Half-Life Dreamcast

for Half-Life

19th February 2012

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

“Half-Life: Dreamcast is a PC port of the unreleased Sega Dreamcast console version of Half-Life developed by Gearbox Software originally slated for release in late 2000.

The Dreamcast version possesses many unique differences compared to the original PC game and Gearbox’s later PlayStation 2 port, including modified levels, exclusive NPC models and props not seen anywhere else, adjusted difficulty, and a host of sly Dreamcast references hidden throughout.

This PC port allows the game to run as a Half-Life mod on Steam.”

  1. This is another one of those mods I just don’t have time to play but feel you should be downloading and hopefully enjoying.

  2. Derbler

Checked it out when P17 first talked about it. Played an hour or so and the differences were so miniscule that I got bored and uninstalled. Maybe someone who hasn’t played Half-life 50 times would like it more

Tottally agree I felt the same the 40 min or so I played it.

  3. I like the ported improvements to the levels, but placing Dreamcast logo everywhere and changing the key hints in the Hazard Course is stupid. Feels more like an emulator than a mod.

    1. Marphy Black

I didn’t change the key hints in the Hazard Course. That’s how they’re actually displayed in the Dreamcast version. Since I was porting the DC port, it was of course appropriate to bring over the titles.txt alterations as well. At least, I can’t imagine why I would deliberately exclude them as they would make the port less accurate.

I also double checked my files to count the number of Dreamcast logos I included and I could only find two: the game icon in the Steam library browser and the corner window icon at the main menu (replaces the Steam icon).

  4. Ok! If I’ve got this right, this is Half Life that was intended for the Dreamcast and is as near as damn it identical. Now it has been made into a mod to run on a PC for which you need Half Life to play it. Am I missing the point here? I’m sure our dear friend Barnz will tell me, as from looking at the HLDC readme, he was involved in it!

I downloaded, installed and ran this, but when it became obvious this was the Half Life I’ve already played MANY times and after finding no really obvious difference, I switched on the the cheats. I got as far as about half way through ” On a Rail” before thinking “why am I bothering with this?”.

I really can’t see how its possible to rate this, as it is not the original creation of the team who converted it, you need the original Half Life to run it. If you have the original Half Life you’ve already played it and the visual differences are so minor as to be valueless if you have played the original!!!!

At the end of the day this is a totally pointless exercise,

Looks — IT IS HALF LIFE!
Gameplay — IT IS HALF LIFE!
Fun — You need Half Life to run it so you’ve already played it, so you already know it is fun because IT IS HALF LIFE

All the team behind it have proved, is they can convert from one gaming platform to another!!!

  5. Think Twice

This is largely a waste of time. I bothered to play it to the end. I saw NO new content that I noticed.
As far as I could tell Zen was a little shorter and it had some early versions of music from HL2. That’s it. It IS a better way to play HL1 as you get the updated textures but don’t expect any more.

  6. Personal Favourite

A PC port of a Console port of a PC game= Pure Win.

  7. I played for a couple of hours and only noticed subtle differences. The skins for Barney and the grunts are from Opposing Force, and I noticed one small map change where a room was slightly moved. Not enough to make it worth playing through all over again. I sure hope I don’t say the same thing when Black Mesa is finally released!

    1. I don’t think many of us are going to disappointed when Black Mesa Source is released because we know it is a graphical update rather than a new game. Although I suspect many have played the original Half Life many times, to see the game looking visually stunning as well as great gameplay is going to take the original to a new level. Unlike HLDC, its not copy and paste (the HLDC team’s words in their readme), it’s taken a long time and a lot of work by a big team.

My only worry about BM Source is if they remain faithful to the original game play it will be too easy, after all we will already know what’s around every corner.

I just hope BM Source is released soon.

  8. Phillip says Maybe

Have to agree with most of the comments here, it seems to be a waste of effort.

  9. Maybe?

If you wanna play HL1 again, you might wanna try this mod. If you are played HL1 few too many times, skip this. Does not really add anything that special, just few _very_ small map changes etc.

At least they removed that annoying jumping area from Xen.

    Play It Later

Just finnished playing “The Darkness 2” so I thought I’de give this a shot/play! As an old man (66) I used to have a “DreamCast” but never had this game (pity). Played all the way thru but didn’t notice too many changes, still well worth the time and NOT boring by any means!! I still have my original (1998) HL1 game disks, now I can add this one to my collection! Thanks Phillip! 😉

    1. Don’t thank me, thank the authors of the mod.

      1. Which would be Valve, with Gearbox software under contract to port it to the Dreamcast. After all the team who ported it back to the PC did not write the original game.

        1. No, but they did make the mod.

  11. Maybe?

Can’t make it run properly, I can hear sound but crashes even before the HL logo comes up O:)
Anyway, as I’ve seen the comparing screenies, it’s not necessary for me to replay HL1 yet again (I already did the xx time one month ago lol) so it’s easy to neglect 😉

However, if you’re new to HL I think you can “play it now”!, else “think twice!” = “maybe?” 😛

    Think Twice

I have no doubts this is definitely for Real hard ass fans, I mean I maybe found replayability value in the original HL1 in 20 years more or so when i’ve alredy played the HL4 and there’s not much mods toplay anymore lol, and therfore I get nostalgic, but not know.

I even was interested in play HL1 source the valve remake with just some dynamics and graphs from the Source eng. and when I did it, even knowing that the difference on that valve remake is that the models spit yellow blood with my shootings and they don’t blow when you smash their bodies with your crowbar pal, and the water reflection is the same as the source effect, that’s all, I got bored playing the HL1 poor source remake., By the way does anyone knows why there aren’t mods for that specific HL1 Valve source remake???? i’d sincerely would appreciate the explain of that.

So I feel this dreamcast mod the same, the only thing changing for me is the croshair and the models of the Houndeyes and the Vortigaunts those are the most relevant ones and taht’s it. So is that said, is an interesting effort but definietly i’d preffer to play another more crative mod in Gold SCR than this one.

  13. Play It Later

I played it all the way through to the boss battle (Never liked that part).I found some things looking a bit cleaner looking especially Barney. I played it out of curiosity and because I hadnt played HL1 in quite awhile.I used the same settings I do for for the actual game but either I’m getting better at it or this PC port is actually easier.I only died once and I think that was a fluke.

Still a great game after all these years thou

  14. Maybe?

Alright this one is a special case as I see it more as a timepiece, like the Half-Life Alpha 0.52 files that got leaked on to the internet a while back, than an actual mod. Because of this I can’t recommend it if you are looking for a completely new experience. (The only noticeable changes are: some models are different and more cartoony, some textures are higher rez, some textures are lower rez, and VMUs sometimes pop out of destroyed boxes) Although if you want to play all the versions of Half-Life or want to play the original campaign on GldSrc but have a new experience this mod is for you.
