  1. Phillip says Play It!

I kinda wish I hadn’t know it was an MP remake. I knew that the map would probably feature a layout that you could just run around and it had, but that didn’t detract from the fun, so I don’t really know what I was worried about.

A few years ago, I started a project called DM2SP where I tried to convince mappers to convert their HL2 Dm maps into SP versions. I started a website and contacted a few modders and forums.

I got at least two converted and they weren’t bad and this The Gloom reminds us that it is possible.

    Onto the proper review.

There are plenty of enemies, in well-considered locations, enough to do: find the keys, and caches etc, please it’s nice to have a change of textures.

Make sure you play the piano and look in every nook and cranny.

All in all, it was an enjoyable 25 minutes (I got lost a lot) that I recommend you spend playing this map.

  2. Play It Now!

For an SP remake of a CS map, it’s not that bad!

Combat is good… for the most part. There are no grunts to fight, which could be disappointing for some, but it didn’t bug me that much. Enemies are actually well placed, but the problem is that it gets repetitive through the end.

Atmosphere was the best thing about this map. Yeah, it’s classic de_storm, but the modder added a few extras. The map had a dark feeling, not to mention the lightning effect which I find to be great If it was used in more mods, I would be really happy. Though, sometimes it gets too dark in some indoor areas

The mod had a very Quake-style, with keys to open doors and being totally speedrunable.

Now, there is one thing that quite bugged me. There are a lot of houses you must enter, which is nice, but hearing that damn wood walking effect gets me on my nerves.

Overall, this is a great map with a great concept. I’d really like to see more!

  3. Play It Now!

A PIN overall score as it had lots of action and places to go. I found the atmosphere both good and bad, the latter because of it being too dark (duh, its called “gloom” lol) and a bit too repetitive in terms of colours, boxes etc.

However its definitely one you will want to play.

    Play It Now!

I liked this one. I have to confess that I’m an absolute fan of multi player maps which go single player. I guess that’s why, mods like “Hardwire CSS SCI FI” are one of my Personal Favorites of all time. I guess I just like MP maps as SP, because their layout or logic is not linear at all. So in a SP environment, they offer you very cool combat in realistic scenarios with not necessarily a linear progression.

Here I had those feelings all the way, I mean, it was very fun and entertaining to have those battles against the xenians, and the whole dynamic of the map was also like an old school HL1 map, you know, search for keys and pull levers in order to open doors to have access to new areas.

Also I think this mod make me feel nostalgic, I’d love to play another project like RE-ISSUES, that would be fantastic, mappers modding cool HL1 maps or converting MP maps into SP would be a great project!! I hope PP.com would consider it sometime, but for some strange reason not many modders are willing to build HL1 maps, I really don’t know why, maybe the engine is hectic and not of their liking…

The only glitch I can tell about this mod is that experienced quite trembling-stuttering gameplay every time I moved, maybe because something related to my video options??, anyway, and when I tried to fix that by modifying video options, I got stranded and totally unable to move or shoot my gun, and even with a save reload or opening a new game I couldn’t solve that, I just stayed there totally numb, so I had to re-install the mod. Though I think that glitch is probably due to some Steam updates, because the same happened to me when I recently played the Absolute Redemption HL1 mod.

So in conclusion this is a great mod for have some fun combat against xenians and if you love MP maps going SP you definitely have to try this.

  5. Play It Now!

lets be clear … i never play half life maps or mods … its allways half life 2 and portal mods that i generally play, however “the gloom” was a extremely enjoyable map and i found it a good half hour of gaming
this may be the time i try more half life mods however since this is the first for a long time is there any i should try ? …..
all in all a excellent map and great fun !

    Maybe?

I enjoyed this map despite my recommendation. I think it definitely has solid design and layout, and overall it’s a fun experience. My ‘Maybe’ rating comes straight from Phillip’s guidelines: I felt it was a map that some players may enjoy and they need to check the reviews and screens first.

The map itself is nicely laid out and designed. I thought I had played de_storm but I suppose it was added to Counter-Strike after my CS heyday (ended up I was thinking of de_thunder when I was reading the description above). I also liked the adaptation from multiplayer to singleplayer (I have been working with a couple of these conversions and they are not always elegant).

The combat is nicely designed and some of the alien spawns will keep you on your toes. One of my main issues with The Gloom is that it’s just too damn easy. Your most challenging foes are alien grunts, but by then you’re likely packed with crossbow ammo and there’s health all over the place. I think better balancing is in order here; if you’re going to play this map I recommend cranking up the difficulty a notch from your regular one.

The other critique I have is related to the map itself. It really lacks distinctive areas, other than ‘inside’ and ‘outside’. Too much of the map is dull brown and it kind of all looks the same. Add that to the CS-style layout and you can get easily lost for a bit, especially when you have to backtrack after opening a door. It’s hard to fault the author here when it’s based on an existing map, but the end result is still a bit of a monotonous experience when the map looks so similar throughout.

  7. Play It Now!

This map is suprised me, becouse I don’t think it might be good before I played this. Design is of course nice, becouse its from Counter Strike 1.6. I like the atmosphere of Counter Strike 1.6 map with Xen Aliens. In this, it works perfectly!

    I enjoy quite a lot.

  8. Play It Now!

Short, but sweet! Very nice graphics and great atmosphere – I really enjoyed this, especially as it diversifies the usual Black Mesa/Xen stuff 🙂

  9. Play It Now!

I love the medieval concept of the map. The combats are well designed. Nice map!

  10. Personal Favourite

I’m the first to give it a personal favorite… 🙂

I Really like the atmosphere, the design (simple and efficient) and the way you’re drive through the whole map, sound are well used too

I think I simply didn’t expect that I would like it so much thats why in my case it turns to a personal favorite

  11. Play It Later

Nice little map based on a CS map. The atmosphere made the map a completely different experience.

  12. Play It Now!

Far one of the best mods I’ve played. Even if it’s a short one, it’s still fun at least. It’s that the combat is too easy for me, I get to fight alien grunts, sure that is challenging but once I have obtained a crossbow, it defeats the challenge.

  13. Play It Later

A little simple and very short but good overall.
