  1. Phillip says Play It!

This mod comes with two maps, but they are exactly the same. The difference is the weapons you get.

In the first, it’s mostly action, but you can use stealth. In the second it’s ALL stealth.

I’m certainly not a big fan of stealth, but the inclusion here was enough to have fun, without making it too laborious. I can’t say whether its implementation was well done, but the reward for actually doing seemed pretty cool to me.

The basic map is nicely laid out with a couple of routes in a couple of places.

I definitely enjoyed the ACTION version more and the ending is slightly longer too.

Perhaps, Stealth is an acquired taste, that I need more of. StealthVille anyone?

    1. Naughty Phillip! No StealthVille! :p

      1. Well, we could compromise and do something like ShadowVille.

  2. BadPeaceDK

Stealthville sounds like an excellent idea, to utilize the Source AI in new ways.

I also enjoyed the map, but found the stealth part slightly clunky.

    1. Stealth using Half Life 2 AI tends to be a bit clunky because the AI wasn’t really designed to incorporate stealth. I think Assassinateville had some attempts at stealth.

      1. Yeah, I have to agree with this one. Stealth is extremely hard to pull off with Half-Life, as the AI included with the game isn’t really programmed for stealth gameplay. Yes it can be done, but it requires many AI logic changes to really do full-on stealth (and yes, I have attempted to do this at one point only to have it fail miserably.

      2. JG

Yeah, there was that one map. 😉

But anyhow, stealth is one of those things that’s far easier said than done. Half-Life 2 really doesn’t have the systems for it.

    2. I’d say the stealth in this mod was the best I’ve ever seen in HL2. It’d be cool if someone made a larger mod with a system like this.

    3. stealth is very hard to pull of and requires a lot of scripting (logic gates n stuff) the normal 10 days wouldnt be enough time to set up the triggering (mostly since most people dont realy have much experience in making working stealth like gameplay).

      thoe the idea sounds great

  3. Unsettlinglife

The installer is broken. Missing DLL launcher.

    1. I believe the archive is fine (it’s not an installer) because I had the same issue and had to update my Ep2 installation. The reason I don’t believe it’s the Duality archive is because I tested other mods and they were the same. Nothing worked until I updated Ep2.

      1. JG

As Zekiran alludes to below, there’s been a flurry of activity on the Steam forums about how the latest update to HL2 broke the game and prevents it from launching. It’s not the mod itself.

    2. I was able to successfully install and play with MapTap, if it helps.

  4. Zekiran

Nope, the DLL can’t be found, it’s an issue that seems to be pervasive because of the last Valve update. Verifying episode 2’s files did nothing.

    1. I had the same problem – delete the EP2 bin folder and then verify – steam should reload the required files. Hope this helps.

      1. Can you please provide more details on where/how, thanks.

Edit, I renamed the bin file under EP2, went into Steam, right clicked on both duality and EP2, chose Properties, Local files, Verify Integrity of Game Cache (error first ry, OK second try)…whew user friendly or what – NOT… and still nothing works, not Duality, not HL2 Ep2. Can’t play anything. does anyone know what’s going on and how to fix it.

        1. weedslayers

I did the “verify integrity of game cache” thing for Half Life 2 (one file failed) Episode 1-clean and Episode 2 (one file failed) in that order. I did not delete the bin file. Restarted Steam and everything worked.

          1. Thanks so much. It took that sequence to make mine work with anything. Duality starts up, and so does HL2 Ep2.

      2. Zekiran

I have no fewer than three locations in one section of my Steam folders, which have “half life 2 episode 2” bins. I’m reasonably tempted to just reinstall everything, but given that there have been such problems with the updated games not working, I’m not sure that’ll help. I have done the removal of the bin folder in two spots, and verified, and not had any success.

The support article for this seems to indicate that this is some kind of “if your computer can’t support ss2 something or other” issue but having *played the games on this exact computer* not long ago, I find it impossible to believe that all of a sudden my rig is at fault. I’ve played all the newest PP mods without issue up until yesterday. I haven’t tried others yet, may as well do some troubleshooting.

  5. Play It Later

This map is an interesting experiment in Half Life 2 stealth. It does a pretty good job of replicating sneaking systems though naturally the same problems arise. Enemy movement and view cones can be somewhat unpredictable though it seems clear that the enemy agro distance has been reduced. Additionally there isn’t really enough feedback to the player as to where the enemies are it is really quite easy to go around a corner and find yourself detected by an enemy.

You can fight your way through which is probably the easiest option though playing on hard some sections I just couldn’t beat, I think there is a slight lack of sufficient cover and / or health if you’re playing on hard.

Other than that once you actually figure out how the stealth system works it’s actually quite fun. It’s worth noting that crouching doesn’t actually seem to make you any quieter so you can run around to the back of your target, crouch and then stab them in the back. And actually I think I prefer speedy stealth.

I did try the second mode but the UI was distracting and actually quite confusing so I didn’t feel compelled to play the same map twice.

  6. Maybe?

I’m stuck between casting a Play It Later vote for the action chapter, and casting a Think Twice vote for the stealth chapter, so I will split my vote in half and say Maybe.

The action chapter is short and simple: Start at point A, make your way to point B, amassing progressively more powerful weapons to take out progressively more powerful enemies. No boxes to stack to reach a hard-to-reach area, no grenade that must be thrown at just the right angle and trajectory (isn’t the grenade crate always a dead giveaway of that?), no gravity gun puzzles to solve. If that is the kind of mod you like, this mod delivers.

As others have already mentioned, stealth and HL2 simply do not go well together. One reason is because hostile NPC’s are never “partially aware” of you: they are either blissfully ignorant of your existence, or will stop at nothing to destroy you. This is not to say that the Source engine cannot do this (perfect example: the Witch in L4D2), but HL2 really doesn’t have any stealth elements coded into it. Case in point: while “cloaked”, I was able to shine my flashlight into the eyes of a patrolling Combine, and he took no notice whatsoever.

While I give kudos to the author at for attempting a clever approach to the HL2 gaming experience (Research and Development, anyone?), ultimately it falls short and simply doesn’t work. My advice would be to play the action chapter if you need your HL2 fix and skip the stealth chapter.

    1. JG

“One reason is because hostile NPC’s are never ‘partially aware’ of you”

      Bingo. 🙂

Plus, let’s face it, half the appeal of stealth games is messing around with the AI and seeing how they react.

  7. Hec
    Play It Now!

I liked the concept of this mod. Also to be able to play both sorts of strategic combat was a nice plus in this mod. But I have to say, that being a fan of hardcore combat, I definitely liked the action map rather than the stealthy one.

Is really interesting how the whole gaming experience change once you change the gameplay dynamic or structure. And I have to say the stealth dynamic is quite good and that stealth kill was delightful, but I think the most difficult part on the stealth mode is where you face the stationary guard. There, I tried more than twice to get it stealthy right but I fail and I always have to openly combat the 2 CMB soldiers with my baton, which is a cool weapon we barely play with replacing the crowbar in HL2 mods.

The outside area is really fun in both modes, tough the stealth ending is a killjoy one to me, and the action finale is better.

So in conclusion this was an interesting mod I liked, as it got me entertained, I also think I’d like to play a stealthville competition, BUT if it is not only restricted to stealth dynamic, I mean, id’ love also to be able to have some combat and some stealth parts.

  8. StealthVille, what a great idea, Phillip! FYI, I’ve played all the Splinter Cell games, that’s how I like stealth games:)

    1. As people have said, Stealth is very well implemented in Source, so I won’t be having that competition.

  9. Personal Favourite

does anyone remember “metal gear solid” .. the game that introduced stealth to gaming ( some may disagree on that ) .. however being a ex army chappy tactics come into gaming and i do use some of the military tactics i learned when i do game
DUALITY is a excellent map were tactics are used and with the right path you can avoid all npc,s and complete the map without any shots being fired ..
i shall be playing this game many more times and hopefully i shall acheive that goal (no shot completion ) and because of its stealth nature thats why ive awarded it a “personal favourite ”
the only negative side is the length of the mod …… however i will look forward to more of steves maps and mods … nice one matey !

  10. Play It Later

Like I already stated in another comment, stealth is extremely hard to actually do with HL2, and just having a map that revolves completely around stealth mechanics is actually really cool to see pulled off in the game.

The first time playing through the map is the action run, mainly letting you know where the enemy placement is, and shows the entirety of the map before you have to complete it using only stealth. The stealth bits being mentioned in the action run is helpful, and allows you to practice the skill. At the same time if anything does go wrong here, you have weapons to solve the problem.

The stealth play-through only gives you a baton, requiring you to sneak out of the same area you just played through, which is much easier said than done. While I did find the interface for knowing when the player was concealed, which I assume means that they were in darkness, it just seemed to get in the way more than it helped. I’m also guessing that the functionality here took a long time, especially since the brushes designating the light are probably all over the place.

Overall, I think this a very well-done demonstration of what the base AI in Half-Life 2 is able to do with regards to stealth mechanics, without having the AI being modified by modder-written code.

Also, hope you don’t mind, but I might want to dissect the map to learn how you accomplished this…

  11. Can’t play this one. I get a DLL Launcher Error message. I verified the cache but still nothing.

    1. Try launching Episode Two and follow any instructions.

      1. Zekiran

That’s the issue, Phillip, launching episode 2 doesn’t work either. Half life 2, episode 1 and episode 2 are broken with the current update for some of us for no apparent reason.

Thing is: I was just able to get on Garry’s Mod and run around just fine – though I didn’t try launching any of the main maps with it from the games themselves, only modded maps.

Verifying didn’t work, three times. Removing the bin folder, didn’t work. Verifying the SDK didn’t work. There’s been zero help on the forum (and I won’t touch the discussion hubs), so it might just have to wait until Valve realizes they’ve broken our games and launches a fix or reverts whatever stupid changes they just made.

        1. Zekiran

Put in a support ticket and attempted a fix (basically, “reinstall steam! verify again!”) and that led only to a new error:

In order to play games with shared content, you must verify the files of this game: SteamVR.

…. I don’t HAVE steam vr on my rig because surprise surprise, I don’t own and will never use an Oculous. This is beyond frustrating.

          1. I got the same message about SteamVR but ignored it and the game worked.

        2. Ep2 (maybe the others) didn’t work for me either. I just followed the instructions and it seems I was lucky enough for it to work.

          1. Zekiran

I *had* to install (or at least, let it download, what the hell?) SteamVR in order for any validation to work.

It DOES work, I’m just crossing my fingers that’s all that was wrong. The error messages in this sequence were of absolutely no use, particularly the last one since SteamVR was not a game and shouldn’t be listed as such. It’s a tool, in the tool section, which one might not consider using if one doesn’t, say, HAVE a vr device.

            1. I *had* to install (or at least, let it download, what the hell?) SteamVR in order for any validation to work.

It’s so strange that we have such different experiences of the same problem.

              1. Zekiran

Which to me screams “steam, stop messing with our installs!” 🙂 Because obviously: both of us could play before these updates, both had issues, and both were NOT solved by the same fix. It just seems very sloppy.

Also, I promise I’ll finish playing this mod and get a review up soon 😀

  12. Very enjoyable, both of them. Hec said about the same as I would.

  13. Play It Now!

I enjoyed the action option. It’s a good quality but short little mod. I skipped the stealth option though as I don’t really like those kind of games.

I had the same DLL issues as everybody above. Eventually after some struggle I got it working. I ended up completely uninstalling Steam and wiping everything off my computer. I did this to fix the issue and also to see if the bug I encountered in STTR would go away (unfortunately it did not).

  14. Maybe?

    Meh… it was alright.

The mapping was pretty decent, and it does feel like a Nova Prospekt-style prison, though, I think it suits more with the action setting, as I didn’t find the stealth mechanic enjoyable.

Combat, was… okay. Well, it mostly depends on which setting you prefer. I prefered the action setting more, and even then, it’s mostly mediocre. Sometimes enemies just come out of nowhere, which sucks a lot, really.

Now, about the stealth element… I didn’t like it at all. I’m sorry, I know the author tried, but I just didn’t like it. There was this crazy “Cloak element” which I still don’t know what it does. It’s madness really.

Overall, the new mechanics are nice but just not enough to save this mod.

P.S. The HUD was broken for me, dunno why.

  15. Ade
    Maybe?

I was never too keen on replayability by forced re-play by using same area of a map for that. If I enjoy a section and I can take the time/want to go over it again, try different tactics etc to get more health/ammo ratio in the end, then mod succeeded. The only somewhat good example of replayability of an area, from what I can recall, would be The Citizen Returns, where you basically choose your style but can try the others if curiosity tickles you.
In this mod I, too, enjoyed the action mode more since I’m a run&gun player, plus it was a longer version and less boring; in the stealth mode you only have the stunstick and if you crouch close enough, you can bug them out to hit the air instead of you, so not much fun. And I felt both versions didn’t explain or implement the stealth/sneaking up on enemies since they magically spot you at random times.
Not many issues with it, felt tested enough, only 1 gripe: I had to manually unlock the 2nd chapter. But it could’ve done with more detailing mapping wise imo. And isn’t stealth about crossing an area without being noticed and without killing any enemies, oh and sounding 0 alarms in the process? I felt I had no chance here to do that, wondering if any1 finished this without sounding the alarm in either of the ‘scenarios’.

Unfortunately youtube decided I can’t upload long videos anymore without me giving my phone, so until that’s fixed, here’s the twitch version of our playthrough: http://www.twitch.tv/adelina1985a/c/5332501

  16. Play It Later

This is actually quite a fun experiment, which presents the player with a single challenge, but with two different play styles: choosing either to run-and-gun in typical Half-life style or to start with only a stun baton and be presented with no other weapons throughout play.

In this mod, you start with two options for which map to run. On choosing, you are placed in a prison from which you have to escape. Visually, they are exactly the same, including enemy logic, paths to take, and the prison aesthetic overall, but functionally they are somewhat different. The ‘stealthier’ option with only the baton gives you areas where you’re totally invisible to guards, while the run and gun does not offer these. Ultimately, this is the only major difference, though there is a final battle and ending that is altered in both versions.

Saying that one option is strictly run-and-gun and the other is strictly stealth-based isn’t true. You can use a majority of the stealth mechanics in the run and gun version of the map, but it’s a lot harder because you don’t have cloak spots to hide.

The adjustments to combine AI are super impressive to make stealth work, though I feel like they are a lot dumber as a result. In earlier sections, One enemy noticing you does not notify other guards and they definitely never notice dead comrades. At the same time, I feel the map given is unfair in that it doesn’t feel like it’s possible to get through the whole thing without getting caught at least once. This could also be untrue and maybe I’m just bad at the mechanics, but in that case, it’s definitely hard to get right, even with a simple layout.

I feel like I would really enjoy this type of thing if it were expanded; I wouldn’t like it as a linear mod, but as a series of challenges it’d be great.

It’s a really good effort and a major change in normal HL2 enemy mechanics. Nice job!

  17. Play It Now!

Short but really interesting concept. It’s quite unfortunate that the length of the map is less than 10 min, although I recommend anyone to give it a try especially in you like stealth games.

The Gauge installation opposed no DLL problem by the way

  18. Play It Later

I’ve gotta say that I’m pretty impressed with the stealth aspect. I thought it worked rather well and they didn’t seem to feel any presence as I crept up on them. Pretty cool. This is a map to play slowly and carefully. Save often. Really interesting level design – I enjoyed the indoor areas as much as creeping about outside.

The end battles took place inside a dark arena which wasn’t too great, but that’s just my personal pref. Yep, overall I enjoyed this map. Nice stealth mechanics which I personally thought worked well considering it’s HL2…

  19. Play It Now!

I prefer a straight fight to all this sneaking around.
