I played this game some time ago and noted the following.

Very good game, hard but fair, great set battles, one jump for me was impossible without cheat.

  6. Play It Now!

Just finished it and yes its hard. Also founs a few glitches (dead soldiers still walking etc)but generally it was very well done. Its also a very long mod IMO and you dont always get to help aliens in alot of mods.

    1. Yea but that’s a funny glitch. My all time favorite glitch is when they start twitch spazin like Tina Turner..lol

There are so many great old HL1 mods out there, If any one want a list of the best, I can supply.

I’ve just downloaded it from the Filecloud Server and scanned it and found nothing. I use Comodo Antivirus. Perhaps somebody else could download it and double check it.

  10. Nothing detected by Avast either.

thanks i’ll try again in a bit, it was AVG taht I was using.

I just scanned the file with My Norton AV, found nothing, and extracted to a temp folder, same thing. Hope that helps ya!

just tried it again and same thing happened, weird.

  14. Tell your AV to ignore that file or turn it off

  15. piledriver

Another really good old mod. Play on hard and it’s very hard. A good story with logical progression. Great set piece battles and smaller tactical fights. Well designed variety of compact environments and large open scenes. Nice bit of 3rd person at the end. Only one small gripe, too many soldiers visibly spawning from nowhere after you think you’ve cleared an area – would have been better to hide them. Still a good mod and well worth the download.

  16. Ade

It starts with no hev and I can’t find any along the way, but I saw hev batteries once or twice.
Did anyone had the same problem? It makes the mod really hard, almost unplayable to fight with only the last acquired weapon…

  17. piledriver

The HEV is there, not long after you get the shotgun from the grunt. You need to make sure you’ve looked everywhere. (No spoilers from me!) Have another go Ade, this is a good mod.

  18. Ade

I already started this mod twice, and every time I would go back several times just for that hev suit and no luck, but I will give it another go, and if that doesn’t help, maybe someone will give me a spoiler.

  19. piledriver
    Play It Now!

    OK. SPOILER ALERT
Ade. Just after the change to the 2nd map. L2.
Some blue cabinets? Yes? The nearby crowbar is a clue.
Bet you ran right past. I did the first time.
    Kick yourself now!

  20. Robspace 1

It’s been good up until the part I’m stuck at now. It’s a cut scene that won’t end. I’m outdoors on another planet and they want me to help fight the bad guys. They said to take the spaceship but I can’t get going from this scene.-I can’t noclip out of it as it’s a cut scene and I’m pretty sure that won’t work. Too bad as this was a fun one.

  21. Robspace 1
    Play It Now!

Good game!- It actually has a good story and a reason to live. There is a goal here to take out some generators and bad guys and it all comes together nice. The artwork is real good and the whole game has lots of fighting and you can actually win a round or two and stay off the cheats. I did have to noclip through a few doors as I could just not figure out the trick to getting them to open.It would be nice to have a walkthrough on this one as it is fairly hard to get through without cheating. I really don’t think I could make it without help from noclip. The doors and buttons are a little hard to see and the mod is pretty dark in most spots but it’s a good fun game-Well worth the trouble.

  22. Ade

The hev part was hard, I finally got it, but other than that, no big puzzles that I can remember, just difficult fights. I’m torn between finishing this and taking it from the top for a walkthrough.. I personally didn’t like the first map with no hev, I played the first two maps too many times ;)) and yes, the enemies spawning from the ceiling at unknown intervals is annoying.. what was the author thinking?

  23. Robspace 1

Ade-I had no problem finding the suit but there was not enough ammo and I had trouble locating the buttons to open the doors. I also was not able to get the gaurd to follow me .

  24. Talon
    Play It Now!

I recall having a lot of fun playing this mod! I remember, after one particularly brutal fight with marines, turning around and seeing the concrete wall behind me riddled with bullet holes. This mod is well worth your time in my opinion.

  25. Phillip says Maybe

I am going against the tide of recommendations here for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the visible spawning of enemies is a huge immersion breaker for me. Not only do they spawn in front of you but they also spawn in areas you have cleared with no way for them to be there.

Secondly, the combat is often overwhelming, mainly by the sheer numbers of grunts. I never actually cheated (except to noclip when I got stuck in a lift and didn’t want to replay from my last save) but it was too tough.

The cutscenes nearly drove me crazy, especially the last ones.

The problem is that there were some really great sections, I am thinking of the vast vats of radioactive sludge, that required some careful strategy, plus a few others.

The idea of the alien grunts being your friend was never fully exploited, which was a shame.

I have to admit that I was quite happy when it finished.

Like so many mods of around this period It would have been much better if it was half the size – back in the day it seemed to be about how long you can make stuff.

Anyway, it’s worth playing but be warned those enemies will appear from nowhere!

  26. Ten Four Reviews

Let’s get this clear & upfront—Hidden Evil is a good first release, make no mistake about that. In fact, one could go so far as to call it great as a first release, considering its potential. But like most first releases, this one has its share of problems…or more accurately, one big problem. One with a snowball effect.

What’s good about Hidden Evil is that it’s fairly typical as HLSP map packs go. Lots of Marine-based combat in a somewhat Black Mesa-type setting that goes outdoors as well as it does indoors, lots of action, and lots of variety in level design. You’ll see just about every Black Mesa theme, ranging from labs and warehouses to other areas reminiscent of Half-Life’s We’ve Got Hostiles, Apprehension, Residue Processing, and Surface Tension. All technically well-built, although there are some sloppy moments like fullbrights and flashing textures. Needless to say, the ongoing variety keeps things interesting as far as scenery goes. But level design itself starts out poorly—you have to go almost approximately 15 minutes without an HEV suit, and a good portion of this chunk involving Marine-based combat. Not being able to see what your health is for that long is very annoying, and unfair. However, once you do acquire the HEV suit, things get a bit better, and from there, keep getting better. Level design visibly improves as you play—it’s almost too noticeable. Variation in setting, architecture, complexity, and creativity is a definite highlight. Fairly good detail too, although the author clearly isn’t too attentive to it all the time.

That brings us to what the author really wasn’t attentive to—practical gameplay. Gameplay is tainted in many respects: (1) Unnecessarily over-the-top combat that almost begs the use of the ‘god’ cheat code at least once. No matter how skilled you are, the way some fights are set up, you’ll either die a swift death from M203 grenades in your face, multiple shotgun buckshots, or scatter fire. The fact that sometimes more Marines spawn in from thin air (á lá Ross Smith’s Timeline III) makes things a lot worse. (2) Other setups are equally infuriating, especially with respect to badly-placed ceiling auto-turrets. (3) The unequal distribution and faulty usage/placement of alien and human enemies. (4) A lot of potentially-great set-pieces are ruined by aggravating combat. (5) Certain scripted sequences literally occur right under you if you move too fast (you’ll end up dying in the process). Further flaws include the complete ignorance of Half-Life’s CD soundtrack, a technical mishap in the ending (apparently the author forgot to switch to firstperson view after a thirdperson-view cutscene), a flimsy story that really doesn’t do much, and an overall lack of cohesion.

The unfortunate thing is that all these flaws together create the bulk of a series of let-downs that pummel Hidden Evil into the ground. In the end you might be wondering why you bothered to play it—but if you do play this, do it on Medium or even Easy. Thanks to obviously confused design, handily this map pack earns an ambivalent thumb.

  27. Think Twice

Those grunts (and alien mobs) spawning from nowhere is the biggest no no that I can imagine. What was the mapper thinking.

Mapping wasnt anything special, way too much battles and just few minor “puzzles”. And I was hoping to see more co-operation with AGrunts.

I should be enjoying gaming, but this mod made me angry.

  28. Maybe?

This could have been the best mod in the 100 but alas it wasn’t. It looked great but after a while the spawning grunts really got on my nerves.

Phillip pretty much has said what I think sums the mod up:

the visible spawning of enemies is a huge immersion breaker

The cutscenes nearly drove me crazy

The look and the feel had a familiarity about it that I just couldn’t put my finger on until the end titles and then a look at Marvin’s read-me:

“The level-design is a mix of HALFLIFE and some little bits of STAR TREK: Voyager Elite Force”

If only he had included 7 of 9 as an ally that alone would have made it a PF (Sorry Alyx!). I absolutely have to say I would loved to have seen his part two for HL2, but that is now cancelled. After about half way the spawning of enemies became a real deal breaker for me and I switched on god mode just to see what came next and finish the game otherwise I would probably put it on the back burner for when I could be bothered.

The third person part at the end could have done with some sort of clue as I only discovered it by accident by touching a movement key and noticing Gordon moving in the distance.

  29. Maybe?

This mod could be really good but it was spoiled for me by the constant spawning of grunts in an area after you cleaned it. I also dislike the fact that it is an installer instead of a zip file. There’s lots to this but I got really tired of it after awhile

  30. Unq
    Avoid It!

Well, this takes the prize from Assault on Roswell for the most frustrating mod of the 100 Days (so far). This is painful to play through, and I couldn’t wait to finish it. I took a break part way through playing this, and happened to check which map I was on. Imagine my dismay when I found out I was only on map 8 of 20. 🙁

There’s little fun about this pack. While the combat is solid and tough, you get enemies (particularly marines) spawning from thin air right in front of you all the time. The mapping is varied but overall rather blocky and basic, lacking detail. This mapper definitely went for quantity over quality, and the result is a chore to play through.

And this mapper is just evil in some parts. Like the maneuvering you have to do on and between vats of radioactive material, which is a cleverly done part. But then you reach your goal at the end, a catwalk, and of course the catwalk collapses leaving you to fall back to the floor. Imagine if near the end of the puzzles in Residue Processing if Valve forced you to just do it all over again because a landing you jumped to collapsed. It’s infuriating.

There’s some half-baked and poorly executed story about how you’re working with the aliens (who betray you anyway and even before then tend to shoot you). And some bizarre third person sequence at the very end if you decide to subject yourself to the full wrath of this mod.

Don’t download this one. I don’t know what Calyst was smoking when he wrote that Ten Four review.

    Play It Now!

Play it just because there’s a hell of a combat in this mod!!, this mod probably has the most carnage-full loaded battles in which i’ve ever been, but I know that spawning grunts and xenian ennemys was just too much annoying, is probably the worst aspect of this mod but over all I think the heavy battles may serve to polish your combat skills into HL world, the story is odd and not quite clear expressed in the mod, and the ending is odd, but it feels ok, after those hard ass time combat u have here at 98% of the whole mapping, maybe is too much mayhem I think, but for me is ok!, so if u like really heavy combat this is 4 u!

Oh another think I forgot to state, this mod is really difficult at the begining and was really annoying not having the freakin HEV suit the first 4 or 3 maps god that was so irresponsible from the author please never do that!!!, because the mod gives u a really hard bad 1st impression in the gameplay, so I think is a really bad layout from the beggining!

  32. Avoid It!

Wow, this was worse than Vlokam1…

This is one of the only three mods in the 100SDoN that I have wanted to give up on because it was so boring and not enjoyable. I don’t even want to write much about it so I’ll just be quick. First of all the thing I hate most in games in which you can be attacked are respawning enemies. Not only does this mod do that but it also puts them in the middle of nowhere with no explanation. One of my most hated things in the HL universe is ARnade spamming, in both single player and deathmatch. This mod gives the grunts way too many ARnades and it is the same with you. This is the reason why this mod is so incredibly easy and incredibly hard, the parts that you have to kill grunts with ARnades is frustratingly difficult, but once you get them it becomes really easy. It does that pretty much all game over and over. There were way too many glitches in this game too. It’s also evident that there was lazy mapmaking in this mod too, for example you don’t need to stay on the tram because you can walk to the end of the route via the wire which isn’t electrical and there are plenty of areas in which there is a transition in the middle of a fight which is a huge error in my opinion.

This started off really well, but once the ARnade spamming started it divebombed into an “Avoid It!”

  33. Maybe?

Some rooms look good, but in general, the design has much room for improvement.

The battles are challenging, but sometimes they become too difficult. There are doors that kill you if you touch them. Enemy spawn out of the air is also a flaw. There are some “puzzles”, which are identical – you just try to press every button, if that didn’t work, try to break every machine, and this works. So there’s no need to think at all after the first one. The destruction of the bridge was spectacular.

The cutscenes are too protracted, the last interactive cutscene looks cool, though.

In this mod I saw the idea that I thought about when I was reading the “Mappers, never underestimate how stupid players can be” article – give another crowbar in case the player misses the first one. Here we see HEV suits in more obvious places in case the previous ones were missed, but it’s hard to miss the first suit, because there are clues that it’s around here somewhere. They made me return and find it.

During the train ride I got out of the train and went forward. Good thing that the author did this possibility, because the train was too slow. I liked the car rides.

The last maps are horrible. There are unwinnable fights and unpredictable airstrikes. The containers on L17 looked like a way to progress, but turned out to be a way out of the map. After loading L18 through the console, I found out that I was actually supposed to enter one of them.

Is seems like this mod was made by a beginner. He really tries to do everything well, but lack of experience shows itself.

  34. ebsiman

I’m stuck on L12. I can’t find a way to open the locked door. In screenshot 47 it looks like a power failure has occurred (lights are out) which might unlock the door. I did blow up the box on the wall to the right of the window (again screenshot 47) but that didn’t do it. I’ve tried switching/breaking/blowing up every thing from the lower room up through to the upper room where the locked door is. Am I missing something or did the game maybe encounter a bug and fail to trigger the power failure when I blew up that box?

  35. Mel
    Maybe?

If you like a challenge then Hidden Evil is for you, but you might tier of the relentless combat and longevity of the mod. This Mod is tailored made for the die-hard combat lovers of the Half Life world, and apart from the endless Grunt encounters there’s nothing else in the way of gameplay variation, it’s gun fight mayhem from beginning to end.

The Grunt encounters are tough and rank among the hardest ever laid down by a HL custom mod, my advice is to play on easy level, you will find even on this level the mod is very hard to beat. If you can finish this mod without cheating on any of the grunt encounters, then you did well, I managed them all bar one, that being the encounter at the end of Level 16.

There is a re-spawning issue that as been voiced by most that have played the mod, the issue being weather the degree of re-spawning is fair or not, I am not sure on that issue but for sure it was unnecessary.

The end is a relief in many ways, with little variation to the gameplay even the most die-hard gun fight lovers, like me, have had their fill.

  36. Maybe?

As there are already many details about the story described above there’s no need to explain it any more, except it’s decent but nothing extraordinary. The author could have made it better, as it sounded interesting at first.
So what do we have here? It’s an action-packed mod with LOT of tough combat scenes, almost no puzzles but it has a long playtime and the maps (total of 20) are well done. It contains some larger outdoor areas but mostly it’s indoor. There are a few vehicles that can be driven and you sometimes need to keep a guard or scientist alive to help you open doors.
Usually you just have to fight your way through the next section, hit some buttons and that’s it.
This mod could have been a milestone if the many flaws wouldn’t make it frustrating around almost every corner (see con’s).
The feature that Alien Grunts are helping you, is, just as people noticed already, not very often and therefore neglectable.

    Pro’s:
-Action, action and yes, action! – in the meaning of combat around every corner (guess there are like 250-350 enemies in total, or even more!)
-Good mapping, layouts – some new graphics, prefabs
    -Quite long playtime
-Almost every HL weapon available (except Hive Hand)
    -A few, easy “puzzles”
    -A few scripts
    -Outdoor areas
-Intro with instructions, during playing more objectives (text messages) make clear what to do
    -Ridable vehicles

    Con’s:
-Oddities such as lot of spawning human grunts out of nowhere, also the leveldesign sometimes is just ridiculous
-Therefore it can (or will?) be frustrating at quite many points
-Balancing – altho there are many healthkits / chargers it’s too hard cause of the spawning grunts it can get a nightmare quick (quantity is indeed not quality)
    -Almost no puzzles
-Story sounds nice, but can be neglected ingame – it’s just shooting to the next map
-No HEV at start (can be found in map 2, there’s another one later too)
-Often silly AI – sometimes funny, often a warm welcome as there are really lot of grunts
-Minor bugs like getting stuck, scripts, game crash, jumping out of the map at one point possible
    -Dead(ly) ends
    -Disappointing end

  37. Play It Later

Play it later, but play it by all means! It’s a very good episode to test your combat skills, especially on hard 🙂 .

  38. Think Twice

This is the most frustrating entry I have ever played. Seriously, the map layout seems fine but there are almost no puzzles in the game and few mistakes, just pure combat. But speaking of combat, this is the reason why I gave this a “Think twice” rating because it’s dreadful. I get it, rampaging against a group of human grunts is a challenge but it gets tedious when two or three of them spawn in thin air right in front of you and when they die, they respawn like 5 – 6 times, it gets annoying. With less health and armor, it becomes unbalanced, tempting you to just play the game on godmode. Although it is still beatable without cheating on normal, I can’t imagine how this would go on hard. Don’t get me started with how the game starts. You have no suit at all until the second map and you’re already fighting a bunch of marines. How could the author screw that up? As for the grunts, they spam grenade launchers and shotguns at you as they spawn in thin air. So no matter how skilled you are, it leaves you almost no room to evade them especially in tight spaces, narrow corridors, and vents. It says that you get to ally with the alien grunts but they barely kill one or two human grunts and they’re dead. Also, most of the alien grunts are not even allies with you so they’re pretty useless. So in summary, this mod is just unbalanced. It’s not fun to play with human grunts spamming grenade launchers and shotguns at you as they spawn in thin air 5 – 6 times.
