Sity

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

1st March 2009

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

The cities are empty; mankind is missing. In the distant future, where this mod is set, everyone remaining on the planet has given up their lives to virtual reality where their every need is taken care of by a machine. You play a nameless faceless citizen randomly selected to be woken from your virtual reality to perform routine tasks for the AI-human hybrid that runs ‘Sity’ and in return you are promised a safe return into the virtual reality system. As you play you’ll uncover that the task’s you are performing aren’t as routine as you’re told and the incentive of returning into the virtual reality system might not remain your favourite option.

My mod will explore a range of features, some tried and tested, others new and experimental, all aimed at keeping the player interested and excited. Some of these features include player controlled slow motion, freerunning over rooftops, logic puzzles and immersive storyline. I’ve been researching these features for a half year as a part of my Personal Project, a huge project directed by myself for school. The Idea behind the mod is that most players don’t play violent games because they enjoy the violence and they would be just as inclined to play games without violence so long as they have the other features they enjoy. For that reason many of the puzzles you find in Sity will be physical and will get your adrenaline pumping, every event will tie into the story line for improved immersion and your path forward will be relatively undirected by anyone but yourself so that you’re required to uncover the progression yourself.

Great mod, pity about the jump puzzles, which I feel are rather pointless. I much prefer thinking puzzles. The end was a little letdown with the plain white light.

BTW, when I jumped down the train and made my way along the end, if you “use” the door right at the end (not the normal door), it just turns white.

Keep up the good work Alex!

  2. AlexCrafter

Thanks for putting it up here! The jumping puzzles were a part of my research, I added them so the game appeals to a wider range of gamers. I would have preferred to have let the mod go on for longer but I just didn’t have the time so I had to end it when the player got out of the underground. That door thing is strange, not quite sure how that happened. Thanks for the comment!

  3. Raven

Anyone else having a problem with it not appearing in the Steam Games tab?
I relaunched Stean 3 times, then did a manual restart on the pc, tried again, – still no luck.

  4. uhhh, that sounds unique! unfortunately I won’t be able to play it right now… hopefully I will have enough time for it this week!

    Play It Now!

I am not a fan of jumps either…
But they are well done and tricky.
No problems with loading it into the steam games.

  6. Raven

Oh, I see the problem. In the readme file, it says the mod is for Ep2, – which I don’t have.
I didn’t see that info in the header so I just DL’d it.
    Nevermind 🙂

  7. Coount_de_Monet

Exactly what I don’t like: a pointless solitary walk through boring platforms.
It takes all kinds, just not for me.
I’m back to Offshore and Metastasis.

  8. Maybe?

Nice. No weapons. I like it. Could have been better.

  9. I’ve updated this post to reflect the fact it is an Episode Two mod.

  10. Think Twice

For me, this was deja vu all over again… I loved Portal, and will play it again, but until then, I don’t want to have it suddenly sprung on me in a HL2 mod! I’m way past my physical prime, so an experience that is keyed so heavily towards twitch gaming is too cruel for these ol” fingers. Some of the ideas and environments were very creative, but all of the precision jumping made this mod torture, plain and simple.

  11. Maybe?

Oh, I do like the layout. It’s well placed.

    Play It Now!

Given just for the setting and minimal plot, which create an extremely intriguing game universe (akin in some ways to Minerva, but not quite as well done). This mod makes me want to make a similar mod. :\ The occasional jumping puzzle is fun in a nostalgic sort of way, but jumping puzzles of the precise timing variety are hardly any fun at all; I wish modders would figure that out.

  13. Phil Bolton

OK – I’m in the room with the pistons going up and down – and a message says something about drug induced increased performance, dose being controlled by the mousewheel – ?????????

Mouse wheel does nowt —- somebody give me a clue — what’s next?

  14. Play It Now!

very good mod! reminds me of portal.

@phil: theres a button near the last “cylinder”, I almost overlooked that, too. then just jump. mousewheel will only make it a bit easier, its no necessity!

    Maybe?

Nice puzzles, mapping needs a lot of work.

    MEh, I found a bug
After the trains when the lights comes nearer and nearer to me, the whole screen just gets white and nothing happens –> shit

    edit: ooh, wait, lol
That’s the end right? I hate it when people never say where and when their mod has ended

Sry for doublepost, didn’t knew that I was already finished with the mod ^^Cool mod, but poor puzzles
The level architecture is really good which makes it worth enough to download.
The train scene was not very nice, you have just no idea where to walk and it’s pretty hard to jump from one train to another, cause one is faster. So when you hesitate to run, you fail to jump on the other train (mirrors edge train scene was better and fairer)
But good mod, much too short and too easy and simple puzzles. (the train scene is no puzzle)

  19. Ok, this one just annoyed me.

Was enjoying the whole thing quite alot…

Then comes the jumping parts! I seriously suck at jumping and the first one with the pillars frustrated the hell out of me, I finally get through it and then shortly there after the damn Train..

I did like the idea, it moved well and did make me think.

So overall good mod, specially if you like jumping!

I have to say The train jumping was just to annoying…. so I just gave up.. : (

    Play It Later

It was alright, the levels were not the prettiest by far, and the puzzles weren’t too difficult.

I like the train jumping from there to there.

There should be a whole mod based on that.

    Think Twice

Right from close to the start, after the blocks in the water, a jump I’ve failed at 40 times. Despite jumping in hundreds of maps. OK, tell me, why is this fun? It isn’t. To me, its simply dumb. Was going to be an “Avoid It” however in the end, I softened up (but still quit this ‘thing” for my own sanity).

  23. I can’t seem to use the “controlling the dosage” mechanic with the mousewheel, am I doing something wrong?

    1. So I finished it… I never had to use that mechanic, and I’m not sure if it was implemented correctly.

  24. Maybe?

I actually really enjoyed this mod. The setting is interesting and the story is really cool too. I’m actually quite fond of jumping even though many people hate it, and the train section at the end was super fun. Speaking of, the ending is terrible and makes no sense, although the readme saysn that this is “part 1 of episode 1” so I guess it’s just a fragment of a game and not the full experience.

There are negatives apart from that, specifically the piston puzzle due to having to wait a lot and the puzzle right after that which seems to just make the mod longer and not better.

This is truly a mod that deserves the maybe recommendation from me, some people will enjoy it like me but others will hate it. If you like experimental games, I recommend you play it.

  25. Think Twice

This map is boring with basic puzzles. I really didn’t enjoy this map at all and here’s why.

    Score Sheet

Usage of space and world brushes: 2/10
Boxy rooms with little to no detail.

    Visuals 2/10
All I remember seeing is concrete and blue doors. Not much else to say.

    Gameplay: 6/10
The puzzles were easy enough to complete. Failed a few times, but nothing much to them. The trains was probably the best part, but since quick saving broke for me, every time I failed I had to restart the whole puzzle.

    Final Score: 10/30 – 33%

Final Comments: Play it if you want to, the screenshots don’t lie.
