Power Outage

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

9th January 2012

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

Gordon Freeman must fight his way into the remote arctic prison, Angel Mogila. The level is a small area of roughly the same scope as a single area in a larger Half-Life 2 level. Consequently the module is a slice of what would be a larger level. This level features stealth gameplay using a custom designed night vision effect and custom AI controllers to enable stealth gameplay. The player can elect to rush the level at a higher margin of difficulty. Power Outage also features destroyable power transformers that knock out the lights in each section of the level.

Download directly into MapTap [9.35MB]

You MUST have MapTap installed before using this link.

Download Options

Download to your HDD [9.35MB]

You can still use it with MapTap once you have downloaded it.

Important Note

This map uses the “T” key on the keyboard as the toggle between night vision. If you already had the “T” key bound for another use then you will have to manually edit the Brawley_ML.cfg file. It’s not hard. Open it in a text editor (Not MS Word or similar).

MapTap users will need to go to the location of the account they installed it to. In my case it is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\planetphilliphl2\half-life 2 episode two\hl2-ep2-sp-power-outage.7z, and edit the cfg file within that folder.

Manual Installation Instructions
  • Save the above file to a location of your choice and open it with a file archive application of your choice. I recommend 7-Zip.
  • Copy Brawley_MLRTM.bsp into your Half-Life 2: Ep2 Maps folder.
  • Copy Brawley_ML.cfg into your Half-Life 2: Ep2 cfg folder.
  • Copy nightvision_v4.raw into your Half-Life 2: Ep2 Materials folder.

  1. Phillip says Play It!

I quite enjoyed this but felt that the player should have been given the crossbow right from the beginning. Why have stealth mode and then have a very noisy machine gun?

Anyway, the level was well built with enough twists and turns to make it interesting.

I’m not a fan of stealth mode and pretty much ignored it.

he ending was rather abrupt but all in all quite a fun map to play.

Would be nice if the author allowed other modders to use the code created for the nighvision (I don’t know if it was hard to do though) and see some really detailed stealth gameplay maps.

Phillip, when I try to download this file, I get a 404 page. It looks like the filename in the download link is missing the “hl2-” prefix.

    1. Fixed. My apologies. I tested the MapTap version but forgot to test the manual one.

  3. Play It Later

Not a bad coffee break length offering, but the night-vision didn’t work, so played it without, which pretty much defeats having the night vision in the first place! As Phillip has already said:

Why have stealth mode and then have a very noisy machine gun?

Overall for what there was of it, it was a short while of fun and it didn’t look too bad, but what let it down is being able to finish the game without the authors intended stealth-mode. If the author had released this without the premise of it being a stealth game it would have still been fun, but as I didn’t have the night vision available to me I have to judge it as is.

  4. Maybe?

The night-vision didn’t work either. The combat was boring; spawn a large clump of enemies around a corner and give you a load of grenades got boring. It’s a short map with an abrupt ending. The snow looked nice. The mapping in general looked alright. It’s a nice idea if night vision worked, although the gameplay wasn’t that fun, being stealthy was boring so attempting to kill them all was the next best thing. It feels like a guildhall release, although I don’t think it is; a)Night vision would work and b) A more unique/clever idea would have been used. (No offence!)

If more effort was put into this it could be a very good map.

    1. It is definitely a Guildhall release.

      How did you install it?

      1. Through Maptap. Yeah actually now it’s obvious it is a Guildhall release!

  5. Maybe?

I don’t really like stealth games in general. This had some interesting points, but I found the night vision only worked when you loaded the map, it did not work when loading a saved game. Not sure why this happened but it made it less enjoyable for me.

    Did not like?

However much these guys paid for this guildhall course it wasn’t worth it…

… should ask for their money back!

  7. Maybe?

A stealth map really should begin with a stealthy weapon or unarmed if that is the mapper’s intention.
Nice short map that started with some fun stealth, but quickly turned into firefight!
I did not see any other way and to make matters worse, I was shot at while ” stealthing” in the shadows! And then attacked while on the gantry trying to get to the power box to be stealthy!
This was an ok sort of mod, but I wanted stealth not a combine killing marathon!
Not a fan of the green-screen night vision as it kind of negates the price I paid for my graphics card! But it did work well.
I am a fan of the snow scene in mods and this was nicely done. And nice illuminations to! Just some falling snow and it would be pretty to……J

    Play It Now!

I really enjoy the stealth dynamic on this one, altough I felt it was a pretty shorty map and also I felt it incomplete, imean did the CMB shoot the so called defector??, i’d like this at least to be 2 maps, because I don’t know I wanted more of that sthealthy dynamic, also I agree that if stealth is the main role for this map, then the crosbow should have been provide first like inside that container at the beggining of the map, hope this stealth code could be shared and we see it in some further maps or mods, but I don’t know if some mapper would use that dynamic again.

  9. Play It Later

Once again another situational map like Runaway Train and Uplifted. This one however has more of a theme and story line which I actually enjoyed. In fact out of the three maps I felt this one was the best.

The idea of “hiding in the shadows” is nothing new to video games. Just take a look at metal gear solid to see how popular of an idea it is. However, this map executes the whole feature wrong. The idea of hiding in the shadows in games like MGS is essential because a single shot (or being caught) can kill you. In HL2 though (and in this map) getting caught means nothing to a seasoned Half-Life player. I found myself ignoring the shadows and running and gunning. Especially since the mapper GIVES you suit power it makes you almost unstoppable. There is no REASON to stay in the shadows or stay hidden. Perhaps if the mapper gave a reason this map would receive a higher score.

Aside from that though, the visuals are quite good. I liked the snowy atmosphere, the lighting was fantastic and I liked the way you could shoot out the lights around you. I think every map/mod should have some sorta of dynamic environment like that.

I couldn’t get the nightvision working, even though I installed the map properly, but I can see from Phillips screenshots that it was implemented well (sometimes nightvision can be horrible). Overall this map is pretty cool…

  10. Play It Now!

I enjoyed this map. Well balanced combat, just enough ammo, health and hand grenades. I ignored the stealth and night vision mostly because I wanted to play it like any other HL2 map. Having to navigate dark areas is one of the reasons I play HL2 mods. Also, the constant stealth message displayed in the middle of the screen was a distraction. Still a good map.

  11. Play It Later

another shorty worth the play, as said previous the title and concept didn’t fit the gameplay, Stealth ? using nades and machine guns?

  12. Play It Later

I use RDFG instead of WASD, so for me it was a bit annoying that the nightvision toggle on T overrode my use key. Not a big thing, though. As others have mentioned, the stealth gameplay was interesting, but requires dedicated roleplaying, as there isn’t actually any real penalty for stepping out of the shadows – unless you consider regular combat with Combine soldiers a challenge.

Indeed starting a stealth map with the annoying smg and not even my trusty crowbar is not very appealing. Having to blast or shoot every ammo crate just breaks the purpose. And I was also annoyed by the fact that ar2 isn’t pickeable and combine would start shooting randomly when I was near them or even with my back turned on them, looks like their algorithm needs more testing and tweaking.
The mapping is simple with some very boring small rooms, even the big ones look boxy, but I liked the outdoors and hope to see more of the snowy theme in future maps and mods.
I noticed a good autosave though, therefore it felt rather polished and no other noticeable bugs, decent combat, so give it a try.

  14. Personal Favourite

Sorry y’all above.. but I absolutely LOVED this map. The stealth aspect was indeed eerie and surreal at times. To be so close and unknown!! It was slightly flawed ..ahem.. as it’s stealth and you have bombs and a gun. TBH, I did expect nothing more than a crowbar and a crossbow. And so glad that came in shortly afterwards. But this is a PF of mine now, I just know I’ll be playing this over and over. I do hope one day a revised version will appear with more design towards more stealth and also towards the use of just a crossbow and nothing more? I dunno..

But I know I so so sooooo love this map. Wonderful work!
    Now, MORE! 😀

  15. Maybe?

HL2 is just not the right game for any attempts at stealth and this map is no exception.

The main purpose of stealth should be to completely avoid combat as far as possible (like in the Thief or Splinter Cell games), while this map only uses it for surprising your enemies, which may be fun once or twice, but is getting boring very quickly. IIRC you have to kill more or less every single enemy in this map – so much for stealth. And with your HEV suit and your weapons there’s no need for stealth anyway. If you want sneaky gameplay, then give the player some patrolling guards and a crossbow instead of large clumps of enemies and grenades. It also happens quite often that enemies are spotting you, even when you’re not moving and in the shadows. To put the final nail in the “Maybe” coffin, we’re getting supply crates, but no crowbar or gravity gun, which is generally awkward, but having to shoot these crates with your SMG is (obviously) particularly non-immersive in an stealth setting.

A typical Guildhall map: nice ideas, but very average gameplay.
