  1. Phillip says Avoid It!

Sorry, I wanted to give this a MAYBE recommendation but can’t find anything worth recommending. At first glance the map is just a jumble of walls and textures but it actually has a nice layout, although that’s not enough to redeem it.

The gameplay is pretty boring and the only interesting thing is the wall of water that you can “climb”.

Play it if you must but don’t expect anything exciting.

I found crossbow ammo, but no crossbow. Did you find it? Did anybody get to the Vortigaunt without cheating?

  2. Maybe?

I don’t agree with Avoid It.

This is a bit of fun. I thoroughly enjoyed it for a couple of minutes.
    A comic interlude.

No Crossbow for the bolts. Use as boomerangs, maybe?
No RPG for RPG ammo” either. For throwing, perhaps?

The Vortigaunt. Yes I noclipped over. It was very pleasant, said good afternoon and powered up my suit. A proper gentleman I reckon.

    it’s a Maybe for the 3 stars.
5 stars for the sense of humour.
Less 4 stars for the graphics
Plus 1 star for the Hunter.
Plus another star for the high dive from the top of a very tall building. The water was lovely.

    Relax and give it whirl.

    1. Plus 1 star for the Hunter.

Just adding a Hunter gives it one star?

I think something important to ask yourself when reviewing a map like this –

“Did the author do anything make this fun?”

It’s a serious question. Consider everyone’s My First Doom Map. The empty room with a hundred Imps and Cyberdemons. Yes, on some level it’s mindless and fun. But what did the author really do? They made a big square box and placed enemies in it. The rest was the AI and the core gameplay Doom already supplied. Truth be told, you could make a big square box in Source, slap a texture on it, and populate it with a Hunter or two and it would be somewhat fun because the Hunter AI is so clever. But there’s nothing the author did to achieve that – it was all Valve.

        1. You’re right, of course, Kyouryuu. I can but agree.

Surely though this is not a map to be taken seriously!
It’s just a bit of fun by the mapper.
I had a bit of fun playing it because I did not take it seriously.
I know KTHedgehog had fun mapping it by just throwing some fun stuff into the box and then released it for us to play if we manted.
          And why not?.

Am I being too subtle? I had hoped that my little comment and the way I wrote it would be easily seen as ‘tongue in cheek’.

          1. Manted? my W inverted!!

  3. No thank you. In all honesty, I barely give these tiny ” done to death ” kill everything maps a second glance anymore. Your too generous Philip.

I prefer it when Phillip gives out AVOID ITs as opposed to Maybes… it’s his opinion after all and I feel he has grown soft.

just something I wanted to say.

    I can’t redeem this.

This is one of those “first maps” that you download on accident because it’s in a map line-up on a multiplayer server, only it’s single player and you should have just looked at the screenshots before downloading.

  6. Avoid It!

It’s a small map with some enemies to kill. I can’t really say any more than that.

The texturing is poor and the buildings themselves don’t seem to make much sense. I had some issues with the water on the lower level, submerse yourself to watch the level vanish before your eyes! (I beleive that there is some issue with water reflections being used on more than one level in the map, maybe this is related?)

I also had some issues with sound in the level, I had some sounds such as the suit “ammunition depleted” and some of the enemy death sounds but I must have had the worlds best silencer fitted to my weapons as I couldn’t hear a single shot. (This could be my issue as opposed to the map though, has anyone else experienced this? – On second checking it does appear to be something to do with me – does anyone have any suggestions?)

  7. Maybe?

If approached as a bit of fun then it’s ok.
What I have a problem with is not knowing what it is tour s’posed to do?
    And when is it finished?
I hate that I think maybe I missed somthing!
And no, the only way I could get to the vort was to noclip – and he just said “Freeman”.
    A bit of fun?

    Phil

  8. Maybe?

I’m just making my way back thru all the pages of maps and playing some maps that got some overall lower ratings to see which of those I hadnt played or rated myself.
Not much here really but I would love to see the water jumps/dives as escape used as a part of some larger map/mods
