You are driving across the coast to visit your family when suddenly your car starts to break down. You end up rolling right in front of a house before your car completely quits on you.
You have no cellphone so your only choice is to ask the inhabitants for some help. You open the giant, rusty gate and begin to walk up the path.
You are barely five feet in when the gate slams shut. Something doesn’t look right about this house…Welcome to the Nightmare House.
Be sure to play in the dark for added terror! The mappack is not too long so please take your time and investigate (there is a hidden Easter egg).
Be sure to play the map on the Hard difficulty as it is not too hard on Easy or Medium.

very scary map. made me jump out of my seat several times. kudos to the mapper!
great, great, great !!! scary and ambience map, many bonuses added, superb work – Hen – in my opinion is the best mappack on cathegory: “scary maps”
thx for sorting the link because this is one of the best maps I have played nice mapping
Thanks for this map, immersive/scary is how I’d describe it! A must play 🙂
Gameplay:
Very creepy with a lot of good moments and scenes which use default resources only and have been made very well. Each area has something interesting especially the end with a lot of moments that make you jump out of your skin if you’re least expecting it. Ammo and health balance is good and enough enemies to keep some action in the level.
Design:
Average design but the props have been used well but texturing isn’t very good but each room isn’t square and usually has a different shape to it. Lighting isn’t too good either and could do with some improvement but the overall structure of the map has been made well.
Conclusion:
Creepy level with some very good moments using default resources.
Rating:80%
this set rocked, I give it a 9 outa 10 (could have been a bit longer)
Loved it a lot! First time playing it: Freaked my head off. BUT IT WAS A FUN KIND OF SCARY! I hope who reads this comment PLAYS! Even knowing its a mappack, not a mod or anything, it was still awesome! Now theres just NH2 with a remake of this. But this still ROCKS!
Old but a great little map, Thanks to s.anchev for mentioning nightmare house 2 in the shout box, reminded me to replay this and go play NH2.
I found this genuinely a little scary. There are a few jump scares but it’s more subtle than that.
The house itself is weird enough to add to the overall feeling and the constant doors also adds to that feeling.
Combat was a little 1 dimensional, but within the limits of what the author has set out to do, it was effect.

I guess this is the core prelude for the classic survival horror mod NH2. in this map we don’t have any custom textures or anything like that.
The whole horror stuff is based on HL2 assets like the zombies and dark environments, I remember to had a jump scare at the end with that freakin stalker.
Overall this is fun to play, and if you find horror stuff for hl2 mandatory you should try this one.
Hard to believe that this is from the same person who later went on to make NH2 and contribute heavily to Underhell
The instructions for the installation of the maps are from Forgotten Valley.
Fixed, thanks.
Follow my journey as I go down the list of source mods at http://www.runthinkshootlive.com/hl2/
This is the 8th map on the list.
I will be skippping this one because Nightmare House 2 contains the entirety of this mod. But to be fair I will not be telling you to avoid it simply because it’s already in another mod
It was nice, but the “sequel/remake” is 1000 feet above this one in terms of quality!!!
Anyways, scary, intense, well-done…

While being very linear (the scope of what the Half-Life games are, anyways), Nightmare House feels pretty much like a rollercoaster ride. There’s little to nothing you can explore, although the author says something of an easter egg I still haven’t been able to find. Help me out there, whould ya?
While not looking like this at a first glance, there will be moments where you will find yourself dealing with way more zombies than you can handle, but it’s not necessarily a bad thing. The enemies/supplies ration is handled well enough. The most horrible type of zombie in Half-Life 2 (you know which) was clever-placed to the point of giving me a scare.
After all these adventures, you end up where you first started.
It’s a great map and while the fear-factor might be found mediocre by some of you, it’s definitely an ok map to play when craving for a little action.

Eccept the final scarejump, my pants were still clean, but the map was scary by itself and the zombies don’t do this map a normal map.
9/10 would fall in a hole again

Wow this was fun!! I also really do advice anyone to play this the once, really good fun. I liked the setting which is as linear as linear gets but it works. The part at the ladder and featuring a little ambush was great. Then again, it was great throughout and well balanced too, never OTT plus the weapons are spot-on perfect too. My only gripe… an odd one… but perhaps this mappack is better suited to something like Doom 3 rather than HL? But it’s great fun and very, very enjoyable. Something different and I loved it.
Honestly the classic horror map for Half-Life 2. It is pretty fun and for the first time can actually be pretty scary with the jump scares. I give Nightmare House a 8/10. I feel it is pretty good, I feel it overwhelms the player with too many enemies in some places, but for the most part I think it is a pretty solid Half-Life 2 horror map.

A very spooky mod that is for those who can conserve ammo wisely. It is recommended you play on Hard, which is fitting for this map. I didn’t really like the one part with all the zombies and headcrabs, that I had to retry a couple times to formulate a good strategy, but other than that, a nice mod reminiscent of some of the scariest moments in Ravenholm.

No, it’s not very scary these days. Duh, I don’t think that really needs to be stated.
But put it in perspective. This map is 15 years old. AT the time it came out, there were no horror maps for HL2 as good as this one. It was indeed scary as shit at the time. It was so good that it led to a high-quality sequel years later. So what Nightmare House is is less a scary map but more important part of modding history.
And even then, I’ll give it this, it still has an atmosphere. The darkness, the sounds, the environment, and the cramped claustrophobic corridors, it’s still quite strong even years later. Even if it’s not particularly scary, it’s still eerie.
So IMO, it’s still worth giving a shot.

Nightmare House is a great hl2 map. It isn’t too hard or confusing, and it is super fun to play. It also has some amazing effects using physics objects . 10/10

I loved the creepy atmosphere and the jump scares in this map. The sihlouettes really added to the tension, and the sound design was spot on. Well done, RTSL!
Nightmare House is one of the greatest classics in Half-Life 2 custom mods. It is also one of the earliest stages of horror maps and I remember playing this on Garry’s Mod. Now I can’t say and think much of this one for now, I’ll leave this a full review soon.
I absolutely loved the atmosphere in “Nightmare House”! The tension and unique storytelling kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The combination of horror and puzzle elements really made the experience stand out. Thanks for the great review!
