VerticalVille: The fifth 6×10 Mapping Competition

7th September 2012

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

Welcome to the fifth mapping competition in the 6×10 series.

For this competition I want you to create a map with plenty of vertical gameplay.

You can have the player work up, work down, work up, then down, or down, then up – as long as most of the movement is vertical I am happy.

It can be inside a tower, outside, a cliff, a cave: anything that requires vertical movement.

You can use elevators, jumps, vehicles, buildings, trees – it’s all up (or down!) to you.

THE JUDGING

The winner will be the map that uses the concept of “vertical gameplay” in the most interesting way, combined with a map that is enjoyable to play.

Length is not a major consideration but very short maps must compensate by providing something intense or amazing.

RULES

The standard 6×10 rules apply, make sure you read them.

You MUST include a readme.txt file with your map. No readme, no chance to win. The readme should include your name, the map’s name, any credits or assets or ideas, details about the setting etc.

If you have any questions about the theme or judging, just ask.

Sponsor and Prize

This competition is being kindly sponsored by EpicTimez.Com.

The prize, in addition to the points, is L.A. Noire: The Complete Edition AND Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3.

  1. I really didn’t expect this, but its pretty nice theme. It might create some interesting scenes.

    Let the mapping COMMENCE!

Hmm. Interesting theme, it’s got me thinking.

  3. I feel this is gonna be much harder to think about then to actually make it.

    Off topic: WELCOME BACK!

    1. I’m sorry to ruin the joy for you but Philip isn’t back. He set this on a timer or something so it would automaticly appear on the site.

  5. Blue Lightning

I wonder if you can ever move in the horizonal? And if so, how much before you lose points?

I mean if the map can not allow a player to move side to side much without losing points, Im not sure how well battles will turn out.

    1. Yeah, there is no way to tell. I guess Philip will be a little more forgiving in this comp since we can’t ask any questions.

WOW, I hope LEON BRINKMAN (SPY) gets in, He’s really good on this kind of mapping style!!!!!

Please Leon if u see this , conssider it!!!

I’m designing a map for this competition (hopefully I will be able to get it done but it does depend on what school work will crop up). It’s got a lot of vertical areas ie, scaling cliffs, staircases. However, it will have some flat open combat areas as well. Is that OK within the rules?

    1. Yeah as long as you have more vertical puzzle/gameplay than the flat areas it should be fine. Just don’t go crazy with vertical areas and make the map long it would get really annoying (in my opinion).

  8. Man, I’m excited about this one 🙂

  9. The prize is really nice in this one, but honestly, This competition would be the same amout of fun without any price at all.

  10. MisterAddy

How would you like custom textures included? Should they be emailed as separate files, or embedded in the map somehow?

  11. MisterAddy

    Just submitted my entry!

  12. Darn, didn’t have time to finish my map…

    1. Finish it quickly and send it to me, I’ll add it to the release but you won’t get any points.

      1. I’ll have to pass this comp. I wasn’t happy with it and it’s not even halfway done.
