for Half-Life 2

Doors. Are they locked or just waiting to open with death and pain right behind them?

Only one way to find out. Try to open them.

Collect weapons, ammo and press buttons to make some doors unlock.

This is a good one, albeit short. A nice, little , well-thought-out combine-fest.

A great map. Good clear environments and lots of ammo. I was able to indulge my favourite pastime of lobbing grenades at gangs of combines. Watch ’em fly. Wheee! More please, Maxkiller.

Not bad for a first map.

  4. Phillip says Maybe

Beside having the absolutely worst map name EVER, this was fun to play. The actual layout makes no sense and the textures etc are very basic.

The fact that soldiers appear in room you have previously cleared is a little annoying but I enjoyed playing through this.

As single maps go, this is basic and it doesn’t offer anything new or cool.

    Maybe?

Why am I reviewing this? It’s a good question. After all, the author made this almost 10 years ago and probably has no idea why we’re talking about it now. It’s not like these words will be relevant.

But the reason I do is for anyone who ever made a “First Map.” This is a good example of what you should aim for. You can tell that the author was experimenting with different entities, but it all works in a fairly cohesive way. You’ve got your curved walls, your windows, mounted guns, Combine spawns, monitor and a camera, a friendly NPC, etc. You’re putting the system through its paces and seeing what it can or cannot do.

In fact, with more time and polish, it could have been a respectable little release. But the lighting and visuals are very bland and it’s also quite challenging, mostly due to obnoxious turret placement and lots of AR2 Combine without any Suit energy in sight. You get tons of Suit for the return trip, which is a slog as you encounter room after room of Combine, but it’s still a battle of attrition. No tactics, no strategy, just a lot of Combine barrelling at you like the author ran out of ideas.

  6. Haha, the way this is named I thought it was Phillip’s

  7. Avoid It!

Apart from taking waaaay longer than it should have, this map does not look good and is very frustrating. It’s just room after room of soldiers and shotgunners, over and over and over. It would be boring if not for the ridiculous amount of deaths I had. There’s barely any decoration either. There’s nothing to break up the gameplay aside from some mounted guns. The ending is also awful.

I should probably have more to say about this after playing it for 37 minutes, but it’s just so dull and frustrating. It’s not worth playing. I highly recommend you avoid it.

(Sidenote) Regarding what Phillip said, I think “What’s the Best/Worst Mod/Map Title” would make an interesting discussion.

  8. Think Twice

Understandably, an author’s very first map is commonly their worst work, I’d be interested in whether or not “Maxkiller” has made any other maps in the 10 year time-span, and criticizing a map now would be meaningless if there wasn’t something new made by the author to compare it to.

This map serves less as something to play/enjoy, more so as an example for future mappers what are the “dos and don’ts” when creating maps. “My First Map” has all the common traits of a poorly designed map… Lack of enemy variety, a drab, boring setting, bad lighting. Nothing is too interesting or original for that matter, the cramped hallways and turret corridors just struck me as a Nova Prospekt-esque map. To those looking for an enjoyable map to play, don’t even glance at this entry. It’s not worth your time.

One could go further into detail about how a map should allow the player to have a somewhat clear understanding of what they’re doing, where they are, what is their objective, etc,. and that’s really what separated Half-Life from games like DOOM, you’re not just going from room to room clearing enemies in a monotonous fashion… there’s purpose to your journey… but to my understanding the author was intending to just see what he could do in Hammer, not produce a masterpiece. Regardless, I’d advise people to follow the words of Male_Citizen when contemplating whether or not they should upload their very first map.

“Word of the wise… keep it to yourself”

  9. Play It Later

If that truly was a first map I am impressed. it’s not perfect, what with the poor/missing textures on most things, but I thought the game play was pretty decent. I didn’t mind having to go back to the same rooms to clear out more enemies because it kind of made sense. This is WAY better than some of the stuff that has been posted lately.

    Maybe?

This is very unbalanced. And probably with a different name I’d have assessed this map different.

To be a first map some errors like the placing of enemies and mounted guns are quite evident.

Also the combat was predictable, and the backtracking was kind of annoying and make me think: Where the heck those CMB went out???

So yeah all in all is a big maybe for me, and please don’t name a map like that, use some creative thoughts for good sake!

  11. Maybe?

This map is ok, there are some problems like the enemy spawn (the turrets are pain in a bad place) the lights and something like that.
7/10 would see ragdolls in doors again

  12. Think Twice

If blasting Combine as they go through door ways is your thing, then this map is for you. One could think the author took the idea of the player “using their environment to their advantage” too seriously.

Although it gets easier towards the end the placement is off and that’s what I think really hurts the mod. Everything looked average, nothing to complain about in particular.

If a challenging rookie’s try is your thing then check out this map (you masochists :P). Otherwise it’s not that impressive and you should steer away from it. I do hope the author has improved if he continued his ventures through modding.

  13. Play It Now!

For a first map it’s good. Good use of space. Reminds me of Backtrackville. Lots of grenades, love when you can use a bunch of them. Tough but I’ll be playing it several times.
