I’ve only just started playing this but I wanted to get it listed as soon as possible.
So far it looks very good. Until I’ve played more I can’t give you my detailed opinion but you should certainly download it and give it a try.
Full review to follow.
Excellent
Hmmm… Why couldn’t they find another name?–there’s already a “Dawn” map. I played through it and found it fairly enjoyable, but it was too easy (I didn’t notice a Skill choice when I loaded it), the outdoor scenery was bland and uninspiring, there were too many zombies coming in large groups (but fairly easy to kill, as easy as this mod was), and for the size of the download it was far too short (took me less than an hour). Anyway, after playing Adam’s terrific “Metastasis” this one was a let-down, so….
I think comparing to Minerva: Metastasis is a little unfair. I don’t one mod a year will match that.
Having said that we have to have some kind of comparison guide.
Expect an announcement on these lines within a month or so!
Like Len said, the download seems quite large for the size of the mod especially when you see how sparse it it. That said, it is very well put together.
Light and dark and rich colour blend together to make a beautiful looking mod that I really enjoyed playing.
The action is slightly sporadic and in the end I just ran from the zombies instead of wasting ammo.
If there was a little more action I would keep this one installed and play it again every now and then but it just doesn’t quite make it onto my list. It does still get a
Agreed to the “Play it Now” Its kind of sad that this mod was released on the heels of “Metastasis”, for it has a lot of good going for it, and would have stood well by itself without being in the shadows of a truly great mod. Especially enjoyed the settings, and in particular the farm and the hospital. Some good and original work here.
Look forward to more creations of the Rage Team.
Look forward
wow nice so far, just got to the air boat, fun little mod. the zombies dont seem any more or less gamey than ravenholm. and well its free, cant beat that.so far no bugs or crazy stuff.
From all these wondrous comments here, it seems everyone is eager for another Rage Team release. But according to their website, their next project is a multiplayer FPS. Unfortunate, I must say.
I’ve been hastily trying to download this mod, but to no avail. Oh well, I’ll get there eventually!
I was pleasantly surprised to see that a sort of Louisana swamp dwelling (being from the south myself) had been created and absolutely loved the beginning of it UNTIL it gets to the airboat part. After that, lots of empty spaces and sewers and halls. I absolutely loved the hay roll into the fire and then exploding whilst in the little village.
It started out great and then turned to mediocre. Overall, I’d have to say
i tried to download it but did only get the first time a 110 kb zip file in, that couldn’t be it I thought and a next try did gave me the full download, (i am downloading now that is), and although it seems to be 94,7 Mb’s big that still doesn’t mean a long download time. it’s more that Filecloud download rate is at 50 kb’s p sec more or less. what is in these days a bit low, but ok, it’s free so I won’t complain, haha.
will let you know what I think of the mod, I just thought I will write this first down in a comment to Manual_Monaro’s comment of not being able to download it at all.
SPY
just finished this and even though it ended alittle abrupt,it was fun, gonna go back and look around some. would like to see more from this group.
I have the same feeling than Goddess Brilliant start and after you have to follow a path restricited by water or after by wood plate from house to house, then it’s time for a sewer and a ride in a quite approximative maze full of blocking stuffs.
After you good to a kind of desafected warehouse/hospital with a major repetitive gameplay…I will consider this mod as good and enjoyable for arround 1 hour but it’s far away to ne a must. So
Oh joy! I’ve finally been able to download this.
A member on the Interlopers forum said the huge download size (In comparison to the mod’s actual length.) is due to a tone of un-needed files. I’ve been looking through the ‘dawn” directory, and yes, there does appear to be a heap of crap that could’ve been originally fleshed out. I’m not a mapper or anything, (So I might be completely wrong.) but there’s at least 90MB of un-needed data. (Almost as much as the whole compressed .zip!)
As I said, I could be wrong, so I’ll experiment and see if I’m right. For now, I’m firing this up for play through!
It may have been sparsely detailed and somewhat inorganic in the outdoor areas, but I still enjoyed it. The gameplay made up for these issues. The map flowed well from one area to the next. There was never any confusion as to what I was supposed to do next. The progression through each map was pretty clever. The voice work was also surprisingly good (I usually cringe a bit when I hear custom voice work in mods). There were a few other problems, but none of them lingered in my mind.
Well, I,ve gotta say its really not a bad mod at all except I seem to be stuck now. Spoilers alert: Right after the airboat part starts and you have to open the gate to enter into the canals. The Chopper is down (although I gotta say it took a while). There is no where to go in the canals. Straight is blocked and the right turn is a dead end. Did I miss something or is there a script that didn’t trigger? I searched all around and I am definately stuck. Oh and so far its definately
Cygnus if I have it right you arrive after traveling thorugh the canal maze at a place where a friend is talking a little with you, you cannot continue there with the boat you need to open the fence and continue by foot
No… I have JUST entered the canals and come to the cars piled up blocking the way right inside the gate. That’s where I am stuck. There seems to be nowhere else to go. What gives?
Hmmm… I can say I played this through start to finish. For some reason there was no option to choose difficulty… but it seemed pretty easy. I only died a couple of times. The level design was pretty sparse and bland visually but still fairly fun to play around. The hospital was creepy enough though perhaps a few more lights wouldn’t have gone amiss.
Voice acting was actually very good.
The helicopter battle was tedious though, as was the start where you’re just swimming down a winding river. It could have been improved with a few extra soldiers shooting at you.
I’m surprised, after seeing the credits, that it took so many people to make such a basic mod.
OK I got it finally…a trigger didn’t hit for it to load the next map and I had to go back to a previous savegame to get it to load right. It was probably my computer and not the mod though as my computer has been acting…”Tired”… lately. Probably time to replace the HD and processor as those are the only hold outs since way back when.
Anyway it was a decent mod although relatively easy. I liked the hospital and especially liked the “floater” in the part with the elevator shaft. I also had to laugh at the end during bullet time because I actually put down two metro police and got to watch the weapons falling from their hands as it faded to black. All in all a good mod with only a few lighting and texture errors in it overall. I did enjoy it and feel it would probably would have gotten better ratings except that its timing for release was bad to be right on the heels of Minerva’s part three.Hopefully that won’t discourage the RAGE crew from doing a “Mid-day Mod” (sic).
I agree fully with what Matt Glanville said above, I couldn’t have said it better. I enjoyed playing this mod, but the lenght of it was very disapointing. when I installed it I did see all the bsp files and hoped for many hours of fun, but the first 3 maps I finished within the first 5 minutes or so.
and although I liked the zombies and headcrabs the first time I played HL2(2 years ago now or so), there realy anoying now, there much to simple to kill with the crowbar that it is not fun at all anymore, and most of this mod is filled with those enemies.
also did the first half of the mod look MUCH better as the other half. seemed that you guys took the time for making the first part. and I also was surpriced to see that so many people worked on this mod, I expected better then. still, it was a fun hour to play it. so, I don’t say Play it now !!, I keep it on a Consider it. I give it a 5 out of 10.
leon (SPY-maps)
SM mod team
Leon, that’s something I forgot too about the maps. Why were the maps broken down into such small chunks?! Especially when the use of fog means you can’t see much at a time. It’s not exactly tough on the computer.
See Episodes 1 and 2 for how to add some more interesting gameplay mechanics to regular old zombies and headcrabs!
Actually, a very good mod that had the (mis)fortune of coming on the heels of Metastasis and prior to HL2 Ep2. This appears to be a university classroom effort, like some others that we’ve seen, but it feels like the most polished I’ve seen from such (remember that these are high school and college age developing this).
Overall, I really enjoyed it. Yes, the first river map could have been tighter and/or I would have liked to have gone along the winding paths on the cliff. And yes, zombies and headcrabs are getting old. But the gameplay was spot on, with lots of set pieces to drive you forward. I was actually pleasantly surprised to find the mod continue beyond the Traptown area.
I had some framerate issues in the canal with the helicopter, but those evened out after I entered the sewers. And the hospital was just daunting enough to inspire some chills.
A waste of time if you ask me. All I can remember was zombies, zombies, zombies and darkness. The first part was OK (the swamp/old town part). But it wasn’t any challenge at all. It also had a lot of cliches, like headcrabs/zombies in dark corners and/or in vents.
Then all of the sudden, I was in this small city. I could see two appartment buildings, but nothing more.
It seems very odd, because just minutes ago, I was in the middle of nowhere. Then I’m in this hospital… filled with hundredes of zombies *sigh*.
I should mention that I had to use the flaslight ALL the time inside that hospital. Which was just frustrating.
Througout the entire game, the enviroment was mostly very empty and blocky.
Those tunnel parts didn’t contain anything, not even some pipes or vents…
Sorry, but this wasn’t any fun mod. However, if you would like to spend 15 mintues of your life, killing zombies and headcrabs then go a head and download this mod!
For the rest of you…
This one had some good parts like the western town setting, but then it had some ugly parts, like the hospital. There was not nearly enough action in this and was way to slow. There was long walks and too much time between the fighting, and all there was to fight was zombies and headcrabs. There was a few combine at the start but only a few. The maps did look good but this one , for me ,was just too slow. Also, the ending was not good. Too abrupt for my taste. We should be able to go out fighting, not trapped like a rat. It’s worth playing but no rush.
Very good mod. Didn’t get stuck anywhere and didn’t need to cheat. Only problem, Tooo short. But GOOD mod. BRAVO! 7/10 scale only because of how short it was. Otherwise higher rating…
I’ve updated this post with new screenshots and download linsk to the recently updated file.
I enjoyed this mod. Was much easier to play the second time, of course (mostly the hospital didn’t creep me out as much).
I loved the surprise in the swamps.
I don’t mind that this was short. I just hope the team does another one!
“End of the line, Zombie!” THUD!…fade to black.
I think that line is the best. Other than that, the mod had some good parts, and some boring parts. This mod had a lot of potential and the cliffhanger ending gave the impression that the story might continue at some later date….three and a half years later,…hmm…I guess not.
Dawn is a mod that I assume is named after that graffiti from Half-Life 2. It has some custom graphics and voice acting, both of which are good. It even has an intro which is very cool.
Dawn is a short mod but it’s very fun in my opinion. There’s basically only two levels, the swamp and the hospital basement/sewer. The swamp is very good in my opinion. Very atmospheric and interesting. It’s like Ravenholm except in a swamp. I like Ravenholm a lot and I also tend to like swamp levels despite how rarely I see them. I love this level, the graphics, the atmosphere, the sound and most importantly the gameplay. Therre’s some cool nonlinear bits and puzzles as well as a lot of zombie action. There’s a few combine but not as many. It ends in some rebel’s house because he smacks you on the head thinking you’re a zombie. The only way I can think of that he would assume this is that you just killed a bunch of zombies in a swamp and therefore smell like one.
The other level is not really my cup of tea. A bit too dark for me, kind of Lowlife from Episode One. I dislike that level and this one. Some people like that level and I assume they would like this one. The only problem other than being too dark is that it does not have enough autosaves so make sure to save often. It has some nice moments though, like that fast zombie battle.
I like this mod and recommend it to anyone who likes fighting zombies.

Been playing some of the mods that have popped up in the comments feed recently, I guess they are mostly the ones that JellyBeanDude has been reviewing!
This is a mod split between two different environments, a shanty town in a dark swamp and a sewer/hospital location. The first part is by far the most enjoyable gameplay-wise and is clearly based on Ravenholm, albeit sadly lacking the Gravity Gun. There are some nice little set pieces and exploration segments. The latter part is not so fun, and is almost completely devoid of lighting, which added to the Half-Life 2 flashlight system (rather than the better Episode 2 version) makes it very annoying as you have to wait to recharge aux power.
The graphics are okay considering the age of the mod. Some areas are particularly sparse, the worst offender being a brief airboat chase. It can also be hard to tell which doors are usable as they are all brush-based. Then again these problems are made up for by some pretty good voice acting even though there is not much of a story.
Dawn is a fairly good mod overall, certainly not a must-play, but worth a shot if you don’t mind a lot of Zombie combat and some basic visuals.

Downloaded and installed it, tried to run it, and it goes through the valve logo fine. Then you hear a ‘ding’ and it crashes out, no error message, nothing. Anyone have any ideas how to get this to work at all?
Kinda boring. First three maps drag.
