Office Commando

for Half-Life

30th June 2011

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

You are Gordon Freeman. You have accepted work from the mysterious G-Man. You thought he was interested in giving you work as a special agent, to go on secret missions and save the world! Instead, he assigns you to an office, to work through mounds of paperwork. After a few years of work, your office complex grows into a military base and scientific research facility. Great, you think, more government experiments. After weeks of no “accidents”, you put your mind at rest and start getting a lot more sleep on company time. Until, one day everything goes awry (of course) and the Xen aliens return. With the military again trying to kill all people in the know, you must escape Yellow Desert Research Base.

Known Bugs

“On the second map for some reason you have die for the level change to work. I have no idea why the hell it does this. I put in an autosave so don’t worry about starting from the beginning of the pak again. The autosave is at the beginning of the second map. Also, on some of the map changes you get stuck in the ground, (I know this is fixable, but, after trying so many times to fix it, I got tired of it.) but don’t worry, all you have to do is crouch and you will be free. “

    Maybe?

Fun, short mod with the difficulty ramping up (rather quickly, I felt) as it carries on.

Features some cool battle sequences between human grunts and aliens.
Definitely not one of the most original or best mods, but it’s good if you need a quick Half-Life fix.

Check the Story section of the office.txt for a quick laugh too.

Another old map pack, a hard one, too! It’s all about action. A little too dark in some places, enemies being teleported behind you, crabs jumping at your face, in other words, a little hard, but enough not to get frustrated. The jump in the first map, I think, was kinda impossible, so I walked on the edge of the map to get to the watch tower. Almost not enough ammo for the garg. The zombie room – not funny. Try it.

Yus. Hard ish. Some map change stuckness. Easy jump in first map 🙂
Don’t kill the Garg, run away!!.
Slightly non linear. Enjoyable, fast moving, often fatal. Definetly worth a go.

  4. Phillip says Maybe

The start was very worrying for me because it’s really not very good but thankfully it gets better. But not much. I actually think the basic layouts and ideas are worthy of more detailed mapping and design and I would probably have given it a higher recommendation.

The author mentions dying on the second map but I had no problems. I did get stuck on almost every level change but found that jumping just before the level changed solved the problem.

All in all it was quite fun to play but lacked polish.

BTW, images 15 and 20 were added for fun.

  5. First I have to say that I had lots of problems with mapchanges, I often was spawned too low during mapchange.

This mod is hard, only few armor shards and lots of grunts. At least there was enough scientists giving some health for you…

There was few nice rooms, but mapping wasnt anything special, empty boring places too often. And ending was boring.

  6. I couldn’t even get to play this properly; lots of fatal flaws such as getting stuck inside walls and freezes during map changes. Manually changing maps seemed to work though.
From what I played it seemed like a typical first map with terrible lighting and below average level design with some overscaling issues. Can’t give it a rating though due to the fact that I couldn’t play through it properly.

Gordon accepted G-Man’s offer and it turned out to be job in another facility. Few years later, he was sitting in his office, and then fell on the floor with the chair from unexpectedness – he heard gunshots, teleports and alien speech! The Black Mesa events repeated! He thought that they learnt from Black Mesa’s mistakes, but instead they had a baseless confidence that the same thing won’t happen with them…

The game starts when Gordon got up. We exit the room and go through boxy rooms and corridors filled with prefabs.

Then we will go through some diverse firefights which take place in boring, dull environments.

There are two scripted scenes! I didn’t expect those from such a poor quality mod. The last maps where we have to run past fighting monsters and grunts are fun. Their flaw is that the space is too big for the engine, so it cuts the far locations.

The author says in the readme that the playtest took a very long time. I can’t believe it because of the obvious bugs with changelevels.

This is another work which has nothing else besides the gameplay, and also another protracted mappack with quantity over quality. If the author was concentrated on creating one good map, the result would be better.

  8. Maybe?

Not as much fun to play, as the difficulty seems ridiculous in places and you get often get stuck when changing maps. Could have used some serious play testing.

So near but so far, this set of maps progresses in many ways as you make your way through the many Grunt and alien encounters, however, nowhere does it achieve any degree of exceptional gameplay, design or action. For sure the combat is very challenging, if not over the top at times with a few extreme zombie sequences, also I’m not convinced that the encounters were well balanced between enemy, weapons, ammo and health at times.

The major spoiling factor being those map level change glitches, these just ruined the flow and continuity for me. The author quotes in the readme file admitting the transition errors but apparently could not be bothered to fix the issue; I like wise can’t be bothered to give this set of maps a reasonable ranking.

This aside, we do have a case of all the sums not making a total, for all it’s content the mappack does not inspire or generate any fun feeling, to me it was just one big burdened effort to get to the end. You can’t help wondering after so much work and effort why the author could not be bothered to clean the mappack up, so releasing what could have been a more playable and error free game, maybe a case being over ambitious.

    Avoid It!

Ugh. I barely have anything positive to say about this set. Boxy boring architecture connecting totally nonsensical areas, with some poor lighting to boot. And it’s chock full of Half-Life prefabs. It’s certainly nothing to look at, and without any kind of story or realistic setting it was just a chore to play.

This one hit a big number of sore spots for me. It seemed like it kept pouring lemon juice on an open wound.
    – incessant repeating music
    – requiring you to fall and take damage in a couple spots
    – cheap spawning of a ton of enemies (zombie room)
    – level changes in the middle of combat

The only redeeming factor of this set is the combat. It’s full of enemies, and pretty tough as health is scarce. I found myself bumming health off most of the scientists I came across. And beware suspicious health chargers.

    Stay far away.

  11. Avoid It!

I really wanted to give this a higher rating because it was a fun and hard action map, but with so many game breaking glitches, it was just impossible.

This is a pretty tough map pack which gets better as you go along. It is pretty fun game play and even has a random health charger which spawns a massive amount of zombies for some unexplained reason, I actually liked this but that being said I love zombie slaughtering.

The obvious flaw is the game breaking glitch. At some transitions you get stuck in the floor and have to noclip to get out. I’m sorry but I feel that any map/mod that forces me to cheat to get past in a non obscure area isn’t worthy of anything but an “Avoid It”

The game play is worth playing, but the glitches were ridiculous.

    Play It Now!

Well I liked this, it was a cool piece of combat with a very unique mapping style, I mean very fluid indeed, I have some glitches in the change of maps like I suddenly stayed stranded, but u can solve that with noclip, and also was a jump that was pretty hard!!, jump from the rooftop to one ladder in order to open the lambda gate, but I used my friend and helpful noclip, and solved it, altough I know some people get very pissed off when they have to use cheats, but I preffer to see them as helping tools, and most of the times with low polish mods they come very handy, I could define this as an almost good polished mod good enough to play it ok!, this has some really clever interesting part where u get into some room to some healstation awaiting for u to use it and then BAM, lots of zombies get out some I think found that very annoying but I like to be surprised that way get’s u out of the healing time to the Killingzombies time!!!, also I liked how the author used the ichantozaurs in a really challenging way to pass that pool with both of them in it, also the ending got me thinking how many means of escape are available on BM???, possibly many, I mean like this, was cool, geting out in the Appache heli, also u can get out from there by train maybe, BM SUV’s, on foot, Military trucks, APC’s, Tanks, Combat jets, C-130 (please see Blamesa Fallback ending part), even bicycle, I mean, I love BM because all that matters is getta heck outta that madnes place at all costs!!!!!!!!!

  13. Avoid It!

This is another one I put down until I could be bothered to finish it!

The big problem with this is getting stuck at map changes, which I see is a problem others have had, sure you can noclip or use other means, but you shouldn’t have to. The problem completely destroyed the immersion in what might have (might have) been a good game. The game play might have been fun if it weren’t for the transitions. But when I got into the final tunnel leading outside (as can be seen in the final two screen-shots) you can see the mountains in the background and as you get closer to the Apache the walls close like curtains, WTF?

If it hadn’t have been for the bugs I might have rated this higher.

  14. Think Twice

Ugh..this title disappointed me totally, it sounded not bad first but even the very first maps were just bad. And even more.

    Pro’s:
    -Lot of action
    -A few scripts
    -Music

    Con’s:
-Basic, poor, pointless and mostly cubic leveldesign
-No real story, just odd – no puzzles at all
    -Bad balancing
    -Mean placed or spawning enemies
-Strange feeling at all time, meaning no fun
    -Short

  15. Think Twice

    Office Commando for Half-Life

    What did I just play…

The environment is bad. Everything is boxy, ugly and a pain to look at. Enemies unfairly respawn at some points, making this mod challenging, but not in the good, fair way.

I like the fact that there is music on the background, but it gets really repetitive hearing the same tunes over and over because you die.

Overall, play this if you’re really, REALLY bored. Newbies, please stay away. (no offense)

  16. Personal Favourite

To avoid technical problems. Just crouch and move. Because of this, this mod is nice. And it’s well build. Even Gargantua area is well built. You have just to descover the secret tunnel to avoid it.
I even destroyed that Gargantua on Easy. Just visit the roof top and you will see, that big blue monster not moving at all. Waiting you to go down to be able to eat you as a prey. But you are wiser don’t you. Toss all 10 grenades and blow him up or just hold those grenades for further ocassions.
Don’t have ammo, use Hive Ammo. They shoot you? Then cover. Do whatever it takes to be loyal to the cause.
