  1. Phillip says Avoid It!

Sorry but maps like this shouldn’t be released. The author will not gain any useful feedback and it’s not worth playing.

The problem is due to the author’s ideas not their implimentation. Clearly they simply need to keep making amps and then deleting them. Keep going for a while and then release something that is worth the time of the player.

BTW, if you do play it, please tell me if you find the crossbow. I saw ammo for it but not the weapon itself. Perhaps it’s hidden.

Rooms + enemies not always fun.

    Personal Favourite

Phillip, I love your website because you take your time to upload and review, whatever few words you might use, these mods no matter their atrocities. I adore the fact that every modder, whether newbie or professional, has an equal chance at having their mod posted for all to see which they can improve upon.

Towards the mod — Everybody has to start somewhere, and this is proof of that. I’m marking this, with a very low-level of sarcasm, as a personal favorite simply because it’s crucial to the author’s learning process like I mentioned above. Perhaps other to-be modders would use this as an example to see what people don’t enjoy [visually]. I’m not sure if they’re there yet but if the author had more of an approach towards scripting-related entities, such a god-awful eyesore of a level would be somewhat decent in playability. I know I wouldn’t mind running up to the G-Man doing some crazy scripted_sequence moves on Alyx (but that’s what Gmod’s for, right?)

    Author: Go for tutorials.

PS. I couldn’t find the crossbow.

Sorry the above review does not make sense to me, guess I will need to go play this one.

    Play It Later

Great fun! Not a download and play now for sure.but play it when you have 10 minutes to spare.
As with most short maps, I did not find an end after finding Alyx

  5. Maybe?

I’m with tundra -it’s not that bad, and everyone has to start somewhere. (although I wouldn’t know a scripted related entity if I met one). And wholeheartedly agree with the comments re: the site. Marvelous! And I’m with Jasper, “cos if there’s not a proper ending, you think there is something else to do

    Think Twice

It’s boring! Running in a… ugh… surrealistic rooms and shooting a zombies and Combine soldiers – it’s neither original, nor interesting. The mapping is poor, and… Well, my advice to author: try to find editor for DooM-1. His mapping skills, seems so poor for second Half-Life, would be fascinating for the first DooM.

  7. Raven

Although I did not even play this map, I think it has to be kept in mind that not all mapwork is going to be at par with the few authors whose work we all admire and look forward to. But those guys are in an echelon class.
There is bound to be a huge chasm of knowledge absent from novice work, but I fear that we should not develop a reflex to be too harsh on the novice since we have ‘tasted the forbidden fruit” and develop a sense of: “now nothing else will satisfy’.
When kids are in grade 1 at school, we look for their achievements at that level, not compare them to grade 12 students. An honest critique, so that one may learn and improve, is always welcome by any up-and-coming artist, I am sure, but hurtful condemnation would be another story altogether. There is no encouragement in that.
I’m not saying that is the case here. I am simply saying it is something we might take care to be sensitive towards while expressing our honesty.

  8. Kyouryuu

You can say that, but what makes this map different from any other first-time work? Big, oversized rooms. Floating stairs. An overabundance of enemies. There are hundreds of maps just like this one.

  9. Raven

As I went through lengths to explain: there is nothing wrong with constructive criticism. Knowledge is effectively passed on in that way when a person has their mistakes clearly pointed out by a more knowledgeable person.

  10. Kasperg

*Note: this is a general comment, not about this map in particular.

While experience has a good part in how good one person can become at something, this isn’t always the issue. A map made by a total beginner isn’t full of blatant flaws just because the mapper is a beginner. You might be a rookie at using the editor, but everybody knows what a set of stairs looks like, how big are doors in relation to people, the difference between being inside or outside a building and a long etc. People also know lights usually come from the sun, fire, a lightbulb etc as oppossed to just out of thin air.
Those typical “first map” problems don’t forcefully have to go hand by hand with being a beginner mapper. It’s just that people think any file made in the map editor and compiled is automatically a map, and being lazy is ok as level design is just a hobby. That’s fine. But it’s not about experience, it’s about real dedication and will. Experience will only separate very good from excellent. Some people might spend 6 years mapping and not reach the level of a mapper who has been doing so for only two. It can happen.

  11. I’m having trouble Opening the console. I press shift/~ at the start of Half-Life 2 and nothing happens. No console. Am I doing something wrong?
I put the game in d:\steam\steamapps\(your account name)\half-life 2\hl2\maps. Right?

    Please advise….

    1. Black Dog, I don’t believe you need to press SHIFT, at least I don’t have to. You should also check the console option is checked in the options (Can’t remember exactly where and I can’t start HL2 atm, sorry)

  12. Found it’s under Keyboard/Advance options.
Phillip! to the rescue ,again. Thanks!!

    Avoid It!

I can sum this mod up in a few short words..”I gotta find alyx”
*Blam Blam Blam, Slam Thank you mam*
“I found Alyx!”*END*Terrible map, Lots of pointless rooms filled with enemies.. an overall disappointment..

  14. Play It Later

No story. Play it, it you want to have fun for 10 min.]
By the way I didn’t see no crossbow or crossbow ammo?

    Avoid It!

So many adjectives come to mind, like pointless and brainless how something like this ever escapes to waste the time and effort of others is beyond me.

don’t spend a second of your life ever thinking about downloading this one, if this was to be the last HL mod/mappack ever to be released, then still don’t play it. Avoid it at all cost.

  16. Think Twice

    Just a waste of time

    Avoid It!

…yep, a waste of time. What’s the point in giving it PERSONAL FAVORITE? tundra_cool… ? I don’t get it, use the rating system properly. It’s unfair to the author and the players, rating this thing this high. And no, it’s not okey to release something with this poor quality. I think there should be some sort of quality assurance on PlanetPhillip.

  19. Maybe?

I’m giving this map a maybe, even though it was fun. Maybe because there are several different ways you can play each combat. (Not that I’m going to go back and try each way…)

I didn’t appreciate getting Annabelle at the expense of the pulse rifle, but whatever. I never found the crossbow. I also had the ai_disable bug when I reloaded.

3 big areas + lots of the same enemy in each area, very short, abrupt end.
