RCDF Industrial Mission

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

13th July 2015

You need to destroy a Combine reactor.

Of course, they will do everything they can to stop you.

Use the AR2’s secondary fire.

Good Luck!

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE

I am unable to run this map. After the initial screen text, I appear in the map but then within 1 second the map crashes and dumps me back to the desktop.

I found it via GameBanana and wrote a comment about it not working and it seems that at least one other person couldn’t run it. However, from the comments it seems that some people have.

I have decided to post it here in case other people can play it.

PLEASE NOTE: If you can’t run it, please don’t add an AVOID IT! recommendation. I will contact the author again and link him here, so just say it crashes for you and maybe he can try to fix it.

  1. OK, there seems to be a work around. When the map starts open the console and type ai_disable, wait til the gameplay starts and then type ai_disable again which will toggle it back on.
There is another problem with this map however in that loading a save will cause ai to be permanently disabled for that instance (to turn it off again you’ll have to restart the map entirely). So basically you really don’t want to die in this one.

I don’t know if there are any crashes or bugs further on, I haven’t played that far yet.

  2. There’s also a version on ModDB, which worked fine for me…

    1. Do you have a link?

      1. No need. I have updated the post to have the same file as the ModDB one.

  3. Brian C

Didn’t work first attempt in Maptap, second time it did.

    1. I tried with and without MapTap and it crashed all times.

  4. Avoid It!

For me this was somewhere between an Avoid It and a Think Twice recommendation. This isn’t something that is painful to play but this feels very much like a first map. The layout is odd as the mapper seems to have made a hollow box and then just put a bunch of stuff in it without much thought to the layout, there are paths that lead nowhere and there’s a ladder that is part of the main path which is way too hard to find and enemies pretty much just scattered about. The most curious thing to me is that there seems to be an invisible wall between a group of combine preventing the player from shooting them. I don’t know why that is there and it made me feel a bit cheated.

  5. Okay, I have replaced the file with a working one, at least it works for me. I sued the one from ModDB.

You don’t get the text at the beginning and it starts with the Super Gravity Gun.

  6. Phillip says Maybe

I thought about giving this an AVOID IT! but it’s not that bad, at least for me. It took me ages to kill the three Combine soldiers opposite the door and it’s counter-intuitive that you can just shoot them.

I had to noclip up to the roadway as the ladder didn’t work for me.

All in all, it’s pretty frustrating to play but it’s not terrible. More like a mishmash of ideas and areas joined together.

  7. Think Twice

I wisely waited until there was a playable version of this available.

    I… unwisely played it.

Seriously this map is the most absolutely broken thing that’s still *visually* interesting, that I’ve seen in a long time. Entered and there was no text on screen, just a MASSIVE battle of npcs in the way and a siren / alarm that can’t be shut off. If the things I’m commenting on are the result of yet more bad AI or broken triggers, … that still tells me this map is little better than an Avoid It.

The presence of the Super grabbity gun was … confusing at best, all I wanted was a crowbar – plus if you have the sgg you don’t need other weapons, at least you shouldn’t. The one-hit Strider and Gunships were a bit confusing, especially considering there were ammunition boxes for the rocket launcher in several places.

Amid the extremely loud and very annoying first room combat, I finally was able to approach the door, and tried to get a turret stood up outside… yeah. Um. NPCs in the way. All of them. All of them eventually shooting at that ONE combine guy, who sat there taking turret and npc gun fire for the 10 minutes I explored the rest of the map with Noclip on (and… um, without no clip on, too, because .. jesus this map is broken). I finally saw the explosives above him, and… could do nothing that made any sense – I tried to shoot the barrels, thinking maybe they’d explode and do something, but they didn’t explode, since apparently they’re only a prop. I forget what triggered the platform to fall and finally kill that last dude.

Was the cafe supposed to do anything? Had a lady just sitting in the seat, like nothing at all was going on. Since no one spoke and there were no interactions with her, I just have to assume this is stellar broken behavior.

Not sure what was going on inside the warehouse thing, because there seemed to be … an animation going for a part without anything else – a tank? An object? No clue, but there was no interacting with it either.

Figured out how to use the elevator… by… holding down the E key? Why does it require holding, and not just clicking? Also: that rooftop makes no sense, since you can’t get off of it in a logical place to *escape*, and also, you can’t really take your allies *with you* anywhere that I could tell. Mine simply stopped following me, though it still had her counted as an ally. Also that roof above your starting point, there are plenty of ways to *not* be able to get back onto it. The Combine camera system in one side room appeared above its exterior roof, out of place, should have been covered by something else.

Didn’t even see the ladder to head up to the freeway, until after I’d flown up there and shot at things. The APC did…nothing, at all, drove a few feet and then stopped but didn’t fire on me, and didn’t seem to be able to be used by me either.

Where exactly was the ‘end’ of the map? No idea, since there was – like some number of other maps these last few weeks – no good direction to the flow showing anything to the player.

The upside of the map though, is that each portion seemed pretty interesting to look at. The lighting was good, annoying in places with that red light but still that’d be expected of a location with an alarm going off. Otherwise the lighting was ‘good enough to see’ but hardly realistic.

It was like a fractured location from a dream scape. Not sure whether you could go into a place, or had to go around, which would have been fixed by lighting or at least better flow.

So…. yeah all in all, the mapper needs a LOT of practice for a lot of reasons. The fighting was nonsense – particularly that one Combine who is only killable by falling debris that you can’t even really see due to the height and other nature of the map. (Hint: people do not look up in real life. The item was far too high up to be seen from the first room.)

I’m not normally against invisible walls keeping you from going places, but I *am* all for actually placing visible barriers where they’d make sense, as well as putting up some kind of backdrop that didn’t just look like you’re fighting on a glass plane above a blurry city.

  8. Think Twice

Well, if this is a first map, then I can say I forgive the mapper, but if it’s not, he/she needs to improve. A LOT.

First of all, the beginning of the map is way too intense and way too hard. It’s even more intense than Beach Party. The combat was really easy, since you had infinite everything, but I have a simple question; What’s the point of having guns with unlimited ammo when you give the player a Super Gravity-Gun? That weapon is much more overpowered. There were also a lot of useless things in this mod. First of all, the allies in the beginning do nothing. Second, there is a cafe, in which you find a woman sitting, but still, it servers no purpose. The best thing about this map is that it is very nice to look at and the buildings didn’t look completely terrible. For me, the map ended in the bridge with the APC.

Overall, I do not recommend this map. Even though it is visually interesting, the amount of useless things in it combined with the ridiculously easy combat and the non-existent ending just makes me hate the map even more.

  9. Avoid It!

I’m sorry but this isn’t good.. the map designs and ideas might be some cool ones here but the mapper needs to learn more first. Terrible map as it stands now .. Sorry

  10. Hec
    Avoid It!

This is the classic example of a way too ambitious project in the hands of a amateur developer.

In result we have a totally bland arena combat map style.

The goal of destroy the reactor feels realistic but game play skill was an absolute piece of cake almost an insult to an average common HL2 gamer.

Sorry it’s a big map, but also a big avoid it!
