for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

9th May 2022

CrossoverVille 2, in partnership with Map Labs as usual, is the sequel to 2015’s CrossoverVille. While the original asked mappers to merge Half-Life with another game, CrossoverVille 2 was more wide open, allowing entrants to cross over to any other form of media in their maps.

This is the second challenge of three in the Hammer Cup 2022.

As always, if you’re interested in learning more about Map Labs and maybe even participate in their upcoming challenges, visit the Map Labs Discord.

  1. It didn’t take me an hour to finish this but at least it’s worth a play.

    Half-Chamber by Cache99
    It is okay

Not much of a gameplay here. All you have to do is to explore the map.

    Madness Combat by Tacarish
    It is bad

This is the first entry I didn’t enjoy. The combat is kinda frustrating especially I rarely get health items, and I barely progress the game so I decided to stop because I didn’t like it.

    Condemned Zone by Coralilac
    It is bad

The second entry I didn’t enjoy. It sure has blocking feature which is good but hitting enemies with a stunstick is a pain in the ass. The hit detection is so bad, the stunstick barely does anything at all.

Jax Payne – Part 1 by ThatsRidonkulous
    It is WOW!

Fast paced, slow motion feature just like in Max Payne, this is one of my favorite entry.

    Something Legendary by Xinus22
    It is WOW!

I hope we get to see more of crossovers like this, especially huge fan of Megaman here.

    Breenstein by Maki
    It is great!

I love the boss fight at the end, gameplay is exactly like Wolfenstein.

    Hotline 17 by Duck
    It is great!

Fun to play on top down view, gets frustrating when you take hits. It’s also a pain that when you die in a level, you have to start all over again

    Hardboiled by Kanishka
    It is good

Not much of a gameplay but it is still has some fun in it if you really pay attention to details rather than run and shoot everything you see.

Reality Meltdown by Matt71490 AKA Event Horizon
    It is WOW!

Another favorite entry, except lack of exposure in crossovers. My favorite part in this one is The Shining except I don’t get to spend much time in it.

    Summary

So far most of them are enjoyable while some aren’t for me because of the frustrating gameplay.

This is the first entry I didn’t enjoy. The combat is kinda frustrating especially they kill you in mere seconds with insane accuracy. It took me less than a minute to finish because of how short this entry is.

  7. Play It Later

Loved it. All the maps ooze with aesthetic, they’re all distinct from one another (Except for Jax Payne and Condemned, but those are both based on IP’s that take place in inner-city ambiences.)

While the gameplay in general isn’t anything out of this world, I had a lot of fun just looking around, you can really tell the devs put a lot of time and effort into their entries – I’d love to see continuations to many of the maps in here.

    Half-Chamber by cache99
    It is bad

I have no idea what the point of this map is. Exploring it leads to dead ends and scripts that send you back to the main menu. I only discovered a gravity gun that I have no access to, and noclipping around the map reveals that there isn’t anything else you can do, apart from going to the same places over and over again. I haven’t played Antichamber, but it’s probably not THIS. I’m sorry, but this map get a “Bad” rating from me.

    Madness Combat by Tacarish
    It is okay

This one was better, but it didn’t really excite me either. Based on the Flash series of animations and games of the same name (an interesting and nostalgic choice!), this map is a simple arena level where you have to make it to the end and get the highest score you can. The shooting is fun, and the aesthetic of the map definitely reminds me of the original series, but it somehow felt empty and bare: there was no music, no massive amounts of blood, no real decoration and I found it to be a bit short. Still, let’s not forget that the gunplay was enjoyable, replayability was present in the form of two weapon loadouts, and the CSS weapons were a nice addition. If only the map was longer and felt more “alive”, this definitely could have been one of the better entries here. (P.S.: For some reason, I got a purple-black chequered texture on the walls, don’t know what that was for…)

    Condemned Zone by Coralilac
    It is good

THIS is what you call an atmospheric map! Based on the equally chilling game Condemned: Criminal Origins, this map is long, claustrophobic and has a strong “dingy” feeling to it. The lighting is great, the scripted sequences were creepy (no forced jumpscares = good) and the concept of the game fits surprisingly well with the aesthetic of HL2, with the Combine chasing the rebels working well as a parallel to the plot of Condemned. My biggest problem with the map was the combat, which was a bit janky and unpredictable. To me, the true problem lies with your weapon, which is a great idea and fits well with the map, but in reality, it feels weak and poor. For example, there’s no “thud” when you hit anything and sometimes the blocking worked, but the animation didn’t. Still, this is a great adaptation of the original game for me, but it could have been just a little better.

Jax Payne – Part 1 by ThatsRidonkulous
    It is WOW!

EXCELLENT entry! This entry takes everything that makes Max Payne great and pours it into an adrenaline-filled, dark and beautiful level. The comic panels were incredible and were clearly written with passion and love for both franchises. The gunplay is great, the bullet time was seriously fun and the weapons were enjoyable, apart from the dual pistols which I found to be very poor in comparison. Other than that, I don’t have anything else to say, this is a fantastic entry!

    Something Legendary by Xinus22
    It is WOW!

Another WOW entry for me. For me, the presentation was undoubtably the greatest part of this entry: from the PS1-era inspired environment, to one of the cutest Alyx’s (Alyxs??) I’ve ever seen, you can’t not think of the original Mega Man Legends when you play this map. The gameplay was really fun and something different, however I wish there was a bigger enemy variety, since fighting the same enemy did end up a bit boring near the end. The boss fight was fun and traversing through the map was interesting (the visuals did help!), however I did feel that it was too dark at times. Despite these issues however, this map is definitely one of the prettiest in this competition and surely one of the most memorable ones yet!

    Breenstein by Maki
    It is good

This was another enjoyable entry that is a great representation of the game it wants to replicate. The mapping was just what you would expect for a Wolf3D-based map, with a lot of fun combat and secrets to discover. The mapping is basic and blocky and the environment is simple and primitive, which I usually don’t really like, but since Wolf3D isn’t very far off, I believe it works well with the theme. That also rings true for the lack of any lighting at all, which results in a “mat_fullbright 1” scenario, but don’t let that deceive you. The final boss was great, enjoyable and – for me – hilarious! If you’re a fan of the original game, then this is definitely for you!

    Hotline 17 by Duck
    It is okay

I really, REALLY wanted to love this level, because I love both HL and HM, but I got so frustrated for all the wrong reasons I just couldn’t bear to give it an “It’s Good” rating. For starters, the atmosphere and the lighting are both excellent, prop placement is great and realistic (the places actually feel and look furnished) and these to me are the entry’s strongest aspects. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for the gameplay. I know it’s meant to be frustrating and difficult like the game is based on, but the difference between fair and unfair difficulty lies in the fact that when a game is fair, you get mad at yourself. When the game is unfair, you get mad at the game. The reason I’m saying this is because the biggest problem lies with the lack of visibility you have. The camera isn’t far enough to see the enemies, so mostly, you’ll just shoot blindly until you hit someone, or even worse, until you get hit by the lightning-reflexes of the Combine soldiers. It gets especially worse in the last two levels, where enemies are too far for you to even see them. It’s a real shame though, because this was an excellent idea, and with equally good presentation.

    Hardboiled by Kanishka
    It is okay

This is a fun entry that doesn’t really have any gameplay, and it’s mostly full of gags and jokes. I like the music in the background and the presentation (mapping, lighting, custom stuff) is nice, but I can’t really say a lot about it, since I also don’t know about the original source material. That’s why I feel like I didn’t understand it that much. I laughed a bit, but I guess that’s it. Props to the mapper for making this a humorous entry in contrast with most maps here.

And last but definitely not least…

    Reality Meltdown by Matt71490
    It is great!

Definitely the most interesting and “out of this world” entry of this competition. This entry takes inspiration from a huge amount of films, like Drive, The Shining, Alien and even The Grand Budapest Hotel, which is a combination I thought I would never see in my entire life, not to mention in HL2 of all places. Each scene is replicated almost perfectly, and I love how the camera and the direction both change depending on the corresponding scene; this can be seen in The Grand Budapest Hotel and in 2001, and I can’t express how much respect I have for the author for doing something like this. The gameplay is fun and completely combat-based, which shouldn’t be a surprise by now. Also the inclusion of soldiers wielding revolvers is interesting, and surprisingly I have never seen it in any map or mod until now.
Overall, this is definitely one of the most visually and conceptually interesting maps here, even though it doesn’t bring a lot to the table when it comes to gunplay.

    Final Thoughts
This was the first competition I’ve played after a long gap of not playing through many mods or maps, so it was a pleasant surprise. I love seeing how much the map making community has progressed and how many people have taken up mapping, thus continuing the legacy of Source-mod making.

This competition is mostly based on creativity, and not so much in introducing new gameplay features, so it makes sense on why many entries would have excellent visuals and and a distinct aesthetic, but wouldn’t be so fancy gameplay-wise, which to me is completely okay, since it keeps things interesting and keeps you waiting for more.

If you’re fine with this idea, then get ready for an incredible nostalgia-fueled blast to the past!

  9. i had fun with the hotline miami one

  10. Play It Now!

Great collection of maps, almost every entry was interesting and creative.

    Half-Chamber
    It is bad

I don’t understand this one. The map ends whichever way I go and…I don’t get it.

    Madness Combat
    It is okay

Very short entry that I guess captures the Madness Combat series quite well. Slide feature was interesting but the map didn’t really seem big enough to use it.

    Condemned Zone
    It is great!

I really enjoyed this map, captures the aesthetic of the Condemned games while still fitting with Half-Life 2. All of the NPC interactions with the environment before attacking is so on point with the Condemned games.

    Jax Payne – Part 1
    It is WOW!

This map is great. Captures the aesthetic of Max Payne perfectly and even includes cutscenes reminiscent of Max Payne. The mechanics worked well and I could honestly play a whole mod of this.

    Something Legendary
    It is okay

Interesting retro aesthetic with custom enemies. Last boss battle went on for quite a while and the map in general got a bit old.

    Breenstein
    It is bad

While effort has been made to make it look like the original Wolfenstein there just isn’t enough here for it to be all that interesting. Map could of really used some music. Mecha-Breen at the end was cool.

    Hotline 17
    It is good

Cool map that captures the gameplay and aesthetic of Hotline Miami. Aiming was kinda painful and I would die despite shooting directly at an enemy, but Half-Life was obviously never designed to be played like this.

    Hardboiled
    It is bad

Very short map with no actual gameplay. Its going for a style and is aimed at comedy, I suppose its okay but it lasts less than five minutes.

    Reality Meltdown
    It is great!

Great map that travels through different movies and captures the feel of them. Visually this is the most interesting map.

  11. Hec
    Maybe?

Despite this map lab was quite better in terms of the length and coherence of the entries.

To me, most of them were greatly inspired, as the one that uses Max Payne, or Wolfstein for inspiration. They were great entries.

    It is WOW!

The ones inspired by Mega Man and Hotline Miami were also good entries, but really difficult to play and quite annoying because of this, I had to cheat in order to complete them.

    It is good

The rest were just average entries and overall made me think that putting a time limit for this kind of mapping challenge is quite bad because not many entries are going to be developed with minimum testing or good quality.

Hope the rest map lab challenges are better, and yeah I think I’ll stop playing them for a while as it is quite hard to follow the pace of these mapping releases. Sure I miss the days when developers just made their work with no time limits and for HL2 gamers to enjoy, so… Yeah It would be nice to see some other mods developed by original modders instead of an endless array of this mapping competitions nowadays here in RTSL.
