One Man Army

for Half-Life

4th June 2017

“An operative for an unnamed infiltrate-and-assassinate corporation has to invade an enemy facility and cripple their production of missiles and other weaponry.”

Basic Details
Author’s Note

“I created a Half-Life mod as a exam project for my school, with the intent to publish it on the website. It’s the first time I’ve worked this long on a Goldsource game, and although it might be a little lacking, I’m still happy with the result.

The plot is pretty basic.

Oh, and there are a bunch of strange alien creatures running around in the wild. No real explanation for that :/”

  1. I’ve only just started to play this and as you can see from the screenshots, it’s a fairly basic mod. But I had fun in the first room with combat, so hopefully I’ll enjoy the rest.

I’ll post a proper review when I finish it.

  2. I need help! When I try to run it it just opens normal Half-Life, and if I try to open the maps it says that it can’t read OMA.wad… It hasn’t shown up in steam either after a restart.

    1. Sounds like you might have installed it incorrectly, Sockman. The OMA directory should go in your Half-Life directory.

      1. I installed it with gauge, and I checked and it is in the Half-Life directory, so that’s not the issue…

      2. Yes but there’s something wrong with using Gauge with this. I first used the download directly to Gauge option and it just brought up the normal HL game. Next I downloaded to my HD and used Install in Gauge. Same thing, it didn’t work (and both times the game didn’t show up in the Library. Did a manual install from the download and it worked fine.

        1. Wesp5

There is something wrong with the normal download too! I couldn’t get this to run on my old WON version of Half-Life until I replaced the provided client.dll with the one from the original Half-Life…

          1. I believe that’s because it’s not designed to work with a WON installation.

While the appearance of the maps was fairly basic, the majority of the game play is actually better than a lot of other mods that I have played. The opening sections feature no combat, and there is an awful amount of convenience to some parts. For example, the crowbar right next to a grate, where a little exploration could have used the available space better.

The combat in this mod is really quite challenging, mostly due to the lack of health kits available, and without confirming by checking the skill.cfg, I would swear the grunts were hitting harder than usual. Not only is it challenging, there are plenty of ways to approach it, be it a variety of ways to enter the combat areas, but also a nice variety of weapons to use.

One thing that does let the mod down overall, is the same issue that Azure Sheep had. There is an abundance of featureless, boxy corridor mazes and so much running around with nothing happening. Other than that, well worth a run through.

  4. I completely agree with Urby’s comments but rate it higher overall. Yes the early part of the map is way too boring and then there are the multiple same appearance corridors, however combat was very good and, rare in most maps, there are many alternative ways to approach the action areas, and also retreat for needed health in some spots. I also consider it superior to many acceptable maps I’ve played and especially note this is the author’s first extensive map in this format. I sure hope he produces more maps!

Edit: I notice my “Play It Now” image didn’t appear.

  5. Play It Later

Average difficulty gruntfest (I played it on hard.) About 1/3 of the mod is making your way into the facility while building up your arsenal, in which there are basically no enemies. Most of the maps are pretty basic but maps tend to have non-linear layouts, meaning you can approach each battle in different ways. T

    SPOILER (because CSS doesnt work)
I died once to the rocket tower when i didnt see what it was and walked outside like an idiot.
When I realized what it was it was too late. The last section is pretty cool when the soldiers spring an ambush for you and you have to deal with several waves of enemies. I didnt really follow the story because I could barely hear what my CO was saying but thats not too important.

Nice! New Hl1 mods are always a welcomed sight.

As others already pointed out the mod arrives only with very basic mapping and sometimes even boring texture choices but be that as it is.

Game play wise the mod knows to convince in form of solid placed enemies and path finding for them. A slight down turn of the mod is that you encounter only human grunts and a number of alien slaves (Something that doesn’t even fit at all story wise.) I think some well chosen re skins like dogs for houndeyes etc. might have helped the mod in that aspect regarding monster diversity.

One of the highlights of this mod is possibly the fact that it has nice voice acting. Every major story scene is fully voice acted and so are the grunts which use a handful of new communication chatter voices. That felt kinda refreshing and enhanced the mod a lot and if it wasn’t for that I would probably rate it lower.

With a play time of 20 to 40 minutes it’s also quite decent.
Mapping aside it’s a well made mod and I can gladly recommend playing it.

  7. Play It Later

This mod isn’t the best Half-Life mod, I would recommend to you to check other mod before playing this one! Combats are usual, the Level design is very basic, even for a Half-life mod, and I found it really hard. During your game, you’ll have the choice sometimes to choose between two ways. One will allow you to skip some battle part and will have no real point except finishing this mod really quick and without challenges, and the other path will lead you to the battle, the game, the challenges. Supplies are pretty rare, mainly for health.
For the story part: We are a soldier who is trying to enter a secret enemy base? I would have think places like this would have got more cameras and that kind of things, with lots of interesting and secret things… Apart from the ceiling turret, I didn’t see any camera, and apart from some computer, the missile launcher, and the big missile, we’ve just got big container…
And for the alien part, the author said:

Oh, and there are a bunch of strange alien creatures running around in the wild. No real explanation for that :/

  8. Maybe?

Mod starts without any NPC’s on sight, you crawl in wents, push some buttons, do some platforming, fight some turrets, after a while you see your first and only major enemies, grunts.

Grunt have changed textures, they look okay, at least different. They also have some decent voice acting.
There are radios you can listen and again it is well voiced.
Maps are sometimes gets boring with all the grass and rocks but indoor maps makes up for it.
The mod has a training area which is well done but for some reason crashes for me in the beginning sometimes.

It is an okay, sometimes hard gruntfest.

Ok, so this is a very linear and as you can see, a very boxy mod. The starting levels are plainly bland and very empty. The context is never really explained beyond the fact that you are in an “enemy base” that you have to suppress.

Then from the middle section of the mod, until the last levels, combat gets harder and more strategic. Which I liked it. Though the medium difficulty is indeed quite hard.

Eventually, you reach the end and you have to decide if you have mercy on the CEO of the base which has been bitch-teasing you all the time. Also, the end is very simple.

All in all, I guess this is an OK Play it Later.

  10. Avoid It!

I didn’t like it at all, I feel like it was not that well made and I didn’t even want to finish the mod
