Chemical Existence

for Half-Life

28th August 2005

Sci- Fi Single Player First Person Shooter Games Half Life 2 Doom 3 Far Cry Unreal UT2004 Quake Mods
About

Story
Chemical Existence puts you in the role of Reece Max whom simply is in the wrong place at the wrong time. He gets mixed up with fighting gangs, evil corporations and mutated creatures…

Gameplay
Chemical Existence will be based on fun rather than realism; (like we said before… so many other games do that so well already). You will have to think an extra time before you attack your target, since every enemy acts different, some might even decide to help you out…

Sci- Fi Single Player First Person Shooter Games Half Life 2 Doom 3 Far Cry Unreal UT2004 Quake Mods

Levels
Chemical Existence features many different styles and environments. Fight your way through cruel ghettos, get through china town and fight off gangs in the deadly sewers beneath the city. Cross the river by boat, the woods by jeep and find your way to the mysterious chemical plant where strange mutated creatures roam free…
There are 11 unique and detailed levels in the final version.

Weapons
The weapons are both familiar “classics” (implemented in new and unique ways though) like our Sniper rifle and pistol, and totally new inventions like the “Lump of wood” and the Assault cannon. The weapons aren't 100% “realistic” (so many other TCs/mods/games are doing this fine already), all the weapons are instead intended to be useful, and most of all. Fun to use!

Enemies
Chemical Existence includes a lot of different enemies to give you a most challenging experience. Everything between street gangs, snipers and paid of police officers to mutated creatures or humans. You’ll also encounter evil corporation soldiers and agents along your way. From the moment you start and to the very end you will have to change tactics for each new enemy you meet. The enemies take advantage of their environment, so watch out! Also if you're playing smart you might not have to take on all of the enemies… If, for example you meet a gang and some police officers., why not just let them fight it out among themselves.
There are around 10 totally new enemies, with tons of scripted sequences and animations!

Multiplayer
Even though Chemical Existence is mainly a single player experience, multiplayer won’t be forgotten. There will be some totally new deathmatch only levels for your enjoyment and you will be able to use all of the single player weapons to spread destruction. We also included several new player models.

This is a nice one I played a while ago. It also has a patch to apply to it. At the time I played it, the latest patch was 1.0.1 (ce101), which I have in my archives. You may want to check the author’s website for that, and also post here the latest patch, whichever version it is.

  2. I’ve updated the post to include screenshots and other infomation, including a link to the patch.

  3. Christian

I have recently replayed it, there is a tip: at the begining, the playing area is WAY too dark. There is a ladder to find, which you CANNOT see with usual video settings.

  4. thinhle115

    a really amazing adventure.

  5. adam

i shot this mod in the head, when I broke a box and it said “Don’t hurt the box, it has feelings too” then everyone looks like square headed freaks!

that don’t happen with SD Azure Sheep does it?

    X( no.

  6. heyzors

Why is it that some I can never install some mods to the right place. And of course…this looks like one of the better ones. Someone please just respond cause I’d especially like to play this mod. No one ever responds to the other ones!!

  7. Christian

Just running the exe works fine, for me.
I cannot see what the problme is.

  8. heyzors

So Christian…u can see it in your steam games list? I cant. And when I try to play it from the game startup it says im missing something even though Ive downloaded it numerous time from numerous sites. I think it says Im missing the half-life.exe or something like that.

  9. AI

Heyzors, I have a question for you, are you trying to run CE from the HL that’s included with HL2 or the stand alone HL from Sierra?? I tried installing it from my archive files and it worked just fine for me! I don’t think it’s made for the Steam setup??

  10. Christian

I do not use Steam, only the old fashion custom games….

  11. heyzors

Im trying the one from HL2(although it isnt on the source engine). All the other games I play work in that folder and dont work in the Seirra one. Ill try Seirra now though and see if it works. Cross your fingers!

  12. heyzors

No luck. This is very annoying.

  13. heyzors

OMG!!!!!!!I have no idea what to do!!!!!How did you install it Phillip?

  14. heyzors

Actually, Im pretty sure I have everything I need except the hl.exe. Does anyone know where I can get that? It didnt come with the installation of half-life from steam or chemical existance or the patch!

  15. AI

Sorry to hear it still don’t work for you, I’ve got both versions of HL, that is the game of the year version and the vannilla version, and I found some of the custom games and/or maps don’t work with the G.O.T.Y. version!! Make sure you have the update hl1110.exe installed also! This site is a treasure house of great stuff, it’s a shame if you can’t enjoy ’em!!!!

  16. heyzors

Does anyone know what a PF file is? I think I found the files, but I’m not sure. I dont know how to open a PF file nor do I know what it is.

I also want to apologize if I’m spamming. I just really want to play this game!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. Carolyn

This is a new glitch in my mod experience…no keyboard response. I got it installed and went to options and click on the keyboard tab and the field is blank. No key controls are listed at all and I cannot move my character…the standard keys..w,d,s,a etc. have no effect. Any ideas?

    1. cyper

I had the same issue. Did you also install the steamfix? if you did, I found the instead of installing to my half-life directory, it made a seperate folder called username and put it in there. You need the steamfix because it has the config in it. Just grab the ce dir from username and put it in the half life dir.

  18. Christian

Missing or corrupt config.cfg in the mod directory?

Check if there is one, copy from other HL folder is needed.

  19. heyzors

I dont have one in the half-life folder or the chemical existence one although half-life works fine. I wonder whats wrong. Maybe its the startup but that probably isnt it. hmmm……….

  20. heyzors

Maybe its the filesystem dll. Does anyone know what that is?

  21. Christian

My last answer was for Carolyn’s question πŸ˜‰

  22. heyzors

Well do you hagve any advice for me anyway?

  23. Carolyn

No config.cfg files anywhere in Half Life. What else can I try. I think I will delete it and reinstall it.
    Thanks for trying to help.

  24. Carolyn

I uninstalled CE and deleted the zip file and then downloaded it again. I installed it in the right directory as it is showing up in my third party games list. Then I unzipped the patch file and copied those files into the CE directory. I still have the same problem…no keyboard function.

  25. Christian

I have never used Steam, and do not want to for a few reasons, so I do not know the details of how it is installed, and therefore cannot help there.
My installion is the original HL from very fist release, patched to last release for it, which did not include Steam.

Th only thing I could sugesst, which may be inconvenient to you, is a clean reinstall of your copy of HL (NOT HL2), without steam if you can, patched to same version.

  26. AI

Yes here is some good advice —> Stop trying to run the HL1 mods with the Steam HL1 source, in HL2 —> Remove your Serria HL1 and reinstall it and only run these mods from there!! I hooked up my “OLD” IBM Aptiva 400mhz machine, with only 64meg ram and they all run fine! this is the only logical advice that I can give you. Anyone else?????

  27. Carolyn

    Heyzors,
Any luck installing? I ran the exe file and it wanted to install it in Sierra. I didn’t do that but installed it in C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\mysteamaccoutusername\half-life\ce
It loads and runs fine except for one small problem…I can’t move my character and there are no keyboard controls shown in the options menu. Let me know if you get it installed and running. I’m so bummed bacause I really want to play this mod.

  28. heyzors

Carolyn, at least you can play the mod. If I were you, I would reinstall the game. Before you do that turn your brightness up because I remember hearing something about need a high brightness at the beginning of the game. If not, try reinstalling it.

I on the other hand have come to the conclusion that something is wrong with my computer. If anyone has any ideas, please post to help me (and Carolyn if my 2 suggestions don’t work)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. heyzors

A.I. Just for the record I dont have any files for the sierra HL and I dont know where to get them. I only have it for steam.

  30. heyzors

    Anyone? Help.?

  31. heyzors

YAY! I finally figured it out. Each person downloads files differently on their computer so I downloaded the mod on my friends computer and sent it to myself through x-fire.

  32. Ltemup

I’ve got the patch but on starting the game with or with out it goes to the screen that says loading and just stays there?

  33. I think the patch is only needed if you play through a steam account

  34. BOB

lets hope theres a sequal this game is awsome!!

  35. collin

this mod is crap. the enemy AI is terrible. you shoot them and they just stop and stare at you. some of the characters were horribly done. wolfenstein weapons were cheesy. a diarrhea mess of a game. the developer should have spent more time on it.

  36. Paul Denton

Hey guys,I’ve got the non steam version of HL1,when I try to start a new game, It shows the loading screen, but does not actually load anything. The tutorial scenario works fine, but I’m unable to start a new game.Any suggestions??

  37. Paul Denton

Hey guys,I’ve got the non steam version of HL1 (v 1.1.1.0),when I try to start a new game, It shows the loading screen, but does not actually load anything. The tutorial scenario works fine, but I’m unable to start a new game.Any suggestions??

  38. hey I had the same key problem so I placed my own .cfg file in the CE foldier. now 10 cookies to the one that tells me why is the .cfg canceled when I un-invert the mouse, or even why if the .cfg has a regular mouse setting the game invert’s it, plus adds 20 of sensibility wich I thik is just to add up to teh flavor… in enycase the key problem is solutioned by plasing the hl.cfg file in the ce foldier and then on the consele just put “exec hl.cfg” (hl is and example my .cfg is named NoD.cfg) now if enybody can answer my question I will feel happy :p oh by the way the “why do you hurt the poor box” it could be solved by using an unbreakable box ( and I think I played this before long long time ago.

    Play It Now!

holy shit on a stick πŸ™‚ . ok my problem is WHEN I START A NEW GAME SAYS :cannot open solditer.mdl file…. , any help guys?,who hapened reply πŸ™‚ but from my steam friend I heard is ok so I give it play it NOW!, but I want a reply PLZ!

    1. jonboy19

I had the exact same problem. I found a way that works. If you have half life on steam, then just download the original file, forget about the patch, install it in your common/half life folder, and run it like you would any other mod. I ran it like that…zero issues with the game models. Hope that helps.

  40. Zikri

Help, when I played this mod, some of the models are gone, about almost 78% of them, please help me.

  41. Zikri

Allright, only a quarter of them, that includes soldier.mdl, bum.mdl, etc.

  42. Justin

Will I be able to play this without steam?

  43. I’m trying to play this with Steam, and having the blank keyboard tab problem, and I can’t move. aqnyway to fix this ?

  44. Gilfrarry

With PakExplorer, go in the mod folder and open ce\pak0.pak. Rename or delete the \gfx\shell\kb_act.lst file.

As a second option, you could do a search on your Half-Life folder to try to find a kb_act.lst file from another mod. Create a folder in “ce” called “gfx,” and a folder ‘shell” inside the “gfx” folder. Copy kb_act.lst into ‘shell.’

  45. deleting “kb_act.lst” did the trick. Thanks a lot, Gilfrarry

  46. I’m in the subway, and there is this tank shooting at me and keeps killing me….I don’t think I can destroy it either…..so is there a way to pass this, or do I just run and pray that I don’t die ? πŸ™

  47. Zikri

Look, I seem to have post this but Help, when I played this mod, some of the models are gone, about almost 78% of them, would some one please help me.

  48. Kyle

    Broken links! Oh teh noez!

    1. There’s a file now, but until it’s updated you’ll also need to get the patch at GameFront.

You can also get the walkthrough at the Internet Archive.

  49. Ten Four Reviews
Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

Many of you may be reading this review with the questions, β€œIs it worth the download?” and β€œWas it worth the wait?” The answer to both questions is a resounding yes. Chemical Existence, by Red Genesis Entertainment, is undeniably among the best of the best add-ons for Half-Life.

CE is billed as a total conversion, meaning nothing but the engine remains from Half-Life. And indeed it feels like a different game, much more so than other massive mods such as They Hunger 2, Rebellion, and Redemption. New stuff abounds in Chemical Existence. There are new adversaries, new weapons, new music, new textures, etc., hence the complete separation from the Half-Life world. You assume the role of Reece Max, an everyday fellow who of course ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Most of your enemies are human in this episode, but there is quite a variety of them. You will face street punks, soldiers, and the ‘corporation’ (my favorite is the assault-cannon-toting black-suit-wearing Cockney chick). Throw in some tough ‘bosses’ and a couple of non-human enemies and you have a completely new horde of foes to conquer. Enemy variety and placement are definitely one of the strong points here. And some of them are pretty challenging – CE is not an easy episode to complete.

To deal with these new foes, you have a completely new arsenal at your disposal. You start out with the dreaded board-with-a-nail-in-it, and you acquire such arms as a laser pistol, sniper rifle (complete with night vision and range indicator), and, my personal favorite, the poison dart gun. For the most part, the weapons are well modeled and animated, and are quite fun since they are all different from HL’s weapons.

The entire Red Genesis team did a great job in making this episode. The voice acting is truly outstanding (and pretty damn funny if you hang around some of the characters for a while). There is a bit of new music, and this was also very well done. The new graphics give CE a new and different look. I thought the overall game design was great as well; CE is challenging, engrossing, and the gameflow is exemplary. In addition, there is an fgd file available for Worldcraft at the Red Genesis site, allowing users to create their own single- and multi-player maps set in the CE world.

One thing I really liked about CE is the clever use of sequences. There is an impressive opening sequence that relates the story to you, and sprinkled throughout the episode are other well-designed notable sequences. Furthermore, the story is related to you through the characters (and Reece’s own speech) as you progress. The most notable sections were the two exciting vehicle sequences in Chemical Existence – they were well-designed, well-made, and just plain fun. Memorable sequences like these truly make CE stand out.

Chemical Existence does have a number of weaknesses. I thought the map design could use some improvement. While the maps certainly convey the ‘feel’ of CE’s setting, some of the outdoor areas looked especially dull, due to both design and texture choice. The architecture overall is decent, but not impressive, and the lighting could use some work. I also noticed a few areas with poor texturing. However, the maps are very well designed from a gameplay perspective – r_speeds were never a problem throughout the episode.

I also thought a couple of the models/skins (of both weapons and characters) could use some touching up. And there is a dream sequence which doesn’t quite fit in with the rest of the episode (although it was very well done and quite memorable itself).

Some of the changes in CE were not quite intuitive. For example, there is a bar at the bottom of the screen that I think measures your stamina or strength, as it increases when you jump a lot or use some of the more powerful weapons. But this is not explained to you. And I went through about half of CE before I realized that the machine gun has a flashlight attached to it (I didn’t read the weapons explanations since I prefer to be surprised). The sniper rifle also takes some practice, but there is a supplied training course available for it. But it would have been really nice if the training course had explained the stamina meter and the flashlight as well…

Chemical Existence was nearly three years in the making from the original concept. This was one Half-Life add-on that I’ve kept an eye on from its early days. I am glad that it’s finally here, and glad that it lived up to my expectations. There were some minor weaknesses, but none were overwhelming by any means. The Red Genesis team set out to gain experience and some publicity in creating Chemical Existence, and in the process they produced one of the most impressive Half-Life single player episodes available.

I am also having trouble with playing this mod. I have no keyboard response and cannot change the input, as nothing is there to change. I have the patch for Steam as well. I would do as Gilfrarry said, but for some reason I can’t delete the “kb_act.lst” in Pak Explorer. I can find “pak0.pak” but whenever I try to open it, it says that Pak Explorer has “encountered a problem and needs to close.” Basically, it crashed, and I am unable to delete the file. Any suggestions on what to do?

  51. Play It Later

I remember getting this mod back in the WON days and recently replayed it to relive that niche nostalgia. It’s not great but I appreciate the custom models and sounds (the VO is hilarious!). Worth playing but it’s definitely a product of it’s time.

  52. Link broken or link invisible. Maybe my glasses cannot see it.

  53. Personal Favourite

I installed the REMOD. This one works on steam 100% and no keyboard problem. Some graphics are even improved. It includes the training room, must be found apart and one Bonus Level.
This game reminds me of Retro and many PlayStation 2 Games. I like it a lot. This guy made a jewel. And comic pictures are the best idea because you can create levels faster rather than looking for macro detailing in every map.
