Beastie

for Half-Life

25th January 2006

About

Kyle recently sent me this file and I had never heard of it. Eager to play I fired up Half-Life and was pleasantly surprised. This map has lots of bad points but the good points easily outweigh the bad. There’s no story but the cut scenes are quite funny. The map was previously mentioned at Hangar 16 under New Blood but there was no review and no screenshots. It is also available from a Polish Half-Life site.
I recommend you download it and play it but don’t expect it to take more than ten minutes to finish it. Don’t forget to tell me what you think of it. If anybody has any information about this map please email me.

You have no idea how pleased I am that you enjoyed it. Heh.
    Fun little map, isn’t it?

  2. Is it possible that you sir, are the author?

  3. Kyle

    Hah. I wish. XD
But no, Im not the author. I have no talent for these things. I still havent figured out how to make a Doom 2 level. Heh.

I remember this one – there are so many older maps like this. Empty, pointless but I like the feel of them. I don’t know why – maybe it’s just the feel of nostalgia.

    😉

    I second erc.

    Play It Now!

Really good look and feel to this map. With his design skill, the author should do more.

In order to play this map, you just have to look at the screenshots and you’re done. 😀 😀

    Maybe?

A Spooky, but allmost empty atmosphere and few enemies in BIG rooms. Unfortunately I got no emotional entry to this short mod.

  9. Maybe?

Short map with more running than action, but the lightning is awesome, also some good architecture but unfortunately also confusing hallway/big room running.

    Pro’s:
    -Excellent lighting
-Some good level architecture (but also some boring-looking)
-Plenty of ammo (cause you won’t need all)

    Con’s:
    -Very short
    -Some poor-looking level design (unproportional)
-No story, weird scripts, also no puzzles
    -Way too less action

  10. Maybe?

Short but not bad. Some objects are disproportionate (like stairs) but it’s okay. The lighting is nicely done.

    Avoid It!

This isn’t the worst map in the world, but neither is it worth your time. The combat is straightforward and not too difficult, since the map is pretty spread out. Most of the areas suffer from ye olde overscaling, and are simply too big to look convincing. I also can’t agree that the lighting is attractive. It’s blocky and there’s little subtlety, which is actually can be a strength of Goldsource maps in the right hands. There is much worse out there of course, but this can’t really stand on its own as a worthwhile download.

  12. Maybe?

    Well, that was certainly… something.

There’s no point talking a lot about the map, since from what I’ve read, a lot of maps at the same time were like this. The environment is OK, the mapping was empty, but at least the combat was fun and the lighting wasn’t bad either. But other than that though, this map isn’t really life-changing.

Overall, if you have 5-10 minutes to spare on a HL1 map, then this is for you.

  13. Maybe?

Short and linear map, little boring

  14. Maybe?

If he don’t like to put enemies he could create a great environment. It’s possible to make a Half-Life without enemies, it would be a world full of imagination.
