1. Phillip says Maybe

I was close to giving this a Play It recommendation but felt that the varying styles of gameplay within the map may not suit everybody.

The first map is fun and besides the background has a nice feel. The second map was also fun, although I had to cheat in the area with the scientists, because no matter what I did, I couldn’t get the beam out of the small room.

I hated the parachute drop but it’s easily avoided.

I won’t detail the rest, but finish with saying you should probably give it a go, but since it doesn’t have a story and proper flow, don’t worry about cheating and jumping sections.

2. Think Twice

What a waste of a download!

Made up of 4 sections, none of which were much, in order of play TT, AI, TT and the last one is certainly an AI. Looks wise this appears to be made up of very old stuff cobbled together, despite the CREDITS.txt saying 2010-2011. If this really is as recent as it claims it really should have looked better, I’m not trying to be nasty, but some ten year old maps and mods look better than this.

Gameplay! the first mission was better than the rest but in itself nothing special. Overall there if very little fun to be had.

3. Maybe?

I didn’t think it was that bad. Ok graphics aren’t the focus in this one. But seriously we are talking about hl1 anyway so who cares.

It’s the combat you should lay your eyes on and regarding that I believe this tiny mod did a decent job. It is of course not perfect but as Phillip stated in his review it offers some fun for about 30 minutes. So give it a try when you’re in the mood to smash some Alien&grunt ass.

4. Think Twice

What we’ve here is a 5 map minimod – with descending quality in numeric order imo…
The first one is indeed the best, just as … said. It has a clear objective with nice textures and layout, good combats. Just a story and puzzles are missing.
Secondly, you’re in a a weird environment with bright textures and that’s quite the opposite of the first map – no combat, but puzzles. Escaping is the goal.
Map number 3 is a short scene, paradropping out of a plane, you have to fly through circles in the sky before landing. Otherwise you’ll drop and die.
After safe landing on the ground map number 4 starts where #3 ended.
A single building and a text message telling you to find a way to open a “gate”.
Little combat is here again, but no puzzles of course – as expected. The only thing is to find some sort of switch.
At last, there’s an arena. Here, there’s unavoidable fighting, but the trick to finish this mod is not that obivous at first. Won’t tell too much now, as it’s surely a spoiler.
By the way, between the maps is a, more or less funny, save-your-game advice.
The “secret” areas are a joke, as they are pretty easy to find.

In conclusion, it’s a shame what the author created after the first map. Okay, the 2nd one isn’t that bad too, but it just doesn’t fit together. No map fits to the others. That could’ve been done way better, in the meaning of the author isn’t that unskilled, it just seems he got bored or was taking drugs lol

Pro’s:
-First map is cool
-Some decent mapping, good layouts and design
-Average combat at least (map 1,4 and 5)
-Some puzzles (almost only in map 2)
-Few nice ideas
-New music titles

Con’s:
-No story
-Short playtime (~15-45 mins)
-Almost no puzzles (except map 2)
-Balancing – it’s just too easy (maybe except maps 2,5)
-No atmosphere
-Maps don’t fit together
-Secret areas aren’t “hidden”

Tip for parachute drop:
Just walk in the air, and hold the spacebar (or whatever your jump-key is), this makes you drop smoother and it’s possible to solve this without cheating.
Note: I had also had to noclip in map 2, just like Phillip, as I also couldn’t get the beam past the scientist in the small room. Started shooting the scientists until all ammo was gone, but didn’t help too. I wonder if there’s a crowbar missing accidently..

5. Note: This mod was originally going to be for the Dreamcast. That’s why there’s saving zones (HL1 Dreamcast mod and saving don’t go well together).

6. Hec

I have absolutely no idea of what to do at the final arena, I killed the alien grunt and nothing!!, what shall I do???

Any clues help!

1. Hec

Got it there was
a big obvious lever in the map, that I stupidly diddn’t see
;)

Play It Later

I give this a PL because I like little ops in HL, that’s why I loved Hardwire mod, and PQL 1 and 2 mods, this mod is obviously far far away from those master mods.

But well here I found pretty and interestng the first map altough it looked like a Day of defeat map, and i’d love to play that map with 2WW weaponery if the modder could have provided.

The paratroop mission was really cool and unlike the rest I really liked that mission, becuase I found it interesting and very close to a real military misson into HL which I also like.

The escape map was also interesting but difficult, unlike the rest I no-noclipped there, I used impulse 101, in order to smash and chop up the scientist body that obstaculized the beam rquired to pass there.

and well I think the only part where I obviously had problems with was the arena, I made a silly mistake because I thought that map was centered in that jailed alien grunt caged in that strange structure…

In conclussion was fun to play tough felt the whole mod as scattered non matching maps except for the 3 and the 4th map.

8. Maybe?

I Have been a little disappointing by this one, looking like a merge of experiments and mod ideas. In fact only the three last missions seems to fit together.

The first of five remind me of Ops 1942, fighting in Normandie against Nazis or a something like that.

The second one is completely opposed but interesting. Escape of white and strange place where everybody has been killed.
One word on, I’m surprised to see that some people must cheats to pass it. In my mind get out the first room is the hardest puzzle.
You must put the little crate in fire to find the pistol and then use it to open doors.
Third mission, hem, pretty hard but not impossible. Just jump trough the circles. (Why circles in the sky ?)

After that invest the place you landed on. Kill all that guy who dances better than you and take a cocktail. Then press a button.

Finally fight for your life in the Xen arena. The puzzle here is not easy to find, or too evident. And then you win.

For the whole thing it was a good old mod clumsy made like in the early 2000s.

9. divagante

hello gents, diva here

good to see how this thing got mirrowed here, it got more discussion here than where it was developed =(

i think some explanation about the mod is in order:

1 – the first two maps are indeed the ones with more work put into them. the 3rd/4th maps are the same base map, from another project (non-game related). and the 5th map is just a “boss battle” to tie the thing together.

2 – I am aware the game has no story or anything really glueing it together, also the save areas, and heres why:

this mod was developed over at dcfan.net.ru forums, where hl1 dreamcast mods are developed since 2007. the idea behind this was for me to put as many different kinds of gameplay as possible to show the community the possibilities (i wanted to form a team). just think of this as a messy lab experiment

anyhow, reading the feedback just made my day, thank you ^^

10. Play It Later

This is a very odd mod, but still quite fun.

There is no clear “setting” in this mod. I would describe it as… “a messy lab experiment”, just like the developer, divagante said.

As far as mapping goes, it depends. For example, I think the last two maps were pretty mediocre, but the first two maps were better. If I had to choose which is the best map, I would say the Escape one.

Overall, if you enjoy BM mods and TCs more, then I’m afraid you won’t have fun with this one. If not, then you will most likely do.
