Gordon’s Bag of Holding

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

26th December 2010

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

Tired of only being able to carry one item at a time? This mod could be a partial answer for you. You can carry up to 9 saw blades and 9 cannisters.

You can then “pick” them out of your “Holding Bag” to use them almost immediately.

Think of this as a demonstration of a new gameplay mechanic, rather than just a playable level.

  1. Phillip says Maybe

Okay, let’s get straight to the point: The mechanic is quite interesting. Being able to collect items in HL2 is kinda cool, although not revolutionary.

My problem is that this level really doesn’t show it to its full potential. I feel that I should have had an area to collect everything and then a few areas to actually use it.

I know I’m not the sharpest tool in the bag but the first time I played the level, I had beaten it before I remembered the new mechanic! Once you get into the main room, you don’t have much time to collect stuff, you just have to start killing zombies.

I understand that levels from Guildhall are about portfolio pieces but if things aren’t demonstrated properly then a lot of hard work is wasted.

It was hard for me to choice my recommendation image because it’s not particularly fun to play but it’s not the worst thing to have been released this year.

Would be nice to see a modder get permission to sue this in their mod and see how much fun it could have been.

For potential modders, I would recommend reading the Level Design Document, which is linked to from the author’s homepage.

  2. Maybe?

You see, I love these maps that are made to demonstrate some new gameplay mechanics or different gameplay styles. You can have good maps, like that A Scanner Darkly map, not-that-bad maps, like the Underbelly map, and bad maps, like this.

I understand the concept and I think that it is a very good idea- I could personally see this working on Ravenholm maps, or for people that just want to use the gravity gun. The execution is simple and to the spot.

However, apart from that, there is nothing nice to this map. Take the new mechanic, and its another bland map, and totally not fun to play. These stars I’m giving are for the mechanic, not the map- I can see this being used in future mods.

  3. Maybe?

I played as the author intended and did not enjoy it much.
    Nicely devised ‘mechanic” though.

I would not like to see it HL2 games and mods. There’s enough keybindings as it is and using more, in the heat of battle, detracts.

However, I played again and did not bother with the bag. There’s enough objects to use as weaponry and win.
Much better! I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

‘maybe” because it’s fun but v. v. short, although there is a pleasant surprise 🙂

  4. Play It Later

I can’t comment on the “holding bag” “cos it didn’t work for me, c and v did nothing—

I completed the map using the Gravity Gun ————- but it was fun!
    Maybe I’ll try again.

You have to put the CFG files into the cfg. folder in ur hl2ep2 steam files buddy.

    Play It Later

the reason I played this one along with “A scaner darkly” it was to taste the new dynamics in gameplay possible in HL2 and actually it seems that is noot hard to put some interesting new dybamics in gameplay, I mean i’d love to have this bag of holding along with me in ravenholm, it’s the perfect device to haveclose to the Grav Gun, I liked that maybe the only issue on this map, is that the lenght of it is really short and the combat is so predictable, maybe longer and with more interesting puzzles and combat situations out of the normal line this would be a play it now, that hunter at the end was ok, but we have to accept that a poor hunter in an elevator is like having a fish swiming in the air, is out of it’s natural element.

So this is a perfect Play It Later.

  6. Think Twice

It was hard for me to decide between Avoid it and Think Twice, but I honestly had some fun playing it. The concept is really cool and well done, but the map itself isn’t really, it’s basically just a room full of zombies and combine to kill apart from one small hallway and a hunter at the end. I wouldn’t say it’s exactly worth playing, but I’m impressed with the mechanic enough to say consider it.
