Bridge the Gap 2.0

for Half-Life

30th October 2020

Those pesky HECU boys are at it again. Just look at what they’ve gone and done this time. Lowering the bridge leading to the surface elevator and then sealing off the control room. Even worse than that, this part of the facilty is crawling with Xenians and their ongoing dispute with the Black Mesa Science Team over how dead they should be doesn’t appear to be easing off at all!

Author’s Note: This map has been designed and tested with the hardest difficulty in mind and as such, plays best on Skill 3. You can set this in the console before starting the map, by simply typing skill 3

This map is a 2020 remake of the author’s Bridge the Gap, made as an unofficial Goldsource map for the BridgeVille mapping challenge from 2017!

  1. Play It Now!

Short and sweet map in a classic half life setting. It looks great (impressive considering it only uses stock assets from a game 20+ years old), has an interesting layout and nice atmosphere. Perhaps more importantly I thoroughly enjoyed playing it. There’s a fun mix of human and alien encounters, straight forward navigation puzzles and goodies to reward exploration.

I found the first major grunt battle a bit tough going on medium and the elevator shaft slightly fiddly (when are goldsrc ladders not)! However, they were short enough not to be frustrating and it’s been a long time since I played Half Life so am rusty.

All said this is my kind of map and I’d certainly recommend giving it a try.

  2. Play It Now!

That was fun… and extremely difficult. The way Half-Life is supposed to be!
Extremely clear premise with the exit practically in view as soon as the map loads in.
The first HECU battle took longer than I would like to admit. It is slightly more difficult with only one door to exit the “metal office” but the windows give a good view to the stairs and the other side where there is the soldier who always seems to have his finger on the alt fire button and manages to hit me every time. The layout to that bigger room that the metal office was in was great though and could be utilised well.

The map was well paced throughout with nice beefy combat sections and some obstructions. The map suffered from heavy frame drops in the coolant room but not to any detrimental level. Both the coolant room battle and the final HECU battle were well set up for mobility and navigation. The “surprise” at the end was fun as it really subverted all expectations.

Overall, a fun bite-size Half-Life experience! It makes me want to go and create my own HL map of the same calibre!

  3. Wesp5

Indeed, a great little map showing that even after all these years graphics matter less than good gameplay!

  4. Play It Now!

Rember me the 1.0 version but with something that for me fits more this time and especially graphically. I didn’t play it on hard sothat i found it a little too easy.

This kind of small release with good action, graphically well done and enjoyable gameplay is really my cup of tea 🙂

Thanks for making a 2.0 version

  5. Play It Now!
..(This) is exactly what you’d expect from a seasoned, veteran, map designer.

    Architecture/Environment
The level design is excellently balanced. Due to today’s modern hardware and the increased engine limitations of the Source engine it is so very easy to go overboard within the GoldSrc engine; this map modestly shows accurate and involved usage of multiple advanced techniques that would come from years of experience and is is exactly what you’d expect from a seasoned, veteran, map designer. The environments contain a perfect amount of visual storytelling and generously leads the player through each area exactly as intended while still maintaining a logical and realistic layout of this sector of the facility. The usage of texture manipulation is quite profound throughout the level, but under normal gameplay circumstances you’d hardly even notice it. This balanced level of detail rewards the exploration and slower paced play styles that some users may have gotten accustomed to throughout the years.

    Gameplay
Nothing really out of the ordinary for GoldSrc. Enemy placement was well thought out and simply enjoyable. Later towards the end, entertaining combat with Vortigaunt and Headcrab zombies was entirely unique, noteworthy, and ultimately assisted in changing the players pace for the next area. This area was also where I found out that the environment was semi-destructible to some degree when I had a Vortigaunt miss and hit a computer display on the wall behind me causing it to blow up! Puzzles were extremely simple and intuitive and pose no threat to simple minds and to slower play styles.

    In Conclusion
Despite it’s short length, I would still recommend other users to play through it. All in all its just another excellent addition to this wonderful repository of user generated content that’s continuing the longevity of the GoldSrc mapping community and is also just a fun, little, 5 minute experience.

    Play It Now!

I don’t remember the 1st version of this one quite well but overall this was a pretty great version, it was gratifying in combat terms because all enemies were very well placed, and the whole pace of the map was pretty nice.

Also, it feels like playing it in the hardest skill is perfect for this small neat map.

    So play it now!

  7. Play It Now!

I love this mod! Nice map design, simple puzzles and fun combats! I like the turret in the elevator.

  8. Play It Now!

Short and flawless great quality time waster.
Ending is something you don’t expect.

  9. Play It Now!

A nice short mod compacted with nicely placed enemies and good environemnts.
Definitely recommend it if you want a 15 minute classic Half-Life experience.

  10. Play It Now!

Combination of great visuals and well designed encounters always makes me feel something… magical… And this map is a fantastic example of this feeling.

  12. Play It Now!

Honestly, why NOT play it ?

Looks nice, intuitive level design, fun combat, and it’s super short. Just a charmer : )

  13. Play It Now!

This map only took me about 16 minute to beat. It’s short, but it has some of the best paced combat for Half-Life that I have played in a long while.

    Score Sheet

Usage of space and world brushes: 10/10
My score is easily 100% because I can easily forget this isn’t made by Valve. It felt so fluid and just…. perfect. I knew where to go even though this is my first time ever playing it.

    Visuals 10/10
I can’t be biased because I like half-life maps, and I can’t be biased because I have never seen or heard of this map before today, but the visuals were perfect. Not too dark or bright in areas. I felt like I was back at black mesa with the computers and sound design. If I ever wanted to map for Half-Life, I’d take a look at this map and see how they did it.

    Gameplay: 9/10
Even though I played on medium, I felt it was just the right amount of combat for me, maybe even a little too easy. I might go back and replay it on hard. I didn’t die once.

    Final Score: 29/30 – 96%

Please play it now. Just go do it. It’s not that hard and it’s a lot of fun.

  14. Play It Now!

Imroved remake for a couple of reasons:

    1: better lightning
2: classic Lambda Core style map.

    Play it!

  15. Play It Now!

I like this map a lot, I love how vibrant and colorful the room with the bridge is and I love the fights, especially, the fights with the human grunts.

    1. Oh crap I forgot to put down the 5 star “Play it now” lol.

  16. Play It Now!

this map is short and concise

To be honest, I played this map in multiplayer with my boyfriend in Sven-Coop and then I played it alone, honestly it’s the same experience but better in multiplayer

The map is incredibly designed and I love it, maybe a bit difficult because of several areas with turrets and enemies but still enjoyable

I would recommend this map to people starting with half-life mods/maps

  17. Play It Now!

The map is very short yet very compact. Great puzzels and amazing combat. You get very few weapons so use them ALL! The detail is fantastic, it felt like I had just played through a real valve made level.

  18. Play It Now!

This map is short, but very varied. I loved fighting against zombies, Vorts, marines and even an alien grunt in this compact environment. The only thing which annoyed me was the ladder-jumping place, but it’s literally nitpicking on my side. Besides: this map rewards tactical thinking, just as original hL1 does, which is great.
