AmbushVille Podcast

10th November 2013

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

In this podcast I talk to Mark Allen, Justin Carlton and Darren Weekes about their entries to the AmbushVille mod, their approach to building a map in such a short time and other mapping topics.

If you have any specific questions , please post them as comments and I or the guest will respond.

Important Note

Please accept my apologies, it seems that the sound between myself and the guests is out of sync.

I didn’t check carefully enough when I created the MP3, but the source is exactly the same.

I had to find a quick and dirty solution to record this podcast as the old PC I had to set up didn’t allow Pamela to work correctly.

If I haven’t bought a new PC or had my laptop repaired by the time of the next competition podcast is recorded, I will split the recording into 2 or three segments and that should avoid this issue.

The Audio is strangely off, but still an interesting Podcast.

Yes the timing is wonky, you guys are talking over each other particularly in the second half.

I agree though, still a good discussion and looking forward to the next 3×10!

  3. Thanks for the kind words about Temple Stand-in! I feel terrible it was no fun to play, but that you found the visuals pleasing is a comfort; it’s hardly an excuse for poor combat, but I’ve always felt most at home making the actual environments, so at least I’m not totally off base there.

It’s funny, I mentioned E.Y.E in a PP post some months ago, during one of the Steam sales. It looked interesting from the Giant Bomb Quick Look I saw, but although I grabbed it back then I still haven’t gotten around to playing it. I was certainly going for something along those lines, though, monolithic architecture and “climbing into the light” in the vein of a few particular Beksinski paintings.

Glad to hear my acting sounded natural to others, because I harmed it a bit with the processing. I applied dynamic range compression to a degree that destroyed some of the performance, and used an inverted compressor to act as a downward expander, but applied it too strongly. For some reason, beyond my experience level to understand, that made each line get suddenly loud in the last second or so. I’ve since discovered the Floorfish VST plugin I’ve had installed for so long is a combination expander/noise gate, and can do the job more effectively with no unexpected volume changes. Of course these things only make themselves known after the fact.

Wonderfully informative discussion! I can’t believe I’ve never listened to one of these before, I have to go back through all of them now.

Shame about the dodgy audio but that was really enjoyable. I’m really tempted to enter the next competition, although it would just be delaying my mod even further.

Excellent podcast, one of the best yet 🙂

    1. Glad you liked it. Just wish I had made one for all the other competitions too.

As a fan of Justin, I tried playing CrossbowVille and HalloweenVille, sadly they have some background vtf error, could you bother fixing them after steampipe, please?

  6. Guh, shame about the audio. But up until that, good stuff. Decompiling without actually having to decompile!
