Reclamation

for Half-Life 2

17th June 2007

Author’s Note

“Reclamation is a single player level created using Half-Life 2 that I made during my final two terms at The Guildhall. We had to create a level design document detailing our plan for the level and then do a presentation of the level to our faculty and other students every milestone (once a month).

The idea for this level was a vertical climb which spiralled around a central area. So I could keep reusing the same space and minimize the amount of geometry. The level takes place in a factory setting where the player goes between the outer area and then later into the guts of the facility.”

    Review:
One time more passing through The Guildhall at SMU made me find another interesting short but sweet release This time you will travel trough an industrial complex in a fight and puzzle mix to find and deliver Dog.

Design is well put together in a slithly above average architecture and design. The action is mostly indoor. The layout is made, in my opinion, in a little repetitive texturing but it fits well to the industrial theme.

Progression is obvious in a linear way but mostly oriented as a maze through lot’s of upper floor. ambush especially manhacks (this gave me a new idea of gaming using the gravity gun to catch them and trow them on combine…quite efficient) that will give you a lot of challenge increasing till the final central command where you will need to battle against combine to save Dog. The whole progression is well mixed with some puzzle (pillars getting down, this one was certainly influenced by some Duke Nukem experience) and console activating button. Everything seems obvious but makes it really enjoyable.

    Conclusion:
Another good dig out of grave release from The Guildhall at SMU . The author who did other interesting stuff especially for Call of Duty comes this time with well action packed mission that really deserve you attention. Get it as soon as possible and you will be happy with it.

  2. Play It Now!

This is a well-constructed level, with plenty of action and a few puzzles. However, I felt there was something missing, something I can’t quite explain. It’s definitely better than a lot of Half-Life 2 levels available but I didn’t really enjoy playing it.

That said, I didn’t really enjoy Minerva: Metastasis 2! I feel it was too formulaic, too many “rules” followed.

None of the engagements with the enemy really had me excited, except perhaps the last one. So the build up was good. There were perhaps too many Manhacks but stuff like that is so personal that it’s almost impossible to get right.

The lone Zombie seemed out of place as did some of the ammo crates but no more than usual.

I only encountered 1 technical problem and that was along the walkway over the entrance, one floor wasn’t built correctly (I’m no tech guy, so I can’t tell you exactly what was wrong, I just know that a floor should be solid!

I didn’t particularly enjoy the movement obstacles but that’s because I’ve played too many Unreal levels with them in!

You can already see my recommendation and are maybe thinking why has he recommend PLAY IT NOW! when all I seemed to have said was negatives things but it is a good level and you will probably enjoy it.

    My Recommendation

  3. I can’t believe this has been download nearly 100 times and nobody has even added an anonymous recommendation. Shame on you!

  4. I’ve downloaded it, just haven’t taken the opportunity to play it yet.

  5. Somethin is messed up with my HL2 install I can only play HL1 mods.

  6. Play It Now!

I enjoyed it. I thought it was very well designed. There were some spots that I was wandering around a little bit trying to figure which way to go and some structures are so dark, it took me a few times to find the right path. There was one ladder that I thought was very hard to see but in the end, was so obvious.

I enjoyed the maze style layout and thought it was well put together.

Most of the enemy action wasn’t that hard except there were way too many manhacks for my taste. The end battle was a little harder as you face more foes.

I found the most difficult areas for me was just simply being able to see where I was going and going the right way without getting zapped or stomped to death.

  7. Play It Now!

A little dark and confusing but overall I liked it.The one ladder could of had a bit more light around it so it would be easier to spot and lose a few manhacks but as stef said they do cut down the combine pretty good.

  8. Play It Now!

A different kind of map this, with plenty of features that are uncommmon in other maps. The manhacks are troublesome, but as long as you have the gravity gun they can be dealt with — unlike in one part of Leon’s C2A mod when all you had was a machine gun, no suit and limited ammo!

I hope the author keeps his promise and delivers a sequel.

…and a crowbar, (with that alone you could kill them all MikeS). but I agree, it was a bit to hard, the more so when people played CtoA on normal, or even hard, it was ment to be played on easy.

    but enough about CtoA,
i also loved this one, well pased action and specialy the end was very challanging.
realy well done. just one bug I noticed, if it is one, that is. somewhere in the factory there is beneath you a huge “barrel” placed half in the ground, with in it yellow water, at least it looks like it. didn’t know where to go from there and therefore I jump in to it, just to notice that it didn’t kill me, the “water’. what I expected, but there was also no way out of there.
beside this small issue I realy enjoyed playing it.

    thanks,

    leon

  10. I did that too Spy! While it didn’t kill me, it surely brought my health down to almost nill with a loud thump just like you were jumping to the ground. It doesn’t act like normal liquid meaning you can’t swim around in it, lose oxygen, or get out of it so I highly recommend DON’t DO IT.

    Play It Now!

Nice gameplay, well done, not difficult, quite amusing; a bit short!

  12. Play It Now!

A highly enjoyable mod with clever use of the space and some very nice looking architecture.

    Nothing else to say except…

    Maybe?

Not bad, but not particularly great either. The map was nicely laid out and kept you playing different parts of the same area in an interesting route, but generally wasn’t too hot aesthetically and there weren’t really any interesting things going on.

    Play It Now!

Very good map as far as it went. Well designed nice balance between combat and finding your way around. Good design if limited surroundings but all was very well constructed.
Unfortunately it appears to be another part of something that won’t get completed, shame lots of potential.

    Maybe?

    I thought it was average.

another broken download here, yet with no alternative download to be found

what is it with all these broken downloads?

did you forget moving some files after those 6309305 million server changes, that happened on this site, phillip?

  17. Download link still broken 🙁

      1. Thanks for fixing the link! I just played it and really enjoyed it 🙂

  18. Play It Now!

Good clean map. Nothing to stumble trip over. Good to see Dog once more. No snags but enough game play to keep me hopping. Thanks for the fun.

  19. Maybe?

Good looking. Some platforming, not my favorite. Seems like a great looking meal with no flavor. Good for a couple of play throughs.
