Ladder

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

14th October 2012

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

Author’s Note: “Climb your way up the ladder of waves of enemies as the city crumbles around you.

This is a complex ladder-based map set in a dock-side town. Surrounding the small plaza are 4 story buildings and canals.

For those of you who do not know, a ladder map is one where waves of enemies come at you in ascending order so that it becomes more difficult as you progress.

The map is highly destructible and will crumble before your very eyes leaving nothing but the skeletons of buildings behind.”

  1. Phillip says Maybe

I tried this last year and the version I tried had so much stutter it was unplayable on my machine. I waited in the hope of a really optimized version but didn’t hear anything.

Vicpas sent me an email today reminding me about it, so I downloaded it from the author’s site and it seemed better.

That said, it was still a little slow for me.

I stopped after wave 13 as I had become bored.

The map itself is very well done, I just didn’t like the wave mechanic. To be honest, it seems almost too complicated for an SP map but perhaps with a proper soundtrack and soundscapes it could work as something larger.

    Too arcade-like for me.

  2. Maybe?

I concur with Phillip. The detailed setting promises much, but the “wave” gameplay gets boring very quickly. I didn’t make it past the Combine soldiers (wave 12?) before I’d had enough! Shame though, as significant effort has been expended, however the result tends to disappoint. Got one battery in the teleport (blasted thing WOULD NOT pick up!!); never found out what it was meant to do. Gameplay very stuttery – almost unplayable whenever things warmed up, frustratingly. Marks for effort, fewer for achievement sadly. Maybe a revamp will resuscitate…

    Maybe?

Yeah I remember played this about a year ago, when I found it on Mod DB, and I could say overall the concept is interesting, in fact that venetian plaza architecture style is quite outstanding, and felt quite a biit like a CSS map, but here I agree, the inmediate turn down aspect of this map it was its waving system of ennemys, I recommend the author if he wants, he may change the dynamic, some waves of ennemies ar ok if are there for a major reason, I mean I would have no problem at all resisting few waves, but if I will be rescued latter by a ressistance boat or air means, that for me would be a perfect setting for the map. Indeed I rather enjoy the destruction of the buildings, as that gives a sense of real battle aspect, but I think the only main lack for this work, is that just the wave combat is just too silly, for the place could be used soi much better into a more elaborated objective so if the author may add a little sense for resist in there, and after close the plot by escaping from there, like after a 20-25 min battle that could be just the perfect ammount of combat and entretainment this well done and interesting layout map could bring.

  4. Maybe?

I played up to level 20 and quit because I was bored. It was a nice looking level but I don’t like spawners in general. I really wanted to explore the other parts of the map that were blocked by force fields and leeches. Not my kind of map
