This Test Tube (short competition) challenged authors to create a blockout rather than a full map. Rough geometry, developer textures, the works – the idea being that by prototyping, testing, and refining the gameplay rather than the visuals, overall development of a level can be smoother and require less reworking. And maps in development can still be a blast!

Manual Installation Instructions
  • Make sure you have the Upcoming branch of the Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer installed in Steam and run at least once. (Properties – Betas – select upcoming from the dropdown list).
  • Copy the blockout folder into your SourceMods folder.
  • Restart or start Steam.
  • Blockout should now be listed in your Library tab.

    I don’t like competitions like these. They encourage mappers to release unfinished stuff that will probably never be finalised in the end, because why bother when the map has already been released?

      I half agree with this. It’s a great exercise for the mappers (which is also a huge factor when we chose the old Ville themes too) but sometimes not so great for the players. But there are some cool ideas in this mod.

      Totally agree with this, I think is a bit of a shame that RTSL now is basically exclusively dedicated to releasing these… “things”. Just maps and absolutely do not encourage nor release fully modded HL1 and HL2 anymore, that’s just sad as heck.

    Boy! I think this is a case where the content is better than I expected.

    This was enjoyable as most entries had nice quick combat and visuals.

    I probably didn’t understand the “block out” concept that well, I first believed that all of the entries were going to be just unpolished-unfinished maps that honestly represent a mapper block-out syndrome, so the gamers may help out testing those maps to give their feedback and help to cope with those mapping issues. BUT! This was not the case at all… It was in fact, a bunch of maps that seemed to be unfinished and unpolished, but were intended to be that way, as they are functional and playable maps indeed.

    So they were actually nice to play. The one I liked the most was the Strider dance entry, as it looked like a cool arena to battle Striders, and the one where you are a worker so you must fix all the issues with the broken machines. Apart from those the rest of the entries were OK to play so I think this one deserves a PN.
