Two in a row from Dark Pivot. This one, as my description says, is a simple set of areas. Some are better than others but I suppose the best one is the first. The map starts with no time for the player to “see what lies ahead”.

That’s not to say it’s bad, because I actually like these kinds of starts.

Lighting is, the often used by beginners “coloured” and each are doesn’t really offer anything worthwhile.

The author needs to be taken under an experienced mappers wing and given some guided objectives.

This comment used to have an audio file but it was deleted. I decided to leave the recommendation image – Phillip

short, a little empty but the theme perfectly fits

    Play It Now!

This was short, but essentially sweet, and did make me jump at least twice, though I wasn’t being especially cautious I have to say. I did enjoy it, and hope that the author not only does get a little mentoring, but can be persuaded to make something else, perhaps with a bit more scope/scale.Still, for what it’s worth I happily give it a “Play it now” and a “well done.”

    Think Twice

This is going to be one of those old-fashion written reviews with all the normal bad grammar and poor spelling. First of all I think it’s fair to say what this mod does not have, it does not have a story, and it does not have structure or much in the way of progression, neither is it scary. it’s a mix between arena and normal type play and appears if the author was unsure what format to map. The set design is very basic with only the opening scene showing any thought to design and layout, but even this is very limited in incidental content with rest of the sets being completely bare.

I am sure this must be early days for the author who is starting on the learning curve that hopefully will lead to better things in the future. In the mean time only play this if you are desperate for 5 minutes of very basic HL.

  7. Zombie-Hunter

I don’t know you people, but I think most of the maps (SP user-made) for HL2 kinda suck… They’re just way too simplistic and lack both imagination and originality; whereas HL1 maps are just amazing for the most part. Just take a look at wonders like: Vengeance, The Ropes, Edge of Darkness, HL: Escape, etc… (all of them for HL1)
So far the only HL2 user-made maps worth playing (and replaying) are the ones relased by all-mighty Leon Brinkman.

    Nuff Said.

  8. Robspace 1

Zombie Hunter-I couldn’t disagree with you more. There are many great HL2 mods. Have you tried Minerva? Rock 24? or how about the one I’m playing now CSS SCI-F1 2? I haven’t ried this one yet but you should look at more of the HL2 mods available here.

  10. Zombie-Hunter

Robspace 1, although I respect your opinion, I still believe that most SP maps for HL2 are boring.
But yeah, you’re right about Minerva and Rock 24, those two mods are just amazing (how could I totally forget them?).
Anyway, I’ll take your advice and look more carefully into PP HL2 section 😉

  11. Robspace 1

Zombie-Hunter, I just prefer the overall look of the HL2 game and mods. The designs and weapons and mapping is much better IMO. Just Like Valve imroved with time, so did it’s mod makers. I agree with you that alot of the storylines can use improvement though. There are some that should never have been released. They were not ready for prime time. You need to really take time to go through the list. Maybe check out Phillips list of the highest rated ones. That’s got some of the best one as well as the best of 08″ list he’s putting together. One author that knows how to make great mods from both sources is Adam Foster. His work on Hl1 mods carried over to the HL2 universe perfectly, almost like another episode. But then Adam’s a rare breed.

  12. Maybe?

It’s just a bit of fun, great fun, briefly. No more no less.

  13. Maybe?

Very short, and the majority of the scares are jump-scares; no atmospheric creepiness (a la Silent Hill) here.
Worth a quick play if you want some cheap thrills.

  14. Maybe?

It may be that the beginning was the best part. Some other areas were interesting as well, since I didn’t necessarily go slow.

However, I wasn’t even scared–it never fails, an author puts something in but I’m looking at something else when whatever-it-is is supposed to scare me. For which I’m just as glad, actually, since I don’t really “do” scary. But I did jump once or twice.

  15. Maybe?

I downloaded this, but when I started it it was in a seaside abandoned town. Like some thing out of the old west.. maybe I haven’t gone far enough, but none of the screenshots look anything like what comes up..
