December 2016 General Chat

4th December 2016

Hard to believe the end of 2016 is nearly upon us. Christmas is a mere 3 weeks away and of course I haven’t started shopping at all.

Releases have been a little quiet lately, but soon we’ll have Hard!Ville to play at least.

Any games you picked up during the Autumn Steam Sale? Any games on your wish list for Christmas? For my part, I grabbed Dishonored 2 but haven’t had time to play it yet.

Happy December!

What is this post?

Each month we create a “General Chat” post for readers to post whatever they want within the limits of being a family-friendly website.

Please don’t post reviews, questions or comments about maps and mods listed on the site – post them on the respective post – all those comments will be deleted. We do this to ensure that when a reader visits a map or mod page, all the information is in one place.

This Month’s old FPS game

Back in June 2014, Phillip started to use a poster from a classic Sci-Fi movie as the background for the post image. Starting in June 2016, we started to use images taken from old FPS games.

This month it is Tron 2.0 (2003).

It was a bit odd having a game released based on a then 11-year old movie that wasn’t hugely popular but did have a cult following. Nevertheless, Tron 2.0 was released in 2003 and it had the same cool look as the original 1982 movie Tron, and even included a couple of the original movie’s actors – and even some light cycle sequences. It ran on the Lithtech engine and remains a gorgeous unique-looking game even now.

  1. During the Steam sale I grabbed Tomb Raider (2013) GOTY and Lara Croft And The Guardian Of Light, but I should add that I like my games to be free from DRM, so I much prefer GOG. Autumn sale on GOG saw my pile of shame growing larger and larger, with titles like Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Crysis, FEAR 2, both Metro Redux games, Divinity 2 – Developer’s Cut, the third STALKER game, and Victor Vran.

Dishonored 2 sounds interesting, but the first one is still waiting to be played and I’m afraid my 2012 PC wouldn’t be good enough for the new one anyway.

I’m really looking forward to Hard!Ville. I’m not a mapper myself, but creating a hard mod, that is still fun (without just endless waves of enemies or simply unfair combat or confusing puzzles) must be very difficult. IMO there’s an extremely fine line between positively challenging/hard and negatively frustrating/tedious and I am really curious how many of these entries I will actually enjoy.

I am currently playing through all 40+ Villes and “Outland Route” from StriderVille already felt a bit like being in Hard!Ville …

  2. December: the month Phillip said he would state his final decision regarding RTSL. From the way the site’s been running for the past months, I’d say we’re in for good news.

I hope he doesn’t rebrand back to PlanetPhillip. It’s such a 90s thing, not to mention it would be a loss to the community if this site becomes more centered around Phillip (as much as I love you, Phillip) and not the showcase of modders and maps that it’s become.

      1. I may still revert back to PP branding but the content has always been the same: the showcasing of maps and mods.

  3. I didn’t grab anything during the Autumn sale, but i’m looking forward to the Winter sale!

I recently played the first Thief game, and I really want to grab the rest if I can! Well, maybe not the new one, but the other two seem great. I’m also very interested in a newish indie game VA-11 Bartender Action. I’ve barely seen anything about it save for a few screenshots, and a couple accolades. It looks great though.

  4. when Tron 2.0 came out I didn’t know the movie at all, I was very young. My brother bought the game and we played it and I was so blown away and fascinated by the world of that game.
The first scene where the main character gets scanned into the computer world was actually a bit scary for me at that time haha.
I also remember that when we played it back then, the game was waaay to hard for us, we probably didn’t understand some basic things about it, so we couldn’t progress without cheating.

Yeah, when I saw the screenshot of Tron 2.0 pleasant memories came back. That game was much better than the new movie or the game for the new movie! It’s a shame it wasn’t much modded at all…

Had to pick up the GOTY of Witcher 3, plus a few cheap indies like “Press X to Not Die”. I’m waiting for the bigger Christmas sale, which starts Dec. 22. And then we’ll see if anything else pops up.

Currently playing through Bioshock and Bioshock 2 — the remastered versions. Forgot how great these games were!

So I dunno where to ask this, so I just ask it here. Would there be another way to support the site with donation besides Pitchin with PayPal only?

    1. Hi, Sorry for the late reply. Well, you could donate directly via PayPal, but maybe that’s the issue – you don’t use PayPal. ANother option is to gift me games, which I would then use as prizes. Lastly, and it’s currently not accept new patrons (more details very soon) is my Patreon page. Currently, it set to a per project setting while I was on sabbatical and I will be resetting it back to per month very soon.

  7. I´m hyped for HardVille!

  8. Hey! I’ve been away a bit, sorry. It was a combination of being extremely busy with work and, to be honest, a bit discouraged when Phillip announced his sabbatical. I’ve been in enough forums and sites to know that’s usually the first sign of a site’s demise and I guess I didn’t want to go through that again. Glad to see it was just a scare!

Anyway, Tron 2.0! I wanted to play it for ages and finally got it last year on Steam. Add a few fan-made patches to get the game running on modern PCs and it’s pretty fun, if a bit repetitive. That said, it’s a very unique game thanks to its look and setting, so I definitely recommend everyone check it out at some point.

As for what’s up with me, I finally bought a PS4 (the Pro edition, the day after it hit shelves) and joined the current generation, three years in. I had some trouble figuring out what game to get first – I have this thing where every single first game I’ve gotten every generation has been mind-blowing to me, so I wanted to keep that going – and opted for Doom. It was the right choice! Amazing graphics that really justify the jump to this generation and a great experience. Now I’m playing Hitman: The Complete Season One, the sequel to one of my favorite games of all-time (Hitman: Blood Money), and it does not disappoint. Hitman’s my GOTY. Next up’s Fallout 4!

Hey, I forgot to mention this in the original post – TWHL just opened a competition to Remake A Half-Life map!

You can use Goldsource or Source, single player or multiplayer, and Opposing Force and Blue Shift maps are fair game too. Mappers take a look! Maps aren’t due until the end of February, so there’s plenty of time.

What’s up with your early 2016 videos (For example Prospekt or Strider Mountain part X) that your voice is echoing after some time?

    1. Yes, this is true. It’s because there were two microphones, it’s been fixed now.
