“Last Zombie is a third person adventure horror game taking place in the Half-Life 2 Universe. It tells the tragic tale of a man named Paul, who is haunted by the past and emotions he has forgotten about since the Combine took over.
Life outside City 17 is dangerous, but with the chemically altered water and the Suppression Field, and the bullying of the Civil Protection force life is soon without meaning.
Can Paul find what was lost to him? Can he find a way to be a human again? “

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SERIOUS SPOILERS.
So, to start off with, let me tell you that to interact with the NPCs you need to get very, very close to them. If you don’t you can kill them and then you have to go back to a previous save, which is pretty annoying.
The mod is in German, but don’t worry, only two different sentences are spoken and both by the same voice actor, which seems a bit silly, unless there is some deeper meaning I am missing.
You see a cutscene to start and wake up in your bathroom a zombie. You seem obsessed with somebody called Cassandra. Wander around you apartment block until you have spoken to two people, then the main doors will open and a Civil Protection officer will come in and in my case, walk right through me.
Eventually, you get outside and if you are lucky you will find her.
Keep following her until you see “Larsson” playing the guitar and then things take a cut. That will make sense if you play it.
Eventually, you are saved or worse.
Now, this mod was made in two weeks and that in itself is probably pretty cool but I have to wonder Why? I am at a loss to see the motivation behind the mod.
There’s very little interaction, no skill involved for the player and it’s not exactly an exercise in intuitive gaming.
Au Heppa will be interviewed soon by either me or Podcast17, so hopefully we will have some answers.
In truth, I really didn’t enjoy this mod, and that’s the main reason for wanting to speak with Au Heppa. There are way too many questions that need to be answered, and I expect good answers too.
There is little, if anything for me to recommend this mod to you. Play it if you enjoy the slightly more obscure offerings. There’s little doubt that if anybody else had made it, we might have been more impressed, but we have come to expect something more from Au Heppa and unfortunately, this doesn’t live up to it.
It’s fun and it’s short, and it is unique in its gameplay.
20 minutes, worth the try.
An amusing diversion, not the greatest mod but it is different enough to warrant a play!
I played this just before Phillip posted his review and I may of given this one a miss if I had read it first. But while the mod has no combat or killing enemies, it strangely enough was an interesting few minutes play, I can’t use the word fun for this one as I’m pretty sure being a Zombie is not fun.
In my review of Half-Quake Sunrise in December last year I mentioned
“In hindsight I’m surprised no-one entered a mono offering in Halloweenville?”
Well this is in mono and it actually suits the idea, in fact I don’t think being in colour would work as well. Also I don’t usually like third-person, but on thinking about it this is something that works, as you see all of the zombies movements.
For a mod that has no combat (and people actually talk to a zombie!!!), is in third person and no HUD I’m surprised I liked it. As the mod is short it’s worth playing just to see something different.
No, sorry – absolutely not. It’s not that it’s bad in the traditional sense of bad mods & maps, it’s just that it has nothing at all going for it. It’s like those terrible late night films, you have to keep watching because surely it has to get better? Well no, it doesn’t. Ok, so +1 for novel concept, -99 for general terribleness. Very much a missed opportunity to do something really interesting or fun with the idea. Pointless – Think Twice is probably too generous..
I have to agree with Sparks unfortunately. By no means terrible as I really liked the atmosphere but alas that’s not enough to make it into an unforgettable experience. To put it simple, I had no friggin” idea what was going on except that my character had an unfortunate run-in with a headcrab.
Interesting concept but terribly executed.
It’s a very interesting idea but it gets old really fast. I think given enough time they could have taken this in some pretty cool directions. Play it once for the experience – it won’t take too long!
I enjoyed it, nothing much more to it, but I can at least appreciate the coding that went into it. And the ending was pretty funny. About 15 minutes it’s definitely worth a try.
I’d really like to see this expanded upon though, like if you could detach from the zombie and crawl through vents as a headcrab. Could be very interesting.
Not a traditional mod by any stretch of the imagination, and it’s not bad… just repetitive and boring. Not knowing what is going on helped/hurt the mod.
When I played it, it felt like unfinished build of a mod. The story looked unfinished, because when zombie talks to people, this should be explained in story, but there’s no explanation. Every dialogue is the same, so they looked like placeholders on place of proper dialogues which are to be added.
The gameplay as a Zombie is realised well. It’s like playing as a monster in Fragging Free mod for Doom3, but unlike FF, there’s no action going on. You just walk around and talk to people.
Overall, if it was an unfinished build, I’d say “Looks promising, I’ll wait for full version, hope they will add some action there.” But if it’s not an unfinished build, then I don’t know what to say.
I think the concept worths the effort that’s it. and that’s why I could recommend it, I mean there are a pretty good zombie mod into HL1 universe you should try, I forgot what’s the name, so if your idea is to play and kill like a zombie and even to know how it’s like to be a headcrab then try that one because is fun, google it as zombie HL1 mod.
Back to this actual mod, i’m actually intrigued by the story who the hell is cassandra and why all the mod is earie and misterious I think the story itself catched me and I want to figure out more, I agree with bolx that going mono is a pretty subestimated horror resource in modding, maybe because is difficult, but to tell a sinister story feels just right.
Also I appreciate that modders build new worlds in the HL universe, I don’t know I know the CMB just kill zombies as they are parasites, but here is a different glitch maybe the Civ Protection units, could know him as the good poor bastard guy as a zombie, and that’s why they respect him in his missireble world or don’t harm him, who knows?? but I liked that apparently silly but hidden detail.
So anyway, is cool for me to wxplore different things in HL universe, and I ask myself again, if there are people modding this kind of storys in Hl modding then where are you guys???, anyone please release something about the 7hr war!!!, that would be higly appreciated at least by gamers as me.
Oh also, if anyone knoows german and knows the meaning of whatever that idiom in the interacting part is, please translate that to english what the heck is Ich bach is nichhh or whatever hell that line is said., on that i’d recommend subtitles or at least some english translation if the project keeps going further.
This is a weird but lovable kind of mod. Dark, often far too dark to see unless in a tomb! And I had all my brightness setting practically maxed out! The third-person view of our zombie, Paul, is a nice touch and much better than the first person view I have seen in another “agh I’m a zombie mod”!
Reflective mirrors in the bathrooms are a very welcome change from most mods non-reflective efforts and look great in the ” film noir” look of this one.
So what does our zombie do when he meets his former neighbours? Why he asks them if they speak German, in German! Not a slashed or dismembered limb or drop of blood spilt!
His zombie-amble reminded me so much of the film “The Elephant Man”, both in B&W I guess and was so slow. That GF always seems to be running!
Half Life in black and white is an odd sensation, but not as odd as an off duty, guitar playing Combine’s musical notes cutting me in two! So I crawl up to him to find out what his doing with my girl, but things get funky!
A “Short Stories” mod that is both short and has a story! But is strangely compelling in its own odd way.
A tea break mod that’s a bit of fun, so play it right now.
Dammit… this mod is annoying and it shouldn’t be!!!!
When the map first loads I went squee with delight! A grainy, black and white horror film look with 3rd person zombie view and creepy music. What’s not to like.
Then I left the room and began to wander…and wander…and wander… and nothing happened!
Once again, there’s a nice idea here but no game and the author has missed a great opportunity.
I beg beg beg the author to redesign the maps so that the aim of the game is to hunt down citizens and kill them. I want to stalk them and watch them cower in the corner of a dead end corridor as I approach and hack them to pieces…
then on to the next one!!!
Please!!!!
If I made a mod where you would have to stalk your enemies and hide behind corners it wouldn’t be a mod where you play as a zombie. It would something more like a HL1 assassin against Combine soldiers. Making it a mod where you attack people didn’t interest me. More over, I wanted to make a small mod quickly with no new content other than the music and my own farts into the microphone. What you describe would have required atleast new animations.
Last Zombie:
I am not sure why, so many people have disliked this modification for. Was it due to the lack of Action, Weapons or Explosions? This particular modification came off to me almost like an “art piece” one of those mods that is open up to interpretation.
There was a lot of different symbolism in Last Zombie as to what it would be like to live as a zombie, and be rejected by all those around you. The setup unfortunately didn’t tie the mod together since we had little to nothing to go on.
We are used to seeing people become transformed into headcrab zombies in the Half-Life Universe, but they never seem to act well behaved or maintain a consciousness. Very little is really explained to us about how a Headcrab takes control of one’s entire being, and in a way fusing with that person.
Similar to a parasite in that sense! I hope one day a modding team will create a mod that will provide more details of why things occur in the way that they have.
Very little is described in detail like Gordon’s HEV Suit, how was it made? Who paid to have it created? Who was Gordon before he became a Scientist? Was that all Black Mesa was hiding or was Black Mesa just 1 lab out of 10 others that are still unknown? I guess I am playing with fire when having questioning this missing links or gaps, but I do think it’s these kinds of questions that could fundamentally shed new light on to a better story, and better mods.
Nothing good to say.
