Intolerable Threat

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

“Intolerable Threat is a single player map set originally made for Opposing Force. As Gordon Freeman, you must face down the Administrator for the last time.

The Administrator has taken control of “HANGAR 16” a government command and control facility in the desert. From here he is possibly planning a coup against the government of the United States, and vengeance against those who have opposed him in the past.

You need to meet with an agent who has the access codes to enter the heavily guarded base, infiltrate it and prepare the way for friendly forces to attack.

Background Story

“I’m still hazy on the details. Sometimes it seems like a dream, or a movie… Like it happened to someone else… I remember being transported to Xen to end the alien threat and save the human race. Xen. A damn bizarre world to say the least. After fighting one damn ugly freak after another, I found the creature. The Nihilanth. I’ve never seen any living thing anywhere near that size! And it was responsible… For the invasion anyway. The Administrator was responsible for the chaos, but I’ll get to him later. Where was I? Oh yes, the Nihilanth freak. I didn’t know if I could reason with it or talk to it, but that was soon decided when it attacked me… I responded in kind, and after an endless barrage, I split open his big fat melon head and watched the sucker die.

Green light, green light everywhere… And then he was there. The Administrator. The stiff bastard in the blue suit. I’ve seen him many times, but he always evaded me. Creepy, it was like he was watching me all along… I don’t know what his role in all of this was, but from what I’ve heard from my other scientist colleagues was that he knew about the possibility of a catastrophe, but did nothing to stop it. In fact, he may have even caused it… Not to mention it was his brilliant idea to send in the military to wipe everyone out, including us. Gratitude. At least he was grateful, at least somebody was grateful for what I had done. I honestly didn’t expect to make it back alive. God save my wife and newborn child back on Earth… Next thing I know, he’s got me on some train and he’s offering me a job.

I’ll tell you where you can stick your offer, you cold-blooded butcher! Tired as I was, I was still going to rip his head off… But I didn’t get the chance, I was teleported again, back to Xen. My God, not again… Alien Grunts. There must have been dozens of ’em… I think I saw those flying freaks as well. I was willing to fight. To ram my fists up against their armored hides until they killed me, or I couldn’t lift my fists anymore. Not that it would have done much good. The tough bastards that they are… A bright flash of light, and once again I’m teleported somewhere else. This time I remember seeing friendly faces. Scientist colleagues, even my old security guard friend Barney… They were smiling at me. I remember hitting the floor at that point. A couple of those hornet thingies must have hit me before I was beamed out of there. I layed on the floor and didn’t bother to get up. I was too weak. My friends rushed to help me and said something before I completely lost consciousness.

Now I’m in a sick bed telling this story to you… And one thing is echoing through my brain. Kill the Administrator. Kill that G-man butcher… I know I have to. For some reason I have to…”

Basic Details
  • Title: Intolerable Threat
  • File Name: hl1-sp-intolerable-threat.7z
  • Size : 46.1MB
  • Author: The IT Team (see readme.txt)
  • Date Released: 08 October 2002
Important Note

This mod was originally released for Opposing Force, but with recent update and issues running it under Steam, Unq was kind enough to create a Half-Life Steam version. This has increased the file size, but by allowing it to run under Half-Life we have made it available to more players. My thanks goes to him for his hard work and to the IT team, who I am sure would be happy with the change of game.

In addition, I used this mod under the new Half-Life format, i.e. the “common/half-life” folder and it worked perfectly.

I’ve been trying to add this mod to PP for a long time now. I tried all the instructions I could find but nothing worked. Fortunately, Unq managed to get it working and sent me the file – as always, my thanks goes to him.

Now, as Mikko Sandt said in his review over 11 years ago, The first problem with Intolerable Threat is that you’re supposed to be a Gordon Freeman – friend of scientists & security guards. But almost all of them are afraid of you and each security guard attacks you (well they’re working for the g-man but still). Also soldiers talk to you as their commander Shephard which is the main dude from Opp.Force. So here we face the difficulties of making a mod for Opp.Force. This is especially true since the mod now runs under Half-Life.

What we have here is a very ambitious mod and for the most part it does a very good job. But beware, the first few levels are not very good at all and it’;s only after you enter the main base that the quality improves.

I would advise forgetting the story, because as with most of these types of mods, it’s a bit silly. Do what you do best, and that is just kill almost everything that gets in your way and keep looking for the way forward.

I found it quite hard, especially at the beginning, but it drops down a bit from the middle onwards. That’s not a bad thing, but you could argue it should get harder as it goes along.

Most areas are very large and some have some complicated routes – which all add to the feeling of a large area base but it lacked any real WOW moments. You get the compliment of weapons, which to be honest, I don’t think you need. For example, you get the barnacle gun which I used once – just after getting it.

I have to admit to being pleased when it finished as I had the feeling of getting to the end, only to find more trouble around the corner. That would be my biggest complaint of this mod – the pacing. It’s too big to pace easily and the fact it was made by different mappers probably didn’t help.

It’s interesting to note that at the time people, or at least the IT team, thought the Gman was the administrator of Black Mesa.

I can understand why some people love this mod and you would think that I would too. It has all the elements I like: Military style areas, secret bases etc, but I feel it’s too “Lose”. I would remove about 1/3 of the mod, tighten up the rest and finish with a smaller but more polished version. Add one or two WOW moments and it would be one of my favourites.

That said, I have no hesitation in recommending it to you, but don’t worry about the first 3 levels – it really does get better.

I extract it on “common/half-life” but neither this version worked for me… too bad the mod look pretty good. 🙁

    1. What happens when you try to run it?

      1. andrew

same problem of megaman951 for me here… 🙁

        1. I have updated the file. It seems I uploaded the wrong one.

  3. doesn’t work for me either. the game starts loading (starting local game server…) and just stops.

loading maps manually does the same thing.

    1. Do you have the “/common/half-life” or “/steamapps/USERNAME/half-life” folder structure?

      1. I have a “common/half-life” structure.

          1. yeah they do. since they did that “common” update I did try a few mods and they all ran perfectly

            1. Please try the new file. It’s much smaller and should work now. Sorry for the inconvenience.

              1. The new file works perfectly! thanks!

  4. AI

Same thing here, installed to that new “common” HL tried to run the setup and got no KB settings, copied my HL config file, but still no luck!! Steam can sure mess things up 🙁

    1. There’s a new file for you to try. I’m pretty sure this one will work.

      1. AI

Thanks, works fine now!! BTW, was the other file for the WON version?? I kept it in case! Still have my original version installed (1998).

  5. I got the mod running by copying egon_effects.sc into the events folder of the mod.

As for the KB settings, I’ve seen this in some older mods prior to all of this years HL updates, I think configuring the KB settings manually from the config file in the mod folder could set things right. C is bound to crouch, I hate that D:

Also, I’m one of the few people who still have their half-life folder under their username rather then the common. I wonder why that is? :/

  6. Anon_732229

for the blank keyboard thing, goto it\gfx\shell and delete or rename “kb_act.lst”. that usually works for me

  7. I apologize for the trouble everybody had. I thought I had uploaded the correct file and it seems I hadn’t. I have now uploaded the correct file and everything should work correctly.

Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience caused.

    1. andrew

it seems to works good now! (at least for me) thank you!! 🙂

A good mod that provided a lot of fun in the last couple of years I must have played it numerous times. And while the first few maps may give an impression that this is a lesser quality mod things are getting better.

Game play wise it knows to convince. So have fun people and if you downloaded it before Phillip put up his fixed version download it again. It works now.

  9. Play It Now!

It’s a collaboration mission pack for Opposing Force, so there are some boring maps by average mappers, but overall quality is good, because there are also many decent maps by famous authors. So play it now, especially if you like an idea to make a revenge on nasty GMan 🙂 .

Hey I have a terrible fail trying to launch ALL my HL1 mods, it seems that due to a recent HL1 update many of my files got lost or they run erratic in the steam plataform, does any one have experienced theese fails or crashes too???

    1. I’m seeing the ‘limited movement with mouse” bug more often than not, i.e. movement apparently constrained to an imaginary box about 1/2 or 2/3 the size of the field of view. Quite a few mid game crashes, but they seem to launch ok for me, so it seems as if you’ve got a particularly nasty dose of Valvitus. Hope it clears up soon! If only we had some sort of protection against Gabe screwing with the files; but then that’s the joy of steam. Oh wait, there is no joy, silly me.

      1. Hec

so it seems as if you’ve got a particularly nasty dose of Valvitus

Yeah man, I think that is short, valve messed up my HL1 mods bad, even the controversial Cry Of Fear, is all in black when I tried it.

I hope Valve clean the mess, tough I could solve some mouse stranding problems with due to the config file at least.

In addition, I used this mod under the new Half-Life format, i.e. the “common/half-life” folder and it worked perfectly.

It doesn’t work for me at all sir.

In fact I had lots of headaches solving the mess up the steam update did on HL1 mods, I just couldn’t to get this work, do you offer any options??

When I try to launch a new game it doesn’t even charge any map!

    1. Hec

I’m just updating this, Well after, the crashes I had, I decided to delete the “it” files and download them again to try them with steam, and did work ok, now I can play it with non troubles yet.. I hope I can finish this mod propperly.

      Im glad it was solved.

  12. Play It Later

Lots of volume and very difficult. I had to take several breaks when playing this as it is quite long and somewhat repetitive. I like some of the custom touches like the turret voice, but overall there are too many turrets in too many places. It is very confusing about who are your allies and your enemies. It seems that the fat security guard and some of the marines are your friends, but who you are is quite confusing. Definitely worth playing but don’t expect a masterpiece

  13. 2muchvideogames

collaborative mod with several authors. Pretty long opposing force mod. Originally doesnt work on steam, so this is a nice addition to PP. Weird difficulty ramp, where the beginning is much harder.

I’ve been wanting to play this mod again for the longest time (can’t remember exactly when I first played it, but it was at least 10 years ago), and feel quite happy to have experienced it again. I believe this was one of the very first HL1 mods I played. It seemed shorter than I remember, but then again, it’s only the second time I’ve played this mod.

It worked pretty well; it crashed when I picked up a tripmine for the first time, but after that no more problems (strangely enough, I was able to pick up the tripmine successfully second time around).

I didn’t know this was a community project; that would explain the sudden drop in quality in some maps; like the ones a little over half-way through the mod. Much of the mod was nicely designed, but those maps were very blocky and amateur-looking (and I’m not sure what that area was supposed to be).

All in all, it was great to be able to play this mod again. Maybe it’s not as great as I remember, but it was still fun.

PS: I don’t know if you guys noticed, but the evil security guards (and for some reason Otis), when injured or dying, make the same exact sounds as the Cultists from Blood, and the evil grunts make the same sounds as the Fanatics from Blood II: The Chosen. I noticed the security guard sounds in my first playthrough, but just now noticed the grunt sounds. Very nostalgic!

It’s also funny to hear the evil grunts scream, and especially when they go “Arf!” (which they then sound like a dog)

  15. Needing a bit of help, search for a walkthrough but I can’t find one that is relevant to the area I’m in.

I can’t get beyond pic # 142 (after hiding and surviving version) and 143/144. 143 doesn’t look familiar. I go back from the original short underwater swim through a vent and the game crashes in the transistion. Going to other way there is an air pack that makes a noise near the dead orange suit on the bottom, but I have no idea if that is relevant or how to use it. The part of the wall in the main action area has blown out and I have gone in there, and there is nothing in there. I can’t get through the door up high that I did some time ago.

    Any ideas?

Can’t even seem to post any more, trying again.

    1. That “air pack” is the long jump module; the whooshing noise (from the blows-you-up-in-the-air Xen organism) is meant to signify the module being used, but ignore it as you can’t pick it up.

You need to use the magical vent. Why magical? Because the first time you enter that arena (pic 128, map it17) it doesn’t exist. Look down the first walkway beyond the two crates (pic 129). In this map the door that the Engineer blows up is in fact some orange machinery and the wall to the right of that is blank. However, having fought the first ichthyosaur & emerged into that arena for the second time (map it17b) that same section of map now contains the exploding door and behold, the magical vent has appeared on the wall (pic 141).

The “helpful” Invulnerable Engineer appears (just try killing him) & blows the door up plus himself + possibly you (pic 142). If you hid behind the crates & survived, walk along the gangway and climb the ladder – the magical vent obligingly explodes as you approach it. Run/jump off the gangway into that vent, killing the alien grunt lurking inside. Bust through the floor grate into the blue drop, through the transition (map it18), turn left and you’re at pic 143. Get ready for a bunch of “hilarious” gags, all at your expense, of course.

      1. Thanks Sparks 🙂 I’d been in there 2 or 3 times before and always missed that grate which naturally is in the shadows.

        1. Ah, my mistake – I misunderstood were you were, so obviously ignore 9/10 of that! Anyway, good luck.

  17. Play It Now!

With nothing else to play, finding this is like coming upon a lake in the middle of the desert when you are thirsty. Hours and hours of enjoyable gameplay! The negatives mentioned in other posts don’t bother me that much. So my rating is definitely a PIN. Edit: The PIN image would not load, got a 404 error page after posting.

Actually I have no idea how long this took to play as I did it in many short sessions.

  18. Personal Favourite

I finished this masterpiece a couple of days ago. I did report that it took me 8 hours to play, but that is over several days of on/off playing. I like to make the good ones last. Anyway, this was the most complete mod I’ve played in a long time. I had puzzles, alot of ammo and weapons and great combat. As a matter of fact, as far as availability of weapons, the author provided overkill. I think he used just about all of the games weapons in it’s catalog. I was able to defend myself against almost any enemy. The only weapons he left out was the crossbow and the egon I think.

I really like big mods but this one was amazing. Every time I think it was going to end, it just kept going. And speaking of large mods, I anyone has access to Library Of Leak Maps (beta) mod for Half-Life please let me know. I know Phillip said that the author had problems with publishing the mod but it has to be some where.

    1. I second that request, please – I’ve been looking for ages…

  19. Play It Now!

My first review on this site. Exciting! I’ve been frequenting here for a while now and decided to contribute. So here we go.

Challenging, but in a fun way. I’m always hungry for more Half-Life single player mods and this one was a pleasant surprise. It got immediate points from me for making use of Opposing Force content- especially Otis, my favorite NPC character ever. I stayed up until two in the morning after I first started playing it, and I just finished it this morning. Really sucked me in from the start.

Overall, I really loved the scope and scale of the mod, and how it kept surprising me with every corner I went around. There were some firefights that were really hard- even on easy, especially if you’d been chewed up in another fight beforehand. But that just forced you to think more tactically in how you cleared an area.

I only have a couple gripes about this mod. The new weapon sounds- while cool -annoyed me. I think they would have been better if they accompanied new weapon models, but they seemed mismatched with the original valve/gearbox weapons. It bugged me to the point I actually went and copy pasted the original sounds into the mod folder. Second, the ending was a bit of an anti-climax- but again, I was playing on easy; and I have seen more disappointing endings before (I’m looking at you Residual Life).

Long story short: play this mod. Good times to be had.

    Personal Favourite

Wow, I think I really liked this one! First, it was really enormous and full of battles and action all the way untill the end.

Then some maps were huge and they give you not too much time to contemplate the view, almost give no rest at all, you allways busy killing aliens or bad grunts.

The bad cops were really cool and the sounds for the Op4 weaponery were really nice. The story is simple, get to the gman and kill the bastard. Not too much to say in here. What I liked the most I guess it was the challenge you face in the combat, more than hectic puzzles the action is the word that define this mod.

Overall I recommend you to play this as is one of the most entretaining and full of combat mods for HL1, about the shortfalls, well I gues sometimes it was easy to get dissoriented a bit, and some textures were out of place, but really who craes? When you have action all the way untill the end.

Also, is hard to find mods where you actually can kill the Gman, this is one of those rare pieces where you can kill the misterious suitcase guy!

  21. Help! I have not seen this glitch anywhere in the comments. I can install it fine, open it up, but what I see on the screen is a small square of the game screen in the upper left, and the rest of the screen is black. I had to use my Task Manager to close the game. I am using Windows 7. What the heck is this?

    1. Do other Half-Life mods run correctly?

BTW, please only add the Meta Review Data when you have finished playing the mod and are adding a recommendation image at the same time – thanks.

    2. Sounds like a video mode or driver problem. Obviously, check your video drivers are up to date then try launching again, forcing a working video mode in the launch options.
      See here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1216-JMTZ-0860

When it’s in the broken “windowed” mode, does it still respond normally? Can you get the game menu/console up?

  22. Played on hard. Tough challenge with maps of wildly varying quality. Some maps also have broken sequences that I remember which are game stoppers.

    – An important engineer can get killed in crossfire before you ever reach him, permanently stopping your progress
    – if gman’s helicopter explodes outside the final yard, you loose

That said, the mod keeps you plenty health and fully loaded. I mainly stuck with using the mp5 (for two reasons, one is a cool replacement model I was using, two is that ammo for mp5 is doubled from dropped enemies in OP4) and it was fairly tough. I wouldnt normally recommend mp5 on hard for any reason other than grenades. I also liked the reskins and sounds lol. I was playing under the black moon concurrently with this and the difference in the difficulty was VERY noticeable. And both are fairly long. Good luck if you play this, but there arent that many OP4 mods to begin with so might as well play it!

  23. Ten Four Reviews

Intolerable Threat follows a story continuing from Half-Life’s alternate ending, but it’s really not much of a story, more of a premise. This premise is simple: pursue and kill the G-Man. Not much reason given, but what more reason do most Half-Life players need? He’s hated enough in the events that transpired during Half-Life and Opposing Force. When you do kill him at the end, though, it’s not very satisfactory, as there’s no fight-to-the-finish. A good ending as it is, but a duel would have added a lot to it.

Fortunately the events leading to the ending are chock full of classic Opposing Force goodness. There are some great set-pieces that are truly engaging, though some prove to be hard. You’ll be fighting Xen and Race X aliens, enemy Marines, and Black Ops in your mission to kill the G-Man. There’s a good mix of all these enemy types, but the Race X aliens (particularly the shock trooper) seem to be underused. It pays to press forward in combat, especially with friendly Marines by your side, but you won’t be fighting with a squad too often. Too bad, since more friendly Marines would have helped out immensely with some of the more difficult firefights. Good thing the skill levels scale well—Medium is recommended.

The maps are in force too, a diverse lot including all the familiar settings—offices, sci-labs, warehouses, rocky terrain. Original settings as well, but the areas that are completely original lack identity—it’s far from clear what the environment is supposed to be. Still, level design is a good effort, though not outstanding—many maps would have benefitted from a greater attention to detail, and too many areas are plainly textured and/or are too square. But there are special moments where good design is obvious and thankfully these moments abound. Lots of classy ideas, most of them cleverly pulled off, especially outside.

Although the unit isn’t a “partial conversion” per se, it does have a lot of new content. Most of the sound effects have been provided by (the sadistic) Silver Sorrow of Hangar 16—the new weapon effects are a lot beefier (thought the .357 Magnum already gave a good kickback?), and enemy Marines have cheesy one-liners straight from Blood II: The Chosen, like, “You will die a slow, slow death!” and “Come out, we won’t hurt you!” Other “lifeforms” also get new sounds. As for music, some tracks are pulled off the Opposing Force CD, but the custom music is where it’s at, and it’s well-done to boot.

Make no mistake, Intolerable Threat is the best Opposing Force unit in a long time (that’s counting the recent Nuclear Winter by Loki’s Missions), but its flaws are detrimental. Play it and see for yourself.

    Play It Now!

I like the custom voice of the enemies and the turrets. The voices are fun to listen so they make the combats more enjoyable. Fighting with the friendly soldiers is very fun, especially when watching the fighting between the friendly soldiers and the enemy soldiers. The visual of the map is very good.

I’m not sure whether using all the weapons in HL1 and Opposing Force is a good idea. (ex. Using only one of the revolver or the desert eagle is enough.) And in the middle of the mod, I got a little bit bored (because of the complex and repetitive areas), so I just stopped playing.

Despite those things, I think this is a very good mod.
