more. IMO, the atmosphere and settings are great. I almost wish there were more enemies so that I would be forced to linger a little longer in each area looking for ammo, health, or secrets.

The one thing I wish was there was an ending screen that stated my accomplishments or secrets found. I know I didn’t find everything, but I’d like to know how much I missed. I need to know how thorough I need on the next play-through.

    Thumbs up.

Did you follow the installation instructions? Specifically, make sure the Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer is set to ‘upcoming’ in the Betas tab in Steam.

  5. Walrosh

I really really liked this mod. Especially with the MMod compatability patch.

  6. Well-written and I didn’t discover any flaws. One of the better mods on this site.

  7. Play It Now!

This mod was well constructed and fun to play. I did recognize some of the area from previous competitions but the author changed them enough that it wasn’t repetitive at all. Well worth downloading and playing

  8. Play It Now!

Not only is this mod long, but it’s also high quality from A to Z. It is clear that a lot of work has been put into this project, and it definitely shows.

Now, it’s been a while since I’ve played this mod so my memory might be a bit foggy. Cosmonaut doesn’t do anything revolutionary gameplay-wise, but that’s not a problem for me personally. I never got lost, there was no kitchen sink combat, and there was an abundance of health/batteries throughout the entire mod. Secrets were scattered throughout the entire mappack, adding a bit of extra spice to Cosmonaut.

Visually it was also very good. The player encounters a number of different environments, but the transitions weren’t jarring like in some other mods.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that the custom soundtracks are a nice addition to Cosmonaut; they were timed well and didn’t felt out of place.

  9. Personal Favourite

    WOW !! WOW!! WOW!!
Just finished playing for the first time. Plan to go back soon to play it again.
Overall, the game is excellent with its movement, graphics, and story. I had a couple of spots where I was slowed down to have to figure out what to do next to continue, but most of the game was smooth and exciting. I’d recommend that you haven’t yet, download it and get started. This game has become one of my favorites.
Job well done in its design and work spent to make it so good. Thank you. Looking forward to any other games you’ve designed.

  10. Personal Favourite

WOW! Exactly the same reaction as geezer, I was blown away by everything. Graphics, combat, puzzles woven into the game in such a way as to make you think, but not give up.

Its a special mod that’s for sure. Possibly my favorite of all time. Thank you so much!

  11. Play It Now!

Had lots of fun with this one.

Had enough of little puzzles, nothing too difficult or weird, but had to think twice every now and then. Wasnt just run and gun speedrun.

Neil Manke style mapping, Often you stayed in rather small area and when you made some progress, you could often see areas that you visited before thru some fence/window etc.

Something that i was missing… friendly npc’s. Well at least alive ones.

  12. Play It Now!

Great work, i really like original HL2 amtosphere and this mapping.

  13. Play It Now!

There really aren’t any criticisms I can level at this mod on a technical basis – every aspect of the game and level design was done very well, from lighting to textures to balance of AI.

Any criticisms I could give would be purely on personal preference – I didn’t like some of the music, for example, but that’s overshadows by the fact there was custom music (voiceovers too, and not the usual badly processed ones you often see).

This is the highest quality mod I’ve seen yet in terms of professionalism and polish, and it’s worth a place in anyone’s collection.

  14. Play It Now!

This mod does feel like a somewhat more “condensed” version of the Half Life 2 and episode events – There’s a start in the city with lots of chases, there’s a midpoint in a hospital, a mine and then antlion hive section, followed by a white-forest type rocket-launch type of installation in a rural area – There’s always a sense of progression and new scenery to gawk at, plus the choice of collecting golden gnomes (If you’re into treasure hunting), and a couple of easter eggs to look at and go “Oh I know what that’s a reference to”.

Overall, a fun, good looking and polished experience – The only issue I would have with this mod, is that the final boss battle is a tad tedious.

  15. I remember this from NostalgiaVille and I remember loving it. However, when the force-field goes up those guards come out and stand around for a bit. Then I’m let loose and one of them follows me… I cannot seem to do anything though – and one soldier keeps following! Bit confused but I’m guessing it’s because I’m on Mac? (and yes, I followed the installation instructions).
Shame, I remember loving this so I’m disappointed I cannot play the upgraded version 🙁

    1. That doesn’t sound like a Mac issue? I think it’s just my bad design and stupid reliance on the NPC AI.
Part of me wants to go back and clean that first section up because its some of the worst design I have implemented into a mod.
My suggestion would be to try play the thing from the start and If the bug occurs again, I can change it to not be such a clunky section.

      1. Roy

I was also stuck after the first force field as well. After leaving the escape capsule I moved around to the right to sneak up before doing anything.

If I just move straight forward, I was able to continue after the first force field.

Maybe a trigger? When I get the time I will load it up again and use Showtriggers_toggle to see. I don’t have any experience mapping on Half-Life 2 do know for sure.

I really did enjoy this mod.

        1. Thanks for the info Roy! I will try and make a better system that doesn’t break a lot and hopefully upload it soonish (hopefully 🙂 )

  16. This mod isn’t like regular,this mod can provide so many thinkiness,even you don’t even know,i love this mod,he isn’t easy,especially with puzzles,but i loved it,i loved most combat,it was made perfect!!!

  17. Personal Favourite

I really like this mod from start to end

I like the linear progression, lot’s of puzzles (most of the time not really complicated), the visit of various ‘HL world’, the collect those yellow gnomes and presence of stuffs if you really look arround and the intro and outro

For me this was all what I needed without frustration to really enjoy the gaming moment

  18. Play It Now!

What is to say besides WOW, EPIC, and just PLAY IT NOW.

  19. Personal Favourite

A very well-written and well thought out mod. Really enjoyed it…twice!
    Thanks very much, Dolmo!

  20. Personal Favourite

Wonderful mod! Nice puzzles, nice combats, nice ending, etc.

  21. Play It Now!

Really nice mod that has vanilla feel to it, the premise is pretty interesting combat is fun and map design is damn good. All in all its a solid mod totally check it out.

  22. Play It Later

It looks good but It was kinda boring. The chapters go by and you keep expecting the next will be better. It wasn’t.

I have allways problems with gameinfo.txt ! Wrong Number at Cosmonaut :

What is the right Number ??

    Thank You !

Did you carefully follow the Manual Installation Instructions?

Specifically, you need the Upcoming branch of the Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer installed, and run it once (just get to the main menu then quit).

  24. Personal Favourite

This is hands down my favorite mod of all time. It’s executed perfectly. Without giving too much away, the way the maps are laid out for the player are almost like it was done by a Valve employee. I try to learn how Cosmonaut managed to pull this off. The beginning isn’t slow, it’s well timed and although there are some details that could be added, I can’t say too many negatives about it.

    Score Sheet

Usage of space and world brushes: 8/10
Could use some more polishing, but an excellent standard to my own mod with. Solid brush work with lots of cover.

    Visuals: 8/10
There is a lot to look at, but certainly not eye-candy levels of visuals. However, there is still a lot of details present. Some I may have missed.

    Gameplay9/10
Fantastic gameplay and excellent storyline with a solid mix of combat, items, and exploration.

    Final Score: 25/30 – 83%.

Final Comments: It could use some final polishing to add a bit more kick to the visuals, but a damn good mod. Will review it more in depth on my YT channel one day.

Note: My playtime might be a bit off, it’s a long mod, but I am a slow player.
