Please suggest mods for future videos

12th February 2016

Recently, I have a seen a few videos about SP HL/HL2 mods and I don’t think they are very good (not that I think mine are), but they have a LOT of views. I think I can do better, not just better than the videos I currently produce (which are only uploaded streams and the new Minute Mods series) but also better than the ones I have seen.

I have created what I believe is the best resource for single player maps and mods and with regard to videos I am not doing a very good job of utilizing that resource.

What I would to start to do is create some videos that showcase some mods but use aspects other than the generic “Top 10 HL2 mods”. Well, I do want to do that, but I am sure there is a lot more I could do too.

One misconception people have is that I remember all the maps and mods I have played and can recite the locations, and story etc. I can’t. I really do have a terrible memory and there is only so many notes you can take before it becomes impossible to find something.

So I am asking readers for help.

Some Details

Initially, I would like to create three videos, each mentioning 3 or 4 mods. I prefer to keep the videos shorter and create more of them than have 10 in one video but only show a few moments worth of gameplay footage from each.

I would like you, in fact I NEED you to suggest mods and maps for the following videos:

1. Interesting gameplay mechanics
Currently I have Transmissions: Element 120 and Curse: Episodes. I am looking for a mod that had crows in it as one of the main enemies. If you looked at the crow for too long you died.

2. Atmospheric Settings.
I don’t have any obvious candidates for this video.

3. Epic Battles
This idea was discussed on the Half-Life sub-Reddit and I think it would make a good topic for a video.

Other Videos

I am open to all suggestions regarding other videos and if I could produce 4 videos a year that would be great.

I will also be producing a video for each entrant to the Hall of Honour, which will be like the Hall of Fame but for people.

Lastly, I also plan to create a Minute Mod and a longer showcase for each mapping challenge from this point forward.

Really lastly, I am looking for a collaborator for creating the videos. I have no doubt that with the right committed person, the videos would be better than if I tried to make them alone. If you are interested, please contact me. But please don’t be angry if I say “Thank you, but no thanks”. I need to find the perfect person for this.

  1. No thanks phillip 😉

    1. Sorry, I don’t understand.

      1. Unq

Thought he was being snarky but he is just pointing out the typo in the last paragraph. 🙂

        1. You were right. Fixed it now.

      2. You wrote: “but no thank” instead of no thanks or no thank you (I don’t know if this is intentional apologies if it is)

        1. Oh, okay, thanks. I’ve fixed it now.

  2. Mr. Walrus

Sounds like an excellent idea! I agree with your statements above: I think videos are underutilized at RTSL, and I also think you can make videos that are much better than most of those floating around on YouTube. Looking forward to them! I have a few (maybe a few too many) suggestions for atmospheric settings/mods:

    1. Mistake of Pythagoras
    2. Dear Esther
    3. G-String
    4. Random Quest
    5. The Intern’s Story
    6. Minerva: Metastasis
    7. Get a Life
    8. The Sprucecape Mod

  3. “Recently, I have a seen a few videos about SP HL/HL2 mods and I don’t think they are very good”

    Oh… Ok, I’ll stop 🙁

I would also suggest Random Quest for HL2 for atmosphere. It’s by the same guys who made The Citizen, but better off for not being tied down to Half-Life’s universe. They’re also working on a sequel at the moment.

    1. No, not you. I love your voice. I meant the compilation ones.

  4. BlazeHedgehog

For an atmospheric setting, how about Black Snow? An update was just released for it on Moddb that fixes the problems it had with the Steampipe stuff from a couple ears ago, and it’s EXTREMELY atmospheric, I think.

    1. Okay, I’ll check on that.

    2. Can’t believe I haven’t played this or added it to the site. It makes me feel I am doing a terrible job of staying up to date.

  5. Mission Improbable for atmospheric settings.

  6. Zekiran

For Atmosphere, in terms of ‘sticking with the Half Life 2 world’, Mission Improbable is so much fun as well as having the look and feel (at least that’s how I remember it) of any place you could visit along Highway 17.

And then just overall, I think Research and Development (in parts, probably) would be a lot of fun to watch you play.

  7. The “dont-look-at-crows-for-too-long” mod is called “Dissolution”.
I didn´t think it was really good, the guns were really weird.

    BUT!
The dev is working on a new mod, which is set in the same universe.
It´s called “Lunar Descent” and I´m a playtester.

    1. Okay, thanks for that information.

  8. I recommend Nightmare House 2. They have released a Steam-Pipe compatible version and it’s always been a favourite of mine.

  9. Mega Sean 45

I dunno if it’ll work, but give Riot Act a try. 😉 It was the first SP mod I’ve ever played!

  10. I recommend Midgaard for atmosphere. There are more atmospheric mods but it looks like they’ve already been mentioned.

  11. OJJ

    Underhell, definitely.
A bit long playthrough though 😛

  12. Regarding the video collaboration part.
I’ve done a lot of video production work in the past, and I’m well experienced with motion graphics, editing, among other things.

What are you looking for, specifically?

    1. I want to improve the production value. Look at how good the LG and VT videos look and I am not talking about the HD quality.

      1. I can help you out with that.
If you’d like, just send me an email and we can go from there.

        1. Thanks, I’ve sent you an email.

  13. I have a question about the next ville contest , can we have a map that is actually 2 maps with a command changing between them ?

    1. You are allowed to submit a maximum of two maps that are joined. I’m sorry, I don’t know what a command change is, but if the first maps leads to the second., then that’s fine.

      1. Thank you for clarifying , and yes I meant that the first maps leads to the second .

  14. How about some moods for Portal and Portal 2?
