  1. I’m about 30 minutes into this and am not enjoying it. In general, I don’t like horror mods but that’s not why I am not enjoying this. It’s the fact that the “player” speaks. I hate that.

    It’s like a South American telenovella (Soap Opera) where the characters talk to themselves, simply to “tell” the story.

    Telling me a door is locked when I can see it’s locked it just too frustrating for me.

    I’ll try for a bit longer but sometimes I just have to accept that particular mods don’t interest or impress me, irrespective of what hundreds of thousands of other people think.

  2. I remember I tried this mod before the Steam Pipe update. I was about half hour into it too, when the Source SDK went through a broken update and I couldn´t keep playing. I think it´s a shame that so many mods like this -with extremely slow pace and scarce combat- spoil to themselves. The design, concept and story are probably good but the slenderman-like gameplay destroy them.

    Was this the name before the “wonderful Steam screw-up”?? This is the kind I enjoy! I’m on my 3rd play thru of Silent Hill – Homecoming for the third alt ending!

  4. It´s probably good for people that like games like Silent Hill. As for most of the HL2 audience, they may simply prefer straightforward action. All this being said, I´m gonna give it a second chance one of these days.

    I wouldn’t say I hated the mod, but I wouldn’t also say that I liked it, but I’m leaning towards a “Maybe”. I liked the art style of the mod, it sort of reminds me of games like “Alice: The Madness Returns” and Amnesia, and there were some things that were good, like Grey shaking his hands and at moments taking reloading a bit longer, giving a sense that Grey was also scared during the trip. However, the gameplay in the mod felt very unfair, and there was a lack of ammunition and health several times during my playthrough. Good concept and idea, but somewhat executed poorly.

  6. I’m going to be honest. The horror genre in general bores me to tears and it’s a terrible shame that a lot of the mods out there that get a lot of support and large teams are devoted to it.

    I had tried this mod a year or so ago but I just stopped playing it when I realised I hadn’t been scared at any point and was just wasting my free time away for no reason.

    well i love this,which is strange as i normally hate horror mods…however theres something about “grey” that i like … cant put my finger on it but its excellent
    when i started the game however i thought “here we go again” …. with continuous rooms and pitch black i was about to exit the mod,however im glad i never …. granted this can be tedious at parts but i fixed that by increasing the “brightness” in video options and this made the game a bit easier to play
    great game … but a limited audience !

    I ended Grey in December of 2012, and took me 4 hours of gameplay, so it’s a very long horror mod.

    I think this is a great mod for SOURCE engine because is very in the psycho-horror line like Cry of Fear, indeed it’s clear CoF put a big and heavy influence in the Grey Project, which could be a good or bad point of reference.

    Now, I think the CoF reference is important because, CoF set good story plots and really immersive environments and atmospheres, which we can obviously see here in Grey too, the locations for the development of the story are also very similar to CoF, a house, a subway station, a hospital, and lonely and freaking scary dark alley-streets, the monsters and delusions also are cool in Grey and remember me the ones in CoF.

    Now, the bad thing about Grey being heavy influenced by CoF and maybe the Afraid of monsters projects, is that all of these works want to emulate the superb-replayability of the mod itself! Which I think is just really freaked up: I mean, Grey gives you a really boring and low ending if you play it on “Normal” skill, and the cooler and entertaining-revealing ending if you try it on “Hardcore”skill; that’s just annoying, I mean i don’t even think in replay the whole mod in order to unblock silly features or get the cooler ending. I think is really stupid. Is stupid to relate the game play skill to the plot itself. and here I make my state clear, I am absolutely not a RE-PLAY GAMER!!

    Also the super confusing and hard ass-to kill boss is not even at the end of the mod. Is like in the middle of it! So that’s maybe the main reason for I would never replay this mod. I also think in the hardcore skill they put odd mini-challenges, along with different endings and collectible items in the mod. Now, I really don’t know why adding those silly features and more quite useless stuff would make a better mod… Because in my case I just see the revealing-alternative endings and the mini-challenges on YouTube, you know.

    Now the best part of grey is that is a horror classic for Source engine, for sure, this could be fitted perfect into the real horror story teller Source mod repertoire.

    Overall, and in conclusion this is a cool mod to have a good entertaining horror time, that’s for sure.

  9. Play It Now!

    What really deserves admiration is that the authors of this mod took extreme care with removing everything that would have “Half-Life 2” feel in it, making it a fresh experience, not something that builds itself on top of an existing game.

    New monsters’ design is entertaining, with well done screams that fit their look and the overall atmosphere. Their look and feel are different enough from zombies and headcrabs to make you believe in the novelty. The textures are also new, all of them come with very well done normalmaps, which enhances the realism. Few Half-Life 2 textures are used in the context that doesn’t make them reminding of this base game. There is, however, one problem – you often see things which look like Rorschach tests on the walls, if you look closely at the textures, you’ll see seams – for some reason tiling of these textures wasn’t implemented properly. Or you may perceive these Rorschach things as scary twists of reality to further immerse yourself in the atmosphere, and they are, indeed, quite creepy.

    New weaponry also gives a fresh feel, and I especially liked the bar with heavy piece of concrete attached to it – it’s very fun to smash a monster with it and kill him with this one strong hit.

    Programming looks a little neglected, not playtested enough: sometimes nothing happens when you try to take an item – Grey’s hand appears on the screen but item is still there. And when you load a quicksave, you see a loading screen from the next level, which may contain spoilers.

    The design is well done with layouts that are entangled but not too mazy. Locations are believable and realistic, and architecture is interesting. The shape of everything is diligently made to avoid boring flatness and rectangularity. If you’re in a corridor, it’s likely to be something more than a rectangular hollowed box: twists, turns and wall supports positioned around make it a better place. Environment is scary due to being dark and not very colorful, and ambient music enhances the feel. Lights take away small parts of the darkness, making remaining ones look even more threatening, the red lights from a truck look like eyes of big evil monster… Even if you’re in the well-lit place, some lights slightly change their brightness all the time, a little brighter-a little darker, some lights blink. This creates sense of panic.

    Story, however, doesn’t have fresh feel in it. Mysterious magical events caused by sins committed in the past, zombies, space that changes around you – these things reminded me of Silent Hill: Alchemilla and Cry of Fear mods I’ve played before, and I think if you play a lot of stuff in this genre you’ll be reminded of some other mods or games you completed. Still, it’s well-presented through excellent voice acting.

    After completing the main game, you’ll get an opportunity to experience one more hour of new locations and events by completing 9 challenge levels. All of them are very different and various, and thanks to them there’s more valuable usage of the new gameplay than what there otherwise would be. There is some annoyance, though, due to certain level of protraction included: if you’re out of luck during the end of a challenge, you’ll have to redo it from the start. What’s even more annoying – unskippable intro at the beginning of each challenge. Considering the fact that the player is forced to watch that intro many times, unskippability is, without question, a bad design decision.

    Thankfully, some challenges are easier than the others to break the stream of annoyance, and the whole challenge mode ends before it starts to feel like tedious work. Upon finishing this mode, a yellow pony appears on the screen for a short while, but I didn’t find anything new in the menus. Starting a new game revealed that the pony is an Easter egg weapon with which Grey beats himself up to death. A couple of times I tried to do it with an enemy close to me, enemy died and many stars of various colours appeared in the air, then dissolved.

    There’s also a hard mode which shouldn’t put you off even if you don’t like the idea. Developers take difficulty curve very seriously, so there won’t be any headaches such as harder puzzles or increase of damage you take when hurt. What you get are the same maps with few changes here and there, and more enemies. Due to experience of defending yourself you got from previous playthrough on normal, they won’t be a problem for you. There are enough health and ammo as long as you’re careful and use your arsenal wisely, spending the depletable supplies only when you absolutely have to.

    Hard mode also adds additional level which gives you a warm ending instead of normal mode’s sudden cliffhanger. A simple twist effectively explains all mysterious events. However, not everyone will appreciate this twist due to its simplicity.

    A bonus map gets unlocked if you collect 10 dolls hidden throughout the game – a task that I find too tedious. I only got 6 of them and I really don’t want to search every inch of each level because that would feel like work, not entertainment. And when it comes to work, I’d rather work on getting the level I’m currently creating closer to finished state. Thankfully, the player profile is stored in Grey/GreyConfig/firststartup.txt, where all dolls can be easily set as found, which is, without doubt, a merit of the mod. The bonus level itself consists of notes about the development, easter eggs, jump scares at well-picked moments (especially the one after you take the key: due to concentration on returning to the door I didn’t expect it) and some models that apparently didn’t make it into either version of the campaign or bonus maps, because I don’t remember seeing them there.

    Grey doesn’t look like a mod, it looks like a new game, and its quality is high, especially for a free product.

  10. Been trying for 2 hours, unsuccessfully, to launch the mod.
    I have the latest 1.6gb version installed in sourcemods: “Greyv110SteamPipeFix.zip”;
    This update is up to date and includes a steampipe fix.
    The game freezes before main menu.
    But the console says this: http://i.imgur.com/SJblk0G.jpg
    Can’t type anything, game frozen.
    I noticed, in gameinfo, there is a line that reads:
    “Game C:\szarok\”
    This seems to be from the developer…. How can this be right for everyone???
    I have of course, no such directory.
    Do any of YOU have this line in gameinfo.txt as well?
    How can the latest release (2015) still have this problem? I have over 150+ mods that *ALL* launch properly. I have all SDK (incl.2013) up to date, and HL2 and EP2 all up to date as well, and recently launched successfully.
    Others have been stuck at the main menu as well.
    Any help launching this?

I always love horror mods and games and ı always will be.This mod is my favourite horror mod after Nightmare House series.But its ridiculously hard no words on that ı think everyone accepted that, other than that ı had fun playing it ı loved the story behind it.If you like horror mods and games go paly it now.

    Well, I am in strong need of revisiting my original Grey’s review ten years after I wrote the first one.

    This is because recently I found out the author of this now Half-Life modding horror classic, and his team, the “depresick” team, recently released their first fully commercial horror game on Steam called “Remorse: The List”. Once I found out about that on Mod DB I immediately felt the need to play the Grey Universe again, and I call it universe precisely because the full story of Grey mod, starts out with the Mistake HL1 mod and the also HL1 “Mistake minus one” mod.

    You know, so far everyone recognizes Andreas Rönnberg AKA Rumpel as the definitive Half-Life horror modding master of all times. That is because his whole work was outstanding and in crescendo from the first editions of AoM until the utter perfection, “Cry of Fear” was. And everything that he achieved in the Gold Source engine, which I think is even more outstanding, as CoF just takes the Gold Source engine to the limits of its peak performance. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t want to compare the Grey Author to the AoM and CoF author. But the mention I think it is mandatory because all of these works are the absolute classic HL1 modding horrors works you must play in order to understand the high relevance of the horror genre in the modding scene of the Half-Life community.

    Now, retaking the point about the Grey mod itself, I think with the Depresick Mod something similar to AoM to CoF evolution happens, but on a different engine. Let me explain, Grey represents a great horror universe along with their predecessors which are the HL1 “Mistake” mods. I was one of those who underestimated the Grey Mod at first, and only by replaying it, did I grasp its utter relevance to the horror genre in the modding scene.

    You know the whole Grey Universe is a whole concept as a horror story that first it is not clear if you play the Mistake releases but then is masterfully achieved in this Grey release. I would even say, Grey, hooked me into its whole horror universe, even better than the AoM and the CoF masterpieces. So now I found out a new horror game from the Grey author is released this excitement gets even bigger. Because I believe continuing a mod, a universe and a concept is a major achievement only a few developers took the challenge to be done. Also, few of them are willing to cope with the frustration and hindrances of actually building a whole new game in a different engine.

    So overall I think if You like the horror genre in the Half-Life modding scene, then you must try Grey. Because is possibly the only mod that opens up a whole horror universe on its own. Once you try Mistake and Mistake -1, and then Grey, You will be soaked inside a pretty cool universe of horror that will keep you hooked with questions that will encourage you to play and replay this whole universe many times. And despite I am not a big fan of replaying games, I guess once you find a worthy universe to explore it is definitely worthy.

    So I am glad for this author. I am glad he managed to evolve and pursue his aging design goals. I insist. Only after replaying Grey, ten years later, I released that it was, and by far, a bigger universe that once I short-sighted saw the first time I played it. So well play it. And I can only say, god bless these horror projects in The HL modding community, as AoM inspired many ones, and I hope the Grey universe also serves as a source of inspiration for future HL1 modding horror developers.
