  1. Phillip says Play It!

It’s short but it’s good quality. There’s not much action but it was fun while it lasted. I have given it a Play It! as much for the action as for the general feel that it’s a really well made level.

My only complaint is the appearance of 3 army grunts in a area I had already cleared.

This would fit well into something larger and longer.

  2. Play It Now!

In this map we play as a scientist, who has to get to the bunker, because it is a safe place from bombardment. The story tells about some choice, but I found only one ending.

The design looks simple, but decent and various. We hear the working computers, air blowing, bombs” explosions – accompanied by earthquakes. It’s good that the door to the bunker is connected with door to guard’s room – no need to climb back to the ventilation if you want to return there. Speaking of ventilation, I understood how I was supposed to get there only when I completed the map, during the playthrough I just jumped there from the railing.

The battles are hard, especially if you open the wrong door.

The ending is too early, so I hadn’t enough time to enjoy the last outdoor location. Oh wait, I actually have – there’s no ending, it just temporarily fades to black.

Decent map. Nothing jaw-dropping, but since it’s short, this is not an argument against playing it right now.

  3. Maybe?

Way to short (around 5 miutes at a push) to be a play it now or later and another one that should have been part of a larger game (maybe some one can take all the better short maps in the 100 and combine them into one larger game?).

The layout is about right for such a short mod (in my opinion) although others with knowledge of mapping/modding will probably disagree. As for the three grunts in an area you’ve already cleared, maybe they came through the door behind them while you were otherwise distracted!

  4. Play It Later

So short, but nice one anyway.

With increasing intensity the pains in your head…

I don’t think it’s supposed to be here.

Okay so today we have a short beta map that, in terms of quality, can easily be a part of a good quality mappack. That is, the quality is pretty good. There’s also a bit of thought involved in order to be able to proceed. Overall, a pretty good map but prolly too short compared to the expected length of typical maps.

    1. Mmm, I just copied it straight from the readme.

Oh Riot in progress, definetly the MOST difficult mod ever made for HL1, therefore one of the most frustrating mods due to it’s mercyless gameplay.

      1. 2muchvideogames

Ya, RIP is freakin” hard. And hard to navigate too (maps are tortuously connected, I went thru about 10 levels just to get into the bank on the second map). I really need help completing Riot in Progress. Migandi posted a video walkthru that was far, far from finished. I’m currently stuck at the circular trainstation.

      2. Mel

Yep, bloody hard, I never finished it.

        1. I did. It wasn’t worth it. 😛 Oh, 2muchvideogames, do you still need help? I might be able to assist you.

    Play It Now!

Cool map, some good action but really short, i’d have liked to see more action in a form of a longer mod, because it really deserved it.

    Play It Later

A short encounter that was well designed in terms of layout and content, however, without longevity the map dead and whimpered out.

I enjoyed what there was, but disappointed with what was a meaningless mission, without any structured ending that left you wondering if you had downloaded the whole map.

I can’t imagine that this was the authors original intended ending, it came across like someone pulling the plug having found something better to do.

    Maybe?

A nice little map that shows some flashes of clever design and good gameplay. Unfortunately it’s only one map and it feels incomplete at that, with no real conclusion.

The combat is well integrated and requires some careful planning on the player’s part. There is some attention to detail here, and Ark fleshes out the feel of the map with vox announcements and effects to enhance the atmosphere.

It’s enjoyable but it feels more like a good movie trailer than a good movie.

  9. Play It Later

    Pros:
    Good mapping
    Decent puzzley-bits

    Cons:
Difficult fights if you aren’t prepared
Boring fights(Ex: You just sit and spam the Mp5 at the enemy till they die from across the parking-garage)
    Abrupt ending

Overall: Play it later. Not bad but nothing to rave over.

  10. Avoid It!

To be truly honest I didn’t actually like this map.

I’ve noticed that this map seems to have pretty positive reviews, but I for one thought it was pretty boring and pointless. The main fight was incredibly easy and wasn’t difficult in the slightest, the ladder puzzle was easy but could be done in different ways (that was a nice touch), the electricity and door buttons seemed to bugger up on my save, the next grunt fight was even easier then the first (an ARnade takes care of them) and the final section was also easy. It was also way too short.

The three talking points for me were the grunt fights, the ladder and the electricity and door buttons. The grunt fights were way too easy and could both be nade spammed to completion which wasn’t hard. The ladder puzzle was the only part of the mod I particularly liked because it could be done in two ways and I only realised the way that the author meant you to do it after I had done it my way. The buttons were my most hated part of the map and is the main reason I have gave such a poor review, because when I clicked them to open the door and shut down the electricity they would do one but not the other. I eventually got to the stage where I use kept bashing my use key hoping to finish it and it seemed to work.

I wasn’t sure whether to give this an “Avoid It!” or a “Think Twice” but I remembered the easiness of it and it influenced my decision. It is however much better than all the other “Avoid It!” reviews I have gave so far. If it was longer however it may have gotten a “Maybe?”.

  11. Play It Later

I was quite impressed with this map. Even though it was quite short, it contained good quality design.

What I was most impressed by was the ambience. The ground shakes with each bombing, the computers chirped and I could even hear radio announcements. The map really made me feel like I was there.

The areas were adequately detailed to feel very much like Black Mesa, with enough variance in environments to ensure that I didn’t get bored. There was also enough cover to avoid being shot up too much, which was good because there wasn’t much in the way of medkits until the end.

I also thought the secret area was an interesting touch, though I would have like to have seen some kind of hint that it existed because I found it purely by accident.

The combat was fairly standard but some of he enemies were placed in positions that required some tactics to get at them without taking too much damage.

I think this could have been great if it was part of something larger because the detail and ambience is there. As it is, it’s only good for a quick 5-10mins, though I would say it’s time well spent.

  12. Maybe?

This one was quite nice, actually, although the rating might not show it. The readme says this is a beta, but by this point I don’t think there will be any more released.

Okay, so the architecture is quite nice, I really thought the author did a good job on most of these rooms. Maybe not amazing, but well-designed corridors, a big warehouse-type area and an outside area at the end to boot. The lighting of the first few rooms stands out in particular, being this dark blue which ends up being very atmospheric. Another thing I liked was the fact that there are constant bombing quakes all over the map, which was a very cool effect. So if this map was a first release it doesn’t really show it.

Gameplay is basically your standard Half-Life fare, with mainly grunts. You know the drill, go through some rooms, shoot some grunts with the MP5, push a barrel under a ladder and push some buttons, pretty simple stuff. One thing to note is that the first few areas were… pretty challenging due to the number of grunts attacking, especially in the warehouse, so be aware of that. There are some headcrabs and vortigaunts as well, but not many of them in this map.

And that’s the major problem, the fact I said MAP. There’s only 1 map here and it’ll take you 10 minutes to finish maximum. With the relatively good design, it’s just a shame this couldnt’ve been longer. Oh well, if you want a release to breeze through quickly, give this one a shot. Just don’t expect it to take you very long.

  13. Play It Later

Quite good tiny map, but way too short (it said beta right) at least with some tough combats and nice lighting.

    Pro’s:
    -Good mapped
    -Challenging combat
    -A puzzle!
    -Nice lighting, realistic surroundings

    Con’s:
    -Ultrashort
    -Sudden end
    -Balance

  14. Maybe?

Another okay map. Not a lot to say here, it’s just a really short gruntfest, with a few enemies, and that’s it. Not anything original imo, but if you like some action, this is for you.
