Ravenholm Clocktower

for Half-Life 2

28th May 2015

You find yourself stuck somewhere in or around Ravenholm.

Fortunately, others have been before and left a sign where to go.

If you can stay alive long enough, you may escape.

About

Author’s Note: I’ve set this map around Ravenholm’s canal system. I’ve tried to get that Ravenholm feeling – little ammo, loads of zombies and a lack of hope 🙂

It’s hopefully going to be part of a series, and it won’t necessarily be the start. It’s also pretty short, but it was starting to lag badly in parts, so I postponed enlargement for the moment.

Note:

This was originally called “Ravenholm Clocktower: Part 1” but I have removed the “Part 1” since another part was never released.

played thru the map seems very well put together but I ran into a gate I couldnt figure out how to open, but was able to slip thru the side not sure if its a bug or somthing I did. but all in all a very quick paced map with constantly spawning enimies to keep you on the move. would hope to see more parts from the creator

Even if this one only seems to be mad as a first chapter it was quite well handled and fun to play through for around half an hour

Considering this was made in 2005 it’s actually not that bad. I managed to escape in the map in about 4 places but that’s just me trying to get to places you shouldn’t.

The combat is not too hard and besides the fact you can see the zombies spawning sometimes the atmosphere is quite well done.

I’m actually interested in replaying this to see if I could avoid killing anything – it seems quite possible.

All in all, not a terrible map but the beginner-type issues override the feel and gameplay for me.

Wow! If the mapper is hearing this, then kudos to you!

The mapping is great, the enemy placements were good too (even though you could see some spawning) and it’s just classic Ravenholm. The mapper implied that he tried to include that Ravenholm feeling in the map, which he did perfectly. It’s sad that this discontinued really.

Overall, if you’re a Ravenholm fan, then this is a must. If you like HL2 maps and mods in general, then this is also a must.

I doubt he/she is considering this map was originally released 10 years ago.

I liked this map. For its failings in terms of incomplete backgrounds and areas you alternately can (the rooftops) explore, versus those you can’t (you can’t jump off the external ladder into one of the courtyards? why?), and the silliness of the instantly and infinitely spawning zombies… It was pretty fun. Exploring didn’t harm much, it wasn’t hard to get back to where you are supposed to be. I think I did mess up a trigger (where the rebels are hiding) but eh, again it was hardly a big deal.

The places we explore were very good, visually. Though I’d love to have been able to actually explore more fully and not be stuck with invisible walls in places where it was obviously wide or crouch-able to get through.

The endless zombies weren’t a problem because there was a plethora of launchable physics objects to throw at them, even if there wasn’t a lot of ammunition for the guns.

One thing that did confuse me: we didn’t actually… ever REACH or even more than once SEE the ‘clock tower’ in the title. I thought it was our goal, so I took a dunk in the canal.

All in all though, a short but pretty entertaining and reasonably well done map for such a long time ago.

Not bad. Problems under Linux: No crosshair (i had to sv_cheats and then crosshair 1)

a bit frustrating: Some barrels i could not use with the gravity gun, no cars can be used…

    1. Zekiran

None of the cars were physics props. They were part of the map, like many in hl2.

    2. JG

I’m not sure the lack of a crosshair is necessarily the map’s fault. Sometimes HL2 just loses it. Couldn’t tell you why.

There’s a general rule in HL2 that cars which can’t be pushed usually have a little pile of rubble around them. That was seen in Episode One, where they wanted to distinguish between cars that were puntable and cars that were not. Not everyone does this, however, because they might be unaware of it (it is a rather subtle thing).

      1. I’ve never noticed that, thanks for pointing it out.

  7. Play It Now!

It’s a nice looking map with an interesting route for the player to navigate through. I didn’t like the spawning enemies though and I found an invisible wall at the very beginning on the fallen telephone pole which was disappointing. Overall it is definitely worth your time to give it a play.

    1. Zekiran

Yeah I was hoping that the obvious ramp would be a way out of the first area too. Bummer that it was merely a knocked over piece, but… plenty of other opportunities to go places you’re not supposed to, if you don’t destroy a lot of crates. 😀

I liked this one. yep. It’s always nice to see Ravenholm again, so, I guess in here, I just felt that eerie and dark ravenholm feeling again.

I liked that, and the fact you can explore quite a lot in this map. Maybe the only turndown was the absence of traps that make Ravenholm a classic.

Overall I had a fun time playing this, and the battles against the zombies were just nicely done. The whole Ravenholm environment is well achieved.

I had fun, and the gas station was a sweet little touch I loved.

  9. Nice fan made sequel to Ravenholm, i liked the breakable walls and the way the map ends.

  10. Play It Later

All in all, it wasn’t that bad. The author knows what makes Ravenholm great but some polishing would have been definitely needed. I think the obvious linearity is a downside for this mod. While Ravenholm was the same it at least gave the illusion of freedom in the more open, plaza areas.

I managed to skip the section with the heavy, slowly raising suspended metal door by walking through the grates on both sides. The stairs could also use improvement beyond being just some floating grates in the air.

The gameplay was fun and you should give it a try. I hoped the Lambda decals would have been used for marking actual supply stashes rather than as a ending mark. Although the map is not that greatly optimized it is still playable.

  11. Play It Later

Finally a map that’s ravenholm and not something else! There’s everything! The gravity gun, zombies, people falling from windows, fast zombies jumping from roof at roof (if you see the background).
Sadly, you can see the zombies spawning at the mid of the map and that’s… ok?
7/10 would kill a zombie with a invisible (window) piece again

  12. Maybe?

I liked the map, without bugs, with a mini plot. But something was still not enough.

  13. Maybe?

Ok so where do I begin? The map itself looks good. It actually does look like Ravenholm duh with zombie infestation and less ammo judging the way you design it. The combat is easy, I just spam props at zombies with a gravity gun and they die in one hit. So far, so good but what took the two stars away is that it is so easy, you can actually beat this map without going through all the zombies. In other words, you can beat the map without killing one zombie How I did it is simply a propflying by spamming jump and grab with the barrel. The barrel I am talking about is the one where you find the pistol. All you gotta do, is to propfly all over the roof and eventually you will end up to your goal immediately. Might as well as play Assassin’s Creed for climbing on the roofs but I didn’t even say it’s a bad map. It’s more on the middle, not too good, not too bad.

  14. Play It Later

Good looking. Plays good. Not a fan of Zombie maps but this one was good. Zombies well placed. Replay ability.

  15. Play It Later

This is a pretty fun little map that does a pretty admirable job at replicating the feel of Ravenholm in the base game.

    Story

You have to make your way out of the outer canal areas of Ravenholm. Pretty simple, but it gets the job done. Not much else to say except that once you find the exit, the level ends.

    Presentation

The map does a great job of mimicking the feel of Ravenholm. It maintains that same dark, spooky atmosphere that worked so well and the lighting is well done, making it pretty easy to know where to go and also setting the mood.

There’s no music in the map, just letting the natural sounds be the soundtrack, and it works just as effectively as in base-game Ravenholm.

    Gameplay

The map is primarily just a point A to B affair while dealing with endless zombies the entire time. More will respawn when you kill them, so it’s best not to waste ammo. As far as your weapons, you get a small but good selection; pistol, revolver, shotgun, crowbar, and Gravity Gun, all of which can be useful in some way. The GG especially gets good use at moments as items are placed about for you to toss at zombies, always a nice choice for Ravenholm-themed maps.

Level design is good for what it is, but nothing spectacular. It looks and feels like Ravenholm for the most part. It does get a bit cramped at times, but base-game Ravenholm could as well. Otherwise, it’s laid out well enough so you don’t get too lost.

    Conclusion

Fun little short map, an enjoyable spooky romp for a little bit. Good if you’re looking for something to satiate that Ravenholm itch.
