Outpost 529: Modder’s Cut

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

21st April 2014

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

The Combine are coming to destroy your generator.

Defend it at ALL costs. If it gets destroyed then the Resistance will suffer a huge setback.

Since you know they are coming, organize your supplies and defences carefully.

About the Modders’ Cut

Originally, I planned to allow every entrant from the 3×10 mapping competition series, i.e. AmbushVille, DefendVille and MovieVille, the opportunity to update their maps for release in a special mod. That’s why the apostrophe is after the S, because I hoped there would be multiple entries.

As it turned out, only Abraham was interested in updating his map, so instead of a mod, it’s now just an updated release.

Below are the changes he made to his original DefendVille entry.

  • Changed Genorator Health
  • Beefed up enemy waves
  • Made annoying roof guys a little less annoying
  • Added hidden long-range weapons
  • Made citizens talk
  • Nerfed machine gun
  • Fixed scripiting issues
  • Added outro

  1. Phillip says Play It!

Now, I admit I didn’t protect the generator and didn’t replay it to see the new outro.

I don’t really enjoy replaying mods, so I actually found this to be a chore.

That’s not a criticism of the map itself, just a reflection of who I am.

I’m pretty sure I would have enjoyed it much more if it was my first playthrough.

I used the “Play It!” recommendation because I think you should play it, especially if you haven’t played DefendVille.

  2. Play It Now!

I tried this one in DefendVille, and I thought it was one of the better maps in the pack.

It’s a simple defensive map, focused in a tight railyard with buildings bordering it off from the rest of the world. Resources are well-distributed through the map, with more becoming available as the map goes on. Despite the deaths of most of my earlier team members, a medic-buddy kept respawning to give me health and some cover fire. As enemies became more and more aggressive, taking up positions in the buildings above, I felt more and more overwhelmed, up until “clearing out the yard”. The strider and his hunter escort went down easily after that thanks to free rockets and more cover fire.

For those who played the DefendVille version, it isn’t very different. I suppose you could play it for the additional snipers.

“Beefed up enemy waves” – it shows
“Nerfed machine gun” – is that why it went all bezerk if I aimed too much to the side or down?

OK so it starts out rather cool with a nice warning given by the hunter on the roof, turns a bit confusing as I’m seeing ammo for shotgun and ar2 but no guns (til i end up picking them from the soldiers) and I’m still not sure if the mechanic of defending the outpost is obvious enough for a new player, and I would like to somehow mend the machines themselves as they get damaged, as the rebel does when the map starts.
The scanners throwing hoppers was a fun ggun distraction.
Nice vista of soldiers shooting from roofs, I guess they were there in the first place but it was a while back so I’m glad I could still enjoy this mod.
The end tho is what bugged me. I’m very soon left without rebels’s assistance even tho they keep spawning out of that lil room and feels like no suit left in the map (not that I had the chance to look for it more than 2s coming out of shelter) but enemies still coming in waves, so I died after a few combine soldiers, at least twice.
So yea overall it’s a really hard mod for my taste and not sure if in a good way because difficulty does not necessarily means tons of enemies from 3 directions.
The visuals and layout are still nice and well thought out, I hope to see even more from the author, maps or mods 😛

    Play It Now!

Here is what I wrote about this map, back in the “Defend Ville” comp:

    “Outpost 529 by Abraham Lee.
This was also a cool entry that I’d place maybe in a 5th place as a competition. the map size is mainly narrow but the strike is also frontal and you have some rebels on your side that just doesn’t die easy and actually help you win, the central mounted gun is the most valuable strategic place you have to take care of, and lastly that strider at the end is the perfect touch to close the map, so is overall an entertaining great little map.”

Now I would really would change a little that paragraph. Although I recognize this new modder’s cut release makes the map more challenging in combat terms, indeed I think increases it’s difficulty, because it seems the hordes of CMB soldiers were increased, also you rely less on the main mounted machine gun at the top of the building, and the rebels now die easier than in the previous version.

Now, I think the finale in here was improved so cool, when you can see the rebels arriving in that armored car at your post after the defeat of the strider, that’s just a nice touch as I never have seen that armored car model animated in any mod or map.

Overall this was a nice improvement of the original map, and definitely adds more challenge in combat and action terms.

  5. Play It Now!

Enjoyed the map very much the first time, and this is nicely improved. I always thought the Ville series’ showed the pressure of time limits and its too bad more didn’t spend time improving their maps at their pace.
Thanks so much for making that effort with this map!

  6. Play It Now!

I don’t usually like defendville stuff but this one is good. Catching and resetting the mines is fun. This update is better than the original.
