  1. Phillip says Maybe

All in all, I quite enjoyed this release but as I mention in my blind playthrough, the colour palette is very dull and the whole feel of the mod lacks excitement.

No particular area stood out as being special and there was a contrast between some nicely detailed areas and other empty, plain ones.

I found the enemies often can straight at me and rarely did I feel under pressure.

Getting the rocket launcher gave me the impression of an impending boss fight but I didn’t even use it.

I managed to get out of the map in one place and suspect I could have in other places too.

Overall, I feel that EMil didn’t get this tested enough, if at all, and was more focused on tre visual and layout elements of the mod and didn’t pay enough attention to the basic combat interactions.

I say MAYBE as my recommendation. It’s certainly not bad, but it could have been much better.

  2. Play It Later

I was pretty excited when I saw the description of Aurora: Reinstated. I thought it was another chance to tell a compelling story that reintroduces Adrian Shepherd as a protagonist. Many mods have tried, but so far I haven’t found any that succeeded.

When I started the game, I was completely underwhelmed. There is absolutely nothing that indicates the player is intended to be Adrian Shepherd. Since I was still wearing an HEV suit without an explanation, I might as well assume that the player is still Gordon Freeman. The game begins by dropping the player into the map without any fanfare.

Even though I was let down by the opening, I immediately could tell that the maps were built with a lot of attention to detail. The environment used a lot of interesting shapes and detail brushes. If I had one complaint about the visuals, it’s that most of the lighting was the same sort of warm tones. I’ll come back to that in a bit.

What little story exposition is given to the player is shown through a scripted sequence; while crawling through a vent, I witnessed a squad of Combine soldiers firing on some rebels. This set up my expectations for combat well and was a good way to introduce tension into the map.

The puzzles in the first map were put together well. The very first puzzle is a simple stacking puzzle with a vent and a single oil drum. That was a great start because it didn’t require me to think too much but it did force me to interact with the environment.

Similarly, once you pick up the crowbar the map eases you into using it by allowing you to break into a small boarded off area for extra health.

The second map went by pretty quickly. Combat encounters with the Combine were fairly standard but the map made good use of verticality. My favorite section was a tall chamber with multiple levels I had to descend down to meet the Combine charging up. I did really poorly because one of them snuck up the stairs closest to me and fired on me at close range.

I was really excited for the third map, Surface. The way the map began with the dead hunter got me really excited about what I was going to find and it tied in with Episode 2 well. The arctic environment looked great and made good use of environmental effects.

Using the same chopper from Episode 2 in such a fitting location was a nice touch as well. I was really looking forward to what was going to happen I thought I was going to have to defend the chopper from waves of enemies.

Instead, the mod ended abruptly with a cut to the title. Just when it was getting really good, it was over. Ultimately, nothing in the mod told me I was Adrian Shepherd. Aside from the final scene, nothing told me that it was the arctic base either. The warm colors really threw me off. It was clearly a rebel base, but it could have been any other rebel base.

The mod had great detailing and fantastic pacing. I can’t wait to play more maps by this author. The two things I’d want from a follow up to this map are more variety in the enemies and encounters and a stronger narrative focus. This mod was well made, but like others before, it failed to tell me what happened to Adrian.

  3. Maybe?
    The story:

This game don’t have a “real” story. The first map, you spawn in a sort of corridor, and then you walk, you found weapon, you kill enemies, you follow the path… And then you found the helicopter and…. the end.
Normally a game or a mod tell you a story.

    The mapping:

The level design is a bit strange. Sometimes you are in huge places with lots of details. This is cool.
Some other times, you are in big places with, no detail…
The displacements are good. Except maybe in the surface, sometimes the cliff looks strange.
And you can found a lots of way to go outside the map! This is the thing, when you test your map/ mod / game, you should do, check every piece of the map to found way to go outside.
Again in “The surface” chapter, in the truck you have crate. You take them, you place them near the wall were the is this little watch tower, you can go outside… You should have placed fences with clips!

    The lightning:

In games, light is the most important thing! In this mod, the light were too linear. Like in dev mod, when you create you map, you add a light entity, you give it a yellowish color and then you try your map. Then after uploading you games, you make the light looks more realistic, less linear. It’s really easy to do in Hammer! Did you do that? Because, for exemple, in the vent, there was just a simple model, with a simple light, you should have added a 50% to 0% fade.

    The sound:

There was the sound of you fighting combine, there was some soundscape elements.
However, most of the time there wasn’t any sound.
You should have places soundscape to simulate engine in the background, because there were a lots of machinery, but any sound. Soundscape can help you making machinery sound. Why don’t you use them?
And finally, no music in the battle moment.
I can understand you didn’t want to add the hl2 soundtrack to your mod and you don’t know how to make good music so let’s skip that.

    The enemy:

There were just combine, no hunters(thanks). The battle moments were really easy, the combine just try to come to you without hiding behind object or anything. That produce in a regroupements of combines were you launch a grenade or something like that and you are done.
You should have worked with info_node_hint. It produce really good battle moment, when you learn to use them correctly.

    In conclusion:

Continue like that, worked more on your map for the no-details area, play with light to make them more realistic. Go on the Valve developer Community and documents yourself, and then you’ll be a pretty good moder!

  4. Maybe?

Should you play this mod? I don’t know. I really don’t know.

First off, l was excited to play another mod that used the advanced Source engine from Episode 2, and had even more anticipation when l found it could be related to the official game’s storyline. As much as l hate to post negative reviews (let alone on my favourite games!), l have to say l wasn’t satisfied once l finished.

I just fought my way through various Combine encounters to reach the helicopter. That’s it.
I honestly expected more. Maybe add something interesting, like a glimpse of G-Man talking with Mossman behind a window, or the Borealis model itself. Nothing in the mod’s description, other than the location, matches with what is in the game.

The only thing l liked about the mod is that some Combine do a flop whilst hurling from a grenade explosion. Funny, but it doesn’t change my mind.

When l see a mod with some significant Half-Life 2 element (e.g. the title or the characters in the description), l expect either a closely-related, or even loosely-based story relating to the official games. This mod didn’t have a real story. Thus, this mod has not earned my best positive feedback. This could have been better.

  5. Heinz

Ok, let me get this straight.

First of all, this is only my opinion and not any disrespecting of other mappers, modders and their projects.
Neither it is my intention to rate down anything, so that people are influenced by me, but
I can’t understand why this mod gets a rating of maybe or play later and that “crap” of “DEFENDVILLE” gets carried to the sky like a hero.
It made me a little bit angry and left me disappointed.
Sorry but if I want to fight against hordes of chaos, I play Serious Sam or something like that.

    Now to Aurora-Mod:

It was too short…what the author did in six weeks, some of the RTSL community’s mappers do a better job in two weeks, but
I had fun playing this little piece of HL²-Universe, even it was only for 15 minutes, although it lacks of a story and exitement.

    1. Comparing contest mod and regular release is not really good idea, Defendville gets “play it now” mainly because it’s compared to other Contest mods, then all the maps are rated separately in most reviews.

Also in the begining you are outraged by rating of others, but then you review it as Short and lacking of story and exitement, even saying that it could be done better in two weeks by some mappers.

I don’t want to argue with you but from your text it sounds like “Maybe” would fit even your review

    2. @Heinz: To be fair, I gave Aurora a Play It Later review. That’s sort of like a 4/5 (or 4/6 if you count personal favorites) on RTSL. It’s not exactly like a 4/5 because it’s more qualitative than quantitative (the review is telling players to play it when they have time but not to go in with high expectations) but it isn’t a bad score either.

I was kind of surprised that DefendVilleTwo received all Play It Now scores. I would have expected at least one Play It Later. I think it got that score because the best entries in the pack were very enjoyable. I don’t really understand your criticism comparing DefendVilleTwo to Serious Sam. Half-Life 2 featured a lot of moments where you have to defend an area; even if it didn’t, that wouldn’t make it a less interesting theme. The theme wasn’t chosen by the entrants anyways.

DefendVilleTwo and Aurora are so different that I don’t really see any point of comparison. You should write a comment or a review for DefendVilleTwo, as it could help the entrants improve.

  6. Heinz

    Oh please wait,
I don’t think DEFENDVILLE is totally crap.
Technically, perhaps it is one of the best competitions, don’t really know.
I compared the two releases on being fun to play or not, just for me!
That is the reason why I wrote not to disrespect or downvote any work of others, just telling my opinion.
No I won’t write a review for DV, because I don’t want to spend any more time on this.

    @Stanleyros
I wasn’t outraged of the ratings, I was outraged, because the DV left me angry and disappointed.
That is nobodys fault, because everybody has another taste.
And you know, there’s no accounting for taste.

    PLEASE:
Don’t get me wrong, I really like this site and its communtity and also the fact that the site is family friendly and nobody does insult others and so on…
And English is not my mother language, so sometimes it is hard for me to explain what I think and feel.
Pls don’t hurt me for that 😛

  7. ikar

Very short mod: the author started to make it, but quickly lost interest, and quickly completed it… At least, he published it, did not throw it away, as do many other…

Do not forget that the mod requires the installed Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer (however, the client by self will offer you to download it and install)

For a long time did not come here to write something … although I regularly read and play mods, there were some very good contests. 🙂

I’m still waiting when Phillip organizes a big project, and modders will make a big mod, during the year.

  8. In this mod nothing special. Short and many combines. So, you can play, but if want. 🙂
In general, in the modification there is nothing supernatural, but you can put an estimate of 4, nothing like mod as mod ….

  9. Maybe?

This mod is way too short for it to be interesting or tell a story. You work your way through a series of firefights through a short ice covered tunnel, and you reach a helicopter and its over.

    Possible improvements:
Extend the mod and focus on a meaningfull mission e.g. start outside in sight of the helicopter, but unable to reach it. Cue the player to some way in (use light or sound or some other obvious cue) and have him end up in basically the same place as now.
Show the player where he is going while moving through the base e.g. show helicopter platform through windows.
Show or tell the player he needs to reach the helicopter; now it just serves as a default ending but nowhere in the mod itself you are aware of the helicopter

    Some notes on particular details:
Why do you get a rocket launcher in the last map? This suggested a battle with some harder target than some combine elite soldiers.
Combat is challenging enough most of the time but quite often this is due to lack of cover and rushing combine or enemies in advantageous tactical positions (e.g. being able to shoot at you while you can’t really get to them.). The player needs to be able to do something more than just run for it or run right at the combine trying to kill them before being killed himself.

The layout and design of the maps in this mod was OK but not remarkable.

  10. Don’t get me wrong.

This MOD was pretty fun to play and i reccomend it.
There is only one problem,it’s too small.
But,other than that, there’s nothing else wrong

  11. I quite enjoyed this mod. Very short and nothing special about it.

See my review-ish video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1-ldz9Gtak

  12. Play It Later

I thought this was really, really excellent. The design and settings were superb but great attention to detail. I also love the wintery setting towards the end, which was sadly so short. Wow i was gutted by this and wanted it to carry on. Anyhow, i generally found the place a great battle but there was lots of places where I could have fought from afar and these would have been nice to have had the crossbow. Anyhow, this needs to be bigger! I was looking for a good adventure here but it ended all too soon. Shame, because I loved what there is.

Oh and I’m on the Mac, so I needed to copy the binaries into the bin folder for it to work.

  13. Play It Later

the first and last part of the map had more detail than the rest of it gave me a “rushed” feeling about it maybe im right author had to rush because he ran out of time maybe he has a family to look after or maybe school to finish anyways. It was short and the elevator puzzle was horribly bad made you should never do that to player its so frustrating. The crawling thorugh the door glass part wasnt so clear i didnt stuck there as long as phillip and dolmo did and thats only because about the red light that shines behind the door it did lead me to go take a second look at the door thats how i find that the glass has been broken for some reason and i assume that the reason is a outside explosion but if someone bombed above the underground base it should dealt more damage to enviroment instead of only breaking the door’s glass :P.The last battle was too short and you can avoid the enemies easliy by running away from them to helicopter but if you choose to fight there is not enough cover for the player also as “IMakeLevels” suggested the enemies at the tower are really hard to see.i give 6/10 3 for making a mod and 3 for it wasnt bad 🙂 keep making mods

  14. Ed

Hi, having problem with loading the game, i choose it then press play button in Gauge, Valve logo loads and then back to Gauge, game is not loading, i have EP2 installed, Source SDKs installed too… what could be the problem?

  15. Maybe?

The beginning of the mod was dissapointing. You just, start out of nowhere. Were you teleported there by gman? Had he already escaped gmans grip and started working for the resistance? There is nothing there to tell you. Also Shepard is wearing an H.E.V. suit for reasons unknown.

After walking around for a while I noticed that the visuals were lacking something. The brushwork was great yes, but the lighting was flat and boring. There was a lack of sound too. You would expect some distant gunshots because well the base was under attack but nope its peace and quiet.

After getting the crowbar it was just your average Half-Life 2 mod; A shooting gallery. After shooting for a while and climbing and jumping you get to the outside. And well, I expected more. You just run outside, shoot a little and run to a helicopter and the mod is over.

Overall just the average hl2 mod with an interesting idea that was not used to its full potential.

  16. Maybe?

I have played this before a long while back and i seem to remember hunters in the last map; maybe just mistaken memories?
Anyway this is an okay short mod, lots of action and decent visuals and you will be kept on your toes Mr Shepard in a HEV suit. Well he also does stuff for Big G!
No hunters and no helicopter takeoff make the ending somewhat deflating…

  17. zeberdee

Needing major help here. Installed the mod, started steam and launched the mod.
That’s where the problem starts. The screen goes black, you hear the Valve music intro start, then it appears to drop out back to Steam, BUT the music still continues to play.
Using the ALT-TAB I can switch to the actual MOD window, but all it shows is a black screen, only for a couple of seconds, before it again drops back to Steam. To exit the mod, I have to force it closed using the task manager to close the HL2.EXE file.
All games are up-to-date and the HL2 EP2 is set to Beta. I’ve noticed someone else has this problem, could it be yet another MOD broken by a Steam update (AGAIN)
    Any help would be appreciated.

    1. try opting out of the beta.

  18. Play It Now!

    Nicely made, very short map.

  19. Play It Later

I quite enjoyed this mod. It looks good and plays good for the most part.
In my opinion the amount of cover the player is given is way too little. You somtimes have to run in the open, hoping you won’t have to take too many bullets. And most of the time you WILL be taking most of the bullets, because there are a lot of Combine in this mod. Sometimes I felt like it was a little too much.
These are my major complaints, but I don’t have many more, so it’s a Play It Later for me.

  20. Play It Later

Good not great. First map is uneventful. It picks up as it goes along. Looks like there was something big planned for the ending but….

  21. Maybe?

This is a very obscure mod right here. First of all, you are playing as Adrian Shephard but why is he wearing an HEV suit? The combat, well they’re all combine soldiers. No zombies, no antlions, just pure combine soldiers. Puzzle, no puzzles at all, just run and gun.
