  1. Play It Now!

This is a good mod, even though it’s a demo. There isn’t a lot to say about this, so let me jump to the rating of the gameplay and the visuals. This review is kind of sort, but hey it’s a review after all!

    The Gameplay

The gameplay is good enough, the enemies are well balanced, and the geometry of the level helps both the player and the AI. Compared with other mods, that have the player in a big space and a whole horde of combines coming his way, this mod gives cover to the player, as well as supplies placed around, which is clever.

At one point though i was frustrated because the combine elite soldiers did nothing but shoot out combine balls with 100% accuracy towards the turret that i had placed, and then the ball bounced at me and i was dead. This repeated for about 3 times. At the end i was quite disappointed, because i wanted to actually go inside the Borealis, but just saying that you went in and then having the game kick you to the main menu isn’t the best idea to say the least…

Oh and at one point there seemed to be a wrong texture applyment to a floor texture, i think the mapper accidentally applied either the nodraw or the skybox texture to a floor block, which left a gap from which the player could see through the level, not that it gave any unfair advantage since it was on the ground.

    The Visuals

This mod is a demo, so i didn’t expect to find any sort of detail to this mod. One touch i really liked though are the windows, it gives you the feeling that you are in a combine facility, kind of like the Citadel. The textures of the walls, the ceiling and the floor also gave this feeling. The sound effects of the alarms is also a nice touch.

    Conclusion

I enjoyed this mod, the gameplay is good enough, and so are the visuals for a demo mod, although it could have been better. If in the future the developer creates an improved and more polished version of this with everything that this version lacked, then i would definitely play it!

  2. asterixer

Run without problems under Linux. Fun to play!

  3. Can anyone tell me why I keep getting the following message when trying to download directly into Gauge? It has been happening for some time now with various mods and I usually end up having to install manually.

    Install of “maptap://www.runthinkshootlive.com/download.php?id=13674&f=/hl2-ep2/hl2-ep2-sp-ep3jam-hl2ep3-poc.7z” failed.
Invalid install parameters or environment (archive path/account name).
Try re-downloading the file from RunThinkShootLive.com.

  4. Play It Now!

I definitely recommend this map. While it has plenty of issues, most are minor, and don’t ruin the map. I was looking for a fun little map to play and I certainly found one, very enjoyable, pretty well balanced too. Major issues include:
    1. no crowbar
    2. you start with a bunch of weapons just thrown at you instantly… which is weird, but hey, you do you, I would’ve designed it in a way where you pick them up over time but maybe that’s just me.
    3. you come from a wall, not that an empty closet is a better place (I’m working on a map that starts in a tiny hall that is supposed to be a closet but doesn’t look like one but whatever. At least I explained it as G-man teleporting you)
    4. no dialogue whatsoever! It would’ve been nice to include a little dialogue telling you what to do, even just using the stuff built in. Just place an ambient_generic and set the source entity to the npc you want to speak and wala! It’s really easy, and there were some parts where it took me a second to figure out what to do, which isn’t a bad thing really, but there are some where you just have to walk away from Alyx and Mossman, leaving them there, which is un-intuitive, as you expect them to follow you, which they don’t until you reach the next place you abandon them at.
A minor detail really, as I had no trouble getting through anyways, but having them talk, even just a few pre-existing lines that even slightly fit the context would’ve brought the map to life so much more.
    5. JUDITH SITS ON AIR! PLEASE! Just move the chair, it’s not hard. How did you even miss that?

Anyways, those are the cons, but the pros are there as well. As I said, the gameplay is balanced, with some parts more intense than others, with no big open spaces with a bunch of combine shooting at you. There’s a pretty cool (mini) boss fight, that’s foreshadowed earlier, though I won’t say what or how because SPOILERS but I will tell you that bit is well done, and over all a decent, short and fun map. Would definitely recommend it.

I also did a video on it, so if you want to watch that, feel free to check out my channel. Not sure if I’m allowed to put links, I suppose I could look at the guidelines, but I’m too lazy to do that, so you can just reach my channel page from my RTSL profile.

I had a lot of fun with this, thankyou for the experience.

  5. Play It Now!

For the demo is very good, the gameplay is dynamic and diverse, the mapping also liked

  6. Play It Later

Basically a defend the base map. Alyx and Judith are little help.
