101 Grunts

for Half-Life

11th August 2011

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

Author’s Note: “This is my first level for Halflife. The reason its called 101 Grunts is because their are 101 grunt enemies in the level. There is also 4 Assassins and some gun turrets.

I have made this level because I think fighting the grunts was the best aspect of the gameplay in Half-Life. This level is by no means perfect. I haven’t got the AI as good as the original game but they will take cover, use doors and stairs. The architecture in the level is basic but adequate. I would appreciate some feedback on any aspects of the level.”

I really can’t rate this. If you think like the creator of this map pack (in de readme) “The soldiers are the best enemies of Half Life” and think like other people “Aliens are boring enemies and suck period” … here is plain action where you have to kill 101 grunts (yeah, readme told that so) in average-decent maps.

  2. tre

not bad nice action packed map!

  3. Anonymous

Well I’ve decided I am going to play all of the mods on the list in order (minus the ones I have already played), so seeing as this is the first one…

  4. Heyzors

Hey I put my name in the post above >(. How do I install it thought? This one is weird…

  5. Heyzors

MEH! It says the map isn’t existent when it clearly is existent.

  6. Dizeaze

Crashed while going from 101grnt1 to 101grnt2. Using Half-Life 1.1.1.0 without Steam.

  7. I didn’t got this problem but the time I testet this one it was with 1.1.0.8

  8. I played through it just now & also did not have that problem (my HL version is also up to date). I had previously told myself that I wasn’t going to play it because of the title & it was small. It was actually kind of fun. Non stop shooting spree. Helped relieve some agression.

Dizeaze, I’m not sure what’s wrong on your end. Maybe somebody else will be able to help.

  9. shawn

Instead of getting the readme.txt ‘s promised one directory titled 101grn… I got 12 different directories. When the coder is that far off at the very start of an installation, I’ve learned to quit. It’s rarely worth the trouble.

  10. Maybe?

    My rating:

This was an okay map, but seemed a little short Although this map had no story – that was not a bad thing, because it was not suppose to have one.

The combat was decent, but the game ended too soon. although the combat was good, the map design was subpar – not up to standards with the rest of the modding community

Overall; it’s not a bad map – play it if you are looking for some fast paced action – a high if you will.

Use the tilde (~) key. If you’re not using Steam, you’ll need to enable the console before you can use it. Try here for instructions.

  13. in steam highlite the game and select properties and go to the launch options. enter -console
In game select the ~ key to enter commands.

  14. Gilfrarry

Isn’t the console enabled by default in Steam? I get the console without a parameter.

  15. It wasnt before unless they changed something in steam.

    Maybe?

I like this one, there is a lot of combat against the grunts, and I had a funny time using the Snarks to bit the soldiers, haha!

    Maybe?

You only play against marines – that’s quite cool! No puzzles, just intense oldschool action! The Map Design is not that good – but it doesn’t has to be for this kind of gameplay. But BEWARE: Don’t even try it on “Hard”! The first 20 minutes or so turned to be difficult and challenging, not unfair/frustrating – but then you have only very little health left and have to fight against a bunch of Black Ops!!! A really bad joke!

  18. Phillip says Maybe

It’s a simple premise and an honest author. Kill the grunts and assassins to reach the end. Actually, there are plenty you could run by and I actually wonder if it is possible to “beat” these maps without killing any.

    Anybody want to try?

Some parts were easier than others but most is pretty routine.

The layouts and design are just to put grunts in your path, so don’t expect anything cool or amazing.

Play it only if you want to play everything and are most interested in shooting than atmosphere.

    Avoid It!

The author’s first level for Half-Life, no kidding. Rectangular rooms connected by rectangular corridors – full of prefabs, bad lighting, and 101 grunts. Also this crashed for both level transitions, so I had to load each map separately.

I don’t have much to say about this one. It’s a very simple shoot-em-up that wasn’t fun for me at all. No story, no coherent setting, plenty of challenge (I wonder if this was ever tested on a skill above 1). You get just the basic HL weapons to use – machine gun, shotgun, grenades. No glock which makes it so you can’t pick anyone off from long range.

Randmap puts out better looking and more enjoyable maps than this.

  20. Avoid It!

Would have given this a “Think Twice” or “Maybe” had the map transitions actually worked.

You have to fight 101 grunts int his map hence the name. There are also some fassns in the mix as well as sentry turrets. Started off pretty fun but got boring pretty quickly. The amount of nade spamming makes it too easy as well. I also crashed at every transition and had to impulse 101 my way through. That is basically it, enjoy.

If you want a serious game then avoid this.

  21. Think Twice

If you really like grunt fights then maybe this is for you. I found it very repetitive and got bored fairly quickly. I also found that if you loaded the first map from the console using lower case letters then it ran ok but crashed on the transition to the next map. To make it work I had to use “map 101GRNT1” and not use lower case letters. Then it transitioned fine between maps. I like the odd grunt fight as much as the next guy but this was too much for me

  22. Avoid It!

The only saving grace for this is the authors honesty. it’s just following a linear path killing grunts!

Like others I had to load maps manually because the transitions crashed the game. The first 30 seconds were fun but the repetition after that made for another boring experience. I didn’t even bother with the way this looked as I just wanted to get it over with.

  23. Avoid It!

Primitive and monotonous storages, hostile grunts. We shoot from around the corner or hide behind barrel/crate and gather SMG grenades, they’ll aid us in the hard places. The doors are on the way. Their sound is heard too often.

After loading the second map I found myself outside the map. Even noclip didn’t help. I tried to load the map manually and the game crashed. I launched it again and with the fresh start the map loaded manually. It mostly consists of the same monotonous corridors with red doors, just different wall textures.

The third map crashed exactly like the second one. After the final cutscene the game didn’t go to the main menu.

The fights are quite challenging here, one time I had to defeat a few ninjas with only 25% health, so this mappack may be recommended to those who like difficulties, but the author must fix the changelevels first.

    Play It Later

Personaly I define this mods as “paths arenas”, that mean a way to go with bunch of ennemys and where trhe only thing u have to do is keep forward and kill every grun t or allien in ur way!, I have no traumas playing this, I think this kind of maps-mods give a dynamic fluid gameplay full of action and combat, in this one we have the right ammount of combat for the concept and is ok to play it it doesn’t take long and maybe the reason because I don’t give this a play it now is because the bug of the door I couln’t open, I also think that for being the 1st map of a developer is ok, because there are some other 1st attempts so much more worse than this….

  25. 2muchvideogames

This is a simple and basic gruntfest, in fact I think this map best defines the term “gruntfest’, along with rudimentary architecture. That said, this is a very early release (1999), and the mapping techniques back then were as basic as the mapping here. Which leads to the crashes. If you play this in WON or something like that, I bet you would not have the crashing problems. Therefore I really think it’s a bit unfair to pull down the score so much due to crashing problems that have nothing to do with the author’s effort. I have played this a fair amount of times with WON in past years and have not had crashing problems, if I remember correctly. Just wanted to present an alternate review angle, thanks for reading.

  26. Maybe?

lol now that’s a REAL gruntfest! So if you like these sort of mods/maps: play it.
All others: you can leave it behind, there’s nothing special here anyway.

    Pro’s:
-LOT of action, some tactics needed
-Lot of ammo from the soldiers – no more pro’s, that’s it!

    Con’s:
-Gets boring quick, no varition, always the same scheme: open door, kill grunts, next door xD
-Poor level design, but the map is also very old
-Absolutely no varition, balance, puzzles, story
    -Less enemy -and weapontypes

oO why moderation on comment? Did I post something wrong? So when it’s gonna get moderated?

  28. Think Twice

It’s a really boring gruntfest, with not a lot of atmosphere. There’s not a lot to say here, it’s just really boring and repetitive. Play this only if you’re really bored.

  29. Think Twice

A boring an repetitive map. Mindlessly killing grunts over and over again.

Try it once, if you´re interested. Otherwise I say this map is not worth it.

  30. Think Twice

Can you play it on Hard? It’s pretty impossible, the grunts has higher chance to launch a grenade on you. Besides, less health, armor and with grunt’s higher HP level, makes it very very hard challenge on Hard mode. There’s like lack of cover or something to play on Hard. At least he could created a Infinite Health Pool for a level. It’s not nice to create a mod unplayable on Hard Mode. Even in Medium Difficulty is Hard since if you lose YOUR BALANCE you won’t make it to the end. And to not lose the balance try to hit enemies one by one and try no to be very exposed. Placing a metal barrel in every corridor would make this level possible on Hard. Up to the designer there’s actually many ways to lower the difficulty. This is like shoot-to-kill old arcade game.
