1. Phillip says Play It!

I enjoyed this for what it is – a short map with not exactly a story, but definitely a setting.

The start is interesting because you can see more or less where you need to go, but have to figure out how to get there.

I found it quite challenging, although not exactly hard. A little less ammo and health might have made it more fun.

Once you get out onto the balcony, things liven up. The author has done a pretty good job of making it look plausible.

Some newer mappers could learn from maps like this because the mapping is not sate of the art, but it’s clear the mapperr knew exactly what he wanted to create and kept it simple and effective. Much better than the long, rambling mods we see today.

It’s fun for 10 minutes, with a touch of nostalgia, but don’t expect too much.

  2. Great little map, it appeared on the TWHL site.

  3. Play It Now!

We start in the interesting place on the cliff. Inside the mountain, there is a penthouse which we need to infiltrate.

The exploration is interesting and rewarded by additional supplies and the unexpectedness, which appears at the right time.

The design is beautiful and original. There are new prefabs. The gameplay pleases us with unusual fights and scripted events.

There is some room for improvement: it would be nice to add a train ride and change the geometry to remove the need for clip brushes, but this map was made for a contest, where the main thing is to get it done in time.

Overall, interesting and original map. Worth playing.

This was one of the maps submitted for TWHL’s 14th competion, for which I established the theme and basic rules.
What looks like a penthouse is actually supposed to be Dr Breen’s house while serving as administrator in Black Mesa! 🙂

    1. I used “penthouse” because that’s all I could think of as I was typing.

Not a great deal to this mod, once you figure out how to climb the rock face there is a brief but challenging firer-fight followed by a weak and disappointing ending. The mod for me needed to kick-on from where it finished, it was just too short leaving the player expecting more action, maybe a part 2 contender.

The penthouse, or whatever it is, as well as the rock climb make me give this a PiN.

I guess the first place to start is the rock climb, very unique for a HL mod and I have never seen anything like it (except those darn KZ maps) which was nice. The penthouse was well made and actually looked like a house, which is quite rare and I enjoyed it. The vent crawl was pretty enjoyable too, for some reason. Gameplay was challenging but well done but not enough of it. Shouldn’t take more than 5 mins and it is short.

    Worth playing although short.

Worth playing but it took me a while to figure out how to ascend the rock face. I don’t really like “invisible” items.

Wow, for its size and intent, this is one cute, fun and nicely mapped … map! It went by in a flash, but I thought to myself, this looks quite good. If it was ever inserted into something longer, it’d have made a nice addition.

I want a penthouse overlooking the new mexico desert. 🙂

A nice little fun map of coffee break length!

The climb at the beginning was a little irritating, as I kept falling of trying to get to the ledge but I eventually made it. For the fact there was a Bullsquid in the cave, this must be after the BM incident?

Overall it looked good for what it was and the short combat section was well done and the house felt about right. At the end I was hoping the train would take me to a new area, but alas that was the end!

Make it 6 PN with mine so far, this is a fine little piece of calclated jumps and combat, and is a good mod because is simple!!, no big deal layouts but pretty good scenario, I mean, is like combat in a strange mountain suite, the only thing i’d change is make easier the path in the rocks in order to get to the
cave with the bullsquid in it, I mean the path to get there is not clear at all and the jumps make it even harder, also to get to the mini cave where are 2 head crabies and a dead scientist with HEV Suit in there u can have explosive launch graneades and more ammo for the SMG
, is hectic too. but appart from that this is a really neat and precise little mod.

    Maybe?

Nice little map set on the Black Mesa cliffs, which I always like since that section of Surface Tension is one of my favorite places in the original game. It shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to play, although there are quite a few grunts to fight your way through. But I felt this was too easy combat-wise – by the time I came up against the large squad, I had a decent number of hand and contact grenades that made the encounter trivial.

It’s nicely put together, although I would have loved the tram to start at the end, I’m a sucker for a train ride. Try to keep in mind it was a relatively quickly made map, for a TWHL competition. There’s still fun to be had but overall there’s not a lot of substance.

This may be worth playing if you like jumping and the cliff setting, or if you’re a mapper and want to see a good, different take on the cliffs.

  12. Play It Now!

This is an amazing mod that should be known.

The story of this mod is that our protagonist finds himself in the edge of a cliff, and saw a penthouse. So, our goal is to find a tram so we can escape. The story isn’t anything, but it doesn’t have to be.

The combat is surprisingly challenging. There is an area where there are 8 to 10 soldiers (maybe more) fighting you.

I forgot to mention that you begin on the (previously mentioned) cliff-side, which was pretty original for HL1 mods.

Overall, this is one that you should really play.

  13. For me, it crashes as soon as I get in the tram.

  14. Play It Now!

Climbing the cliff is a little bit tough. (I sometimes slip, and I didn’t know that the part of the cliff can be climbed like a ladder.) The combats in the building are very fun since I have some grenades. I like the surprise event which occurs in the scientist’s room. Nice map!

  15. Play It Later

I really loved the openness and ambiguity of the first area. The shootout is rad but I would’ve liked for there to be more mobility than just cowering behind a door. Really fun 30-minute experience.

  16. Short map, a very decent level design, as for the combat, it’s pretty much non-existent. I wouldn’t call it easy because first, sure I killed two shotgunners first. But the moment I get out and take cover, the grunts keep throwing grenades and end up killing themselves. In other words, I didn’t do anything the entire time. I just waited for all of them to kill themselves before progressing the game.

  17. Play It Later

Looks like I forgot to rate the map. Here you go.
