  1. Phillip says Play It!

I like the premise of this map but was disappointed with its implementation. There should have been longer driving sections, because I felt I could have completed the map without the buggy. As you can see from screenshots 11 and 12 it’s possible to get to places you shouldn’t. I even managed to completely avoid the toxic liquid by jumping over the fence.

The placement of an ammo box behind a fence encourages you to try and reach that place, only to find you can’t get out.

Anyway, besides that I quite enjoyed it, but as I said earlier I would have liked longer driving sections.

It’s certainly not a bad map but I am surprised it beat Mountain Caves in the competition.

Definitely worth your time but don’t focus on the details.

    1. Maybe?

Actually, you can get out of that area, if you jump onto the bulldozer and then jump from there over the fence.

Otherwise, you stated almost word for word everything I was going to say about this map, except I also had issues with the fact that if you activate the lift before getting the buggy on it, there’s no way to get it back down, so you lose the buggy permanently. I guess it’s fortunate that the buggy is completely superfluous.

With all that in mind I can’t see giving this any higher than a Maybe. It’s a solid map, and actually has pretty good pacing, but nothing really stands out about it in the gameplay, and visually it’s a bit bland. I can’t think of any type of criteria that could have been used to justify selecting this map as the winner over Mountain Caves. Maybe Mountain Caves was disqualified for using a map that they had started working on before the contest? I don’t know.

If this map’s author is just starting out, then I feel kinda bad constantly making comparisons to someone that, from what I can see, has far more experience, but he already has the encouragement of winning the contest to keep mapping and he needs to step up his game in the future.

  2. Think Twice

I started with a Maybe but realised it would not be honest.

I gave ‘mountain Caves” a PIL and it’s miles better than this.

Cons: The dreaded A.I. disabled. I put that right and I found I needn’t have bothered. Started again in Hard skill and never had to reload!
Including the buggy was useless, the map is too small to need it.
You can easily get to places that you obviously should not.
Eg; I climbed onto a wall to get to the console to open the gate. The leaks were terrible and I needn’t have bothered, I could have walked to the end of the map by jumping off the wall.

Pros: Nice try but needs a lot more work and imagination and Testing.

I would dearly have loved to be positive about the map and the playing experience. Sadly, I was disappointed.

That this won the competition can only be to encourage the mapper and that I commend because there are early signs good mapper here.

  3. Think Twice

AI Disabled. Garage door on the upper level wouldn’t open. Quit, why bother? Almost made this an Avoid It however thought the elevator was cute…. Wasn’t that interesting otherwise.

Won a competition? You have to be kidding me!

  4. Think Twice

I can’t believe it won a competition, if it were the only entrant then maybe, but to beat mountain caves !!!!! No way.

The mapping was ok-ish but the gameplay was next to nil. After playing mountain caves I thought the drought of Half life sp mods was over but this makes me wonder. After reading the comments I still gave it a try, I wish I hadn’t bothered. The only reason I won’t give it an avoid it is because I’m not a mapper and could not have produced even to this level.

    1. Miigga

I was one of the judges and I slightly prefer this one to mountain caves. I think this one has a better balance between puzzle and combat. Mountain caves suffers from the excessive use of zombies, in my opinion.

      1. Even by those standards, I still feel Mountain Caves wins out. Combat and Puzzles may have been well balanced in Canal Run, but I only agree with that in the sense that I found them both to be equally sparse in content.

      2. I’m stunned Miigga. I really am.
While both maps had their faults, Mountain Caves was far better mapped and showed great imagination.
Mountain Caves better explored SDK thus making the mapping harder.

Canal Run was standard HL2. Nothing wrong with that but not well mapped at all, in my opinion.
AI Disabled is a game stopper for those who do not know the solutions.

I’m not alone, see the comments by others.

  5. jgoodroad

this won something? were there only two entries?

mountain caves was way better visualy, it was longer, and it had better gameplay…I can understand if there was another good map that didn’t have the flaws of MC (too many bad placed zombies) but was slightly less well-made I could understand that winning, but this?

    I am disappoint

  6. Think Twice

even with the understanding that this was a restricted (time wise) competition map this wasn’t very well made or have much to offer. drive some, shoot some, find the “element” to open the garage door. way too easy to get out of the map. I suppose it ended once I reached the final dock after swan diving off the ledge. it just crashed out.

  7. Think Twice

Map looks ok. Play is sparse. Worth a single play through.
