Spider Hole

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

17th July 2011

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

The rebels have set up a special base within some canyons, hoping the Combine will come rushing through.

The objective of the base is to stop as many Combine soldiers from passing as possible.

If more than 10 pass then you have failed.

Notes

I first contacted Blake in May 2010 and requested permission to host the file. He sent me the file to beta (or should that be alpha?) test and said he would update it before releasing it. As time went on it got pushed to the bottom of our task lists.

Eventually, we agreed that if I hadn’t heard back from him by June of this year I would release it as is.

To my knowledge he is working at Tango Gameworks and is obviously busy.

One last thing, don’t let the “alpha” designation put you off. It’s a polished piece of work but definitely could do with some tweaking to make it better.

Thanks go to Blake for allow PP to be the only site where this map is available.

  1. Phillip says Play It!

This is an interesting release in that the amount of work that went into it is never really seen during gameplay – at least not if you only play it once.

The movable concrete bunker is wonderful but unfortunately it’s wasted because there are never enough Combine in the same place at the same time.

I would recommend playing the first time and just exploring. Don’t worry about the Combine at all. In fact, there’s a good chance you are not needed!

Get to know the place and the various methods of getting around – make sure you find the trolley across the canyon. Then, when you have a feel of the areas, play it again and have some fun.

This map is definitely wasted on its own but could have been a fantastic part of something larger and harder.

  2. Maybe?

I didn’t like it…enemies always come from the same place and there is no real challenge the map like phillip explain is well detailled and interconnected and could really be an enjoyable map for multiplay fragging but as a single play experience it wasn’t for my enjoyable…

  3. Maybe?

We find ourselves in some underground bunker. Onscreen text says that the Combine are going to break through this territory, our task is to prevent them from doing that.

The layout is quite decent. We can go under the ground for supplies and pathfinding signs. On the surface the exits are blocked by bulletproof forcefields. You should’t forget about the gravity gun: there are gas cans and jumping mines. The design is somewhat monotonous, so it didn’t cause exploration interest in me.

The difficulty is low, but the last wave is very hard. The ending is not spectacular, we just see a congratulation and then it moves us to main menu.

The “arena” idea itself is not bad, but when there’s nothing else besides the “arena”, there’s no pleasant feeling of moving forward.

In my opinion, it’s an average map. If it had better design and was a part of something bigger, it would be better.

    Play It Later

I played this quite weeks ago in the middle of 100 DoN, so I expect so much more combat in HL2 style, but I think this whole release it feels just like a testing mod, I mean that goal of not letting waves of cmb escape is a cool concept but is not well used here, and therefore, there is no challenge at all, I mean in my opinnion i’d ignore that aspect of the mod, and I just concentrate in doing like a 30 min high great mayhem combat against the combine, with Overwatchs elites, some hunters, and maybe some striders and some air units like helicopter or gunship, like being in a main important ressistence place that the cmb are trying to conquer, so the main goal would be so much better if the mod would set a “deffend with your life” concept, I mean deffend with all your strenght that ressistance bunker, that would be a perfect challenge, resist the cmb offensive in some determinated time, and also the main features in the bunker like the corridors and the cool train rail would be so much better used than they are now.

  6. Play It Now!

I really liked this release but nor for a typical HL type play. Phillip wraps it up pretty well, play it and then repeat it just to get a sense of all the different modes of getting from point a to b and so on. There isn’t the HL type of accomplishment here but as a stand alone type of game I think its great. Play it different ways, using everything available, mines, gas cans etc etc. For me this map, like some others acts like a refresher training map, meaning there are usually other ways to fight an enemy than just bullets.
