Caves

for Half-Life 2

24th September 2013

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

In this short map, you have to work your way through a variety of caves until you Meet Barney.

He seems to be held captive. Once released, he is supposed to open a door that you hope leads to freedom.

However, things don’t work out as expected. Good Luck.

About

Author’s Note:
“Caves is the second map i have made for the Source engine. My first being zombies. I feel that this being my second map, it is of a much higher quality then my first. As the first was created when I had just started mapping. So the whole design of it was a little shaky. Feel free to submit any bugs to me (Email found in the readme). But keep in mind that this is not a beta. However, I will release Caves V2 if i find enough bugs to resubmit it. If someone wants the .vmf file to check out how I did something, just e-mail me and I will send it to you. I hope everyone enjoys my new map.”

Quite fun. Some AI glitches and texture issues here and there – but a solid idea and a clear indication that Gamefreak is developing his skills. Too short. And now I’m off to play Combine Destiny…

  2. to simple to be really funny or I missed something after picture 4 where barney never help me open the door…A map with really squared rooms, simple texture and a forward progression. Author tried to build several interesting stuffs but totally out of context and nonsense, and finally there is a door I can’t open …

    Play It Later

Short little map. No goal or story, just make it to the end credits. To much weapons to have any trouble with the fighting. Clear linear progression. Not bad, but a little easy. Map is faultless and looks good. Strange ending, with a mounted gun, shooting a lot of troopers.

  4. Phillip says Avoid It!

I found this file in my “To Play” folder and was looking for a quick map ot update the site with. It was only after I played it and started to post it that I found out I had already added this to the site years ago.

I decided to simply update the post and put it on the front page. Sorry if you were led to believe this was a new release.

Anyway, the map itself is really not worth your time and whilst it might be an improvement on the author’s previous release it really isn’t very good.

Nothing makes sense and there is little or no fun.

I had to no-clip past the last door as Barney wouldn’t move or say anything.

Unless you HAVE to play everything posted on the site, I highly recommend you avoid this.

    Maybe?

So, it was you, Phillip! I have you to thank for this old release! Curses for not reading other reviews first! 🙂

Not a whole lot going on in this short little map. It clearly has that “my first map” kind of feel to it, with a lot of boxy rooms, weird little set-pieces that aren’t connected to anything, and combat that basically amounts to opening doors and shooting all the Combine that were standing around waiting for you. Also, the last door doesn’t open, but custom choreography has always been a troublesome thing.

But, you know, we’ve got a train. We’ve got an elevator. A mounted gun scenario. A camera scene. These are the parts to make something better and maybe the level was just a testbed for the author to understand them. Not an awful map, but not really worth playing either.

Incidentally, if you’re prone to epilepsy, avoid this one. There’s a room with a really horrible strobe effect that even made me feel kind of uneasy.

Is this suitable for MAP TAP setup????????

    Think Twice

This is really bad!!!, just a sequence of narrow blocky maps all dark and with close static combat, I’d say even some HL1 arena style maps are millions better than this.

I know it was the work of some beginner mapper, but I guess his technical mapping abilities were not just right enough.

Barney there, was a fiasco a totally messed up trigger or something like that.

Anyway play it if you don’t have not a thing else to do!

I guess I place a TT instead of a terrible Avoid it because at least you have some CMB guys and 2 miserable zombies to shoot down…

  8. I have been mapping for about 5 years and only released 2 maps, for 2 competitions. I didn’t want to release a map like this, I wanted to develop and perfect my own style of mapping before I release anything. I am currently working on a mod, but that’s hush hush for now.

    1. Hec

Oh don’t worry, look away, is natural that being your first map is not polished at a perfection level and that is just natural.

I guess if you’re mapping for 5 years now, your skills have improved surely, so is always good to have new mappers to deliver they work especially in this HL1-2 map and mods super scarce times, I hope to play and enjoy your upcoming mods soon! 🙂

  9. Avoid It!

An old awful map. Ugly mapping, one texture on all map, very strange ending. Have some scripts and train. Only thing good with it – REALLY old, but it’s too bad excuse.

  10. Avoid It!

Caves… caves…? More like “Rooms (with stone textures)”. The map is bad, really bad…

I know it’s hard work creating a landscape around the player, but these are just rooms, connected together with doors… There is nothing appealing about the leveldesign and yeah, the caves look awful and are really, really square.

The gameplay is awful as well. Wherever you go combine forces starts shooting at you before you can even enter the room. Let the player enter the room first! Add some scripting to the AI! Besides that there is a room which you can progress through, and even if you do, you enter a room full of invincible enemies… It’s awful…

    Just don’t play it!

  11. Maybe?

Why did I say Maybe? Well, there are some positives.
    – Some cool scripted stuff
    – One fun part IMO when you go through the grate and save Barney
    – Alright voice acting for Barney, even though he only has like 2 lines
Other than that, it’s not very good. The level design is atrocious. It’s a linear slaughterfest with boxy architecture. It doesn’t even look like caves, it looks more like someone’s dog dug a huge complex into the dirt of their backyard. There’s only two types of enemies you actually get to fight, one of which only appears twice in the same room. So yeah, I wouldn’t recommend this map, but I applaud the effort. It kind of reminds me of the mod for Cry of Fear called “The Hole” except not actually good.

  12. Maybe?

Meh… I know this is an old map and a beginner did this, but it’s still not that good, unfortunately.

The textures were really bad. It’s only one to be honest. Just some stone covering the wall and the ceiling, makes me puke.

The level design is… mediocre. It’s feels more like a Half-Life 1 grundfest map, but with two zombies, a mounted gun scene and a fancy cart. (sort of)

Also, since the SteamPipe update happened, I can’t find a “scenes” folder, so Barney did nothing to me. I had to noclip through the door, which I really hate doing.

I would originally rate this much lower, but I decided to give this map a Maybe.

  13. OK, so it’s a questionable map, but hey…it IS a little fun to play. The painful part was getting it to run in the first place. Obviously, it will NOT run on App 220, so gear it up for App 215 and FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS so that Barney does indeed talk to you and then opens the door so you can complete this really short mission. if you do not follow the install notes, Barney just stands there…mission is over.

If you would like a copy of the GameInfo.txt file gimme a PM.

  14. Maybe?

Like caves… those are rooms! The ambientations could maybe be better by changing the caves with a combine base! The spawning points are “ok” and the fightings were “ok” too.
6/10 would get stuck again in the Barney part.

  15. Unfinished card! It’s impossible to drive on a trailer, it’s stuck.
