Collision

for Half-Life 2

5th June 2015

Gordon Freeman crashes his car on the way to a presentation at his alma mater.

Will he be able to escape Combine pursuers?

The answer is “of course”” but play the map anyway.

Author’s Note

“I used this map to teach myself Hammer so it isn’t as pretty as I’d it to be, but I spent several tweaking the gameplay and optimizing the map. The result is a fun and short “coffee-break” map that’s a blend of zombie bashing and furious shooting action.”

It’s a good map with some claustrophobic set-pieces and well worth playing — even if I couldn’t figure how to get past the sniper in the underground section.

  2. Mike

Yes, sorry about that. I realised after I posted that I must have downloaded it from elsewhere.

And if anybody figures how to get past the sniper in this “Collision” map, I’d like to know about it!

  3. You get past the sniper by making one continous run down the slope, every time the blue beam falls across you hit sprint until you hear the gunshot, then let go again as the sniper will adjust his shot to the speed you are moving so if you sprint the whole way he still hits you.

  4. Mike

Thanks for the advice liddl3monk3y, but I must have missed something major. I’ll have to reload this map and play it again, As I remember, the sniper was shooting at me while I was in a dead-end alley way with wire mesh sides. I got to the end of the alley but… what then? Was I missing a gate or something?

  5. This time Gordon made a crash with his car after a brief escape plenty of action, he need to get out from the mess by a sewer with the hoovercraft. The mission is nicely put together with here and there some good idea or fact you gonna encountered. It gives a average challenge in a correctly done architecture ( always a little bit to blocked by stones or wall with no real bugs exept the foggy environment texture “far away’) . Worth the download, even if it’s only the first part and so incomplete

  6. The guy with the crowbar

Wow, I really liked this mod. For me, there was no lag, which is a thumbs up. Second, the level design was really good. I like how there are some elements of suprise in the level, with unique problems to be solved. Finally, the weapons are placed appropriatly through-out the level, giving a hint as what might happen next. So basically it’s this:

Fun Level: 4.5/5; The fights were quite fun, the exploring interesting, but near the end of the level, there was a certain sniper who was kind of annoying.

Level layout: 5/5; I thought that the house was really cool, the sewers had nice water effects, and what some enemies did were cool, and some suprising. (Ex: Hiding behind crates, burrowing under the ground, and popping out behind a corner, up the stairs, ect.) Also, I never felt tense while playing, which was very good.

Originality: 5/5; Really liked how they did the whole “your crashed and stranded” kind of thing. Plus some cool puzzle solving that I haven’t seen before.

    … Which totals out to be… a 4.83! (A repeating 3 that is!) Or, a 5.

what a great little mod.a nice break during lunch or a nite cap. would like to see more its fun, fast and clever.

  8. hl2gamer

I am stuck at the very start. I took the underwater tunnel and reach the house but dont know what to do next. I killed the zombie and have a crowbar and pistol.

How do I get into the house? I see a rope holding up a huge bolder over what seems to be a storm door but I shot the rope, hit it with the crowbar – nothing. What am I missing?

  9. The guy with the crowbar

Wow, my earlier review sounded so cheesy. But that was back when I was 11, do don’t blame me. Still, a great level.

    Play It Now!

It has a rather slow and slightly unfinished-feeling start, but once you get to the point in the house where you have to use a switch to open a gate then it really develops well. The combat is hard but always fair, and the last section in an old mine tunnel is really well done. The “dodge the sniper” bit is particularly good.

  12. 2muchvideogames

sniper killed me like, 20 times. There’s barely any cover (explosive barrels are NOT helping)

  13. Play It Now!

this is worth the play, last sniper is a bit tough but definitely doable.

  14. Personal Favourite

It may just be my love of Ravenholm but this is my favourite vanilla HL2 map I’ve reviewed so far. There’s only two flaws and I’ll get those out of the way first. First, there’s a few invisible walls, specifically at the start of the map. Second, no matter how many times I tried, I couldn’t get past the sniper at the end without losing seven eighths of my health. Otherwise, this is an amazing Ravenholm style level. There’s three segments.

First is the spooky house. It reminds me of the original Nightmare House (I’ll review that in October). It’s pretty creepy for vanilla HL2. There’s even some puzzles. They’re easy, but at least the author added puzzles. Another awesome part is that unlike some HL2 horror maps it’s not very dark.

Second is the combine raid. I really like this part as well. It’s really interesting seeing the previously zombie-infested spooky house now filled with Combine. The enemy placement is very good. I had exactly enough ammo and health as I needed, no less and no more. It’s very fun. There’s also a battle with a Hunter-Chopper and the layout is very good for this since there’s shelters to hide in and wide open spaces to shoot in. This is my favourite part of the map. It’s Combine Ravenholm at its best.

Lastly is the mines. They’re not bad but not great. It’s just a linear romp through a few zombies and a single Shotgunner ambush. As I said in the beginning, the sniper is really hard to dodge. Much like Station 51 there’s an airboat but you only get to use it for about 15 seconds before the map ends.

I definitely recommend this map. There’s something for both people who like zombie fights and Combine fights and is perfect for people who like both like me. I love it.

  15. Phillip says Play It!

I was pleasantly surprised by this little map. It’s rough around the edges but has enough going on to keep me interested.

The sniper section was a challenge and his placement was nicely done.

The beginning will leave you a little underwhelmed but I feel it’s worth playing to the end.

All in all, a fun “coffee break” map.

  16. Play It Now!

This was a very good map. While parts of it did seem somewhat blocky and ‘stiff’ looking, for the most part it seemed expertly designed.

Even the starting point, that was visually impressive with layer upon layer of ‘but why can’t I go there! darn!’ – I don’t mind it when invisible walls are placed in spots like this, though it also makes me want to have more ‘behind me’. What was through that tunnel? What’s over those hills? Really nice.

The house fight was interesting, but I wound up loading from a save and effectively running away from the whole thing. The house itself seemed… weird? Mostly good room design but then not sure what the power switch room was supposed to be originally. Loved the TV, though the glow from it was a bit overwhelming and made it difficult to see my Gman 🙂

Not a bad small outdoors venue for the helicopter fight, and the foot soldiers were also pretty well placed. Then you get into the tunnel area and wow THAT was nicely done. It felt claustrophobic and carved, and the sniper at the end of the tunnel was challenging as well.

I completely missed the airboat on my first pass under the sniper, but then I realized I was never going to be able to cross that gap, must have missed something – oh there it is!

All in all, a short but remarkably well done map.

  17. Play It Now!

A very nice little map with some cool touches. The house puzzle was interesting to solve, and the enemy placement inside seemed about right. The helicopter battle and method to get to the next area was well done. I especially liked being able to go back and get as much RPG ammo as I wanted to clear the area with the dropship. The sniper area in the tunnel was really quite hard; I solved it by running, hiding, and then jumping into the water. I made my way to safety underwater and then went backwards to lob a few grenades. The airboat jump was a great ending to the map as well. I wish the author hadn’t put so many invisible walls in the beginning of the map, but overall it was really enjoyable.

Fun to play, No Problems under Linux.

    Play It Now!

This was one of those that I Haven’t had the chance to play. And I have to say I like it.

Overall the map layout was great just to be one single map, combat was plain at first with boring zombies, but in a good eerie scenario, and the final combat against the CMB and the escape were pretty nice.

Overall a good entertaining map i recommend to play, I hope to see more cool works for this author.

  20. Play It Now!

I have to say, this was my first experienced custom map from this site, and man! it had a fitting-ravenholm atmosphere with the soundtracks playing at an oppurtune moment! i had a blast spenting 30 minutes playing it and i liked the way the area was organized with dynamic puzzling parts giving that special Half-life feel.
Even if the map was small but it was a well spent 30 minutes, go try it for yourself you’ll like it!

    1. It’s pretty cool that it still works ten years after release.

      1. Yeah that’s really impressive

  21. Play It Now!

The area where you plug the power to the main gate needs to be rethinked a bit. On the way there the player needs to kill a considerable amount of zombies (this counts even more if he’s looking for resources in every nook and cranny). By the time the Combine soldiers storm in he’s quite low on ammo and would have probably used the medkit (50/50 on this, just my experience).

A good thing was that I managed to speed through and that the numbers were not exaggerated.

The dropship fight was pretty fun and I consider this to be one of the better maps for Half-Life 2. As always, the map was not frustrating and offered rewards for the careful players.

  22. Play It Now!

Wow, I’m like DAMN THIS MAP IS GREAT. Becouse IT IS!
Zombie fights, scarejumps (not really, but some sensible people could get scared by it), combine fights, trolls and secrets! To don’t forget the chopper fight! Finally someone puts a chopper and not a gunship.
9/10! Would get trolled by a shotgunner again

  23. Play It Now!

At first, this map felt (to me) rather crude and pretty amateur or perhaps just somebody new to mapping… I dunno, but it didn’t seem to have the spit and polish I’ve seen from other HL2 maps.

Boy, appearances can be so deceiving!!

Collision is now one of my favourite maps!! I really enjoyed it from start to end. The house scene was great if a little cheap n cheerful in design with little visual glam but at least it wasn’t stupidly pitch black like other maps can be. Then, later the combine where here attacking me here. Awesome stuff!!! And it always felt balanced and never stupidly OTT. Awesome stuff.

Later with the choppa / gunship was brilliantly done. Taking it out with the rockets was just right and the support troops got to experience a little of my Rocket Pie also. Fun!!! The caves felt far too short and I was SO GLAD this didn’t turn into an Antlion fest with constant spawning. That would have spoiled it for me. The sniper was tricky, and took most of my health, but he also got a rocket in the face once I got a steady sight from behind a rock.

The end jump was superb – I did not want this map to end!!!

  24. *sniff* Way better than my skills with hammer.

  26. Play It Now!

This mod is very good at what it sets out to do: being a short and fun mod that has a lot of shooting. And yes, A LOT of shooting. Ammo is everywhere, even if you miss more than half of your shots it will not be a problem whatsoever.
The environment is not fantastic-looking, but it is excusable.
If this review seems a bit simple, that’s because the mod is also very simple. There just isn’t much to talk about. Just go play it!

  27. Play It Now!

One of the best old map, simple(like press and hold W and U will beat the map XD) and looking very good, definitely worth to play

btw moment with sniper is still hard to pass for me))

  28. Play It Now!

Short and fun mod! Nice map design and fun combats.

P.S. I didn’t notice that I should shoot the wall after killing the attack helicopter, so I searched the walkthrough for that part.

  29. Play It Later

It’s really good. Not sure why but… not great. Really really good.
