Mr. Deathwish Part 1

for Half-Life 2

13th October 2006

Author’s Note

The idea is simple, you are an assassin and you will need to complete certain missions. The missions will come to you via email or post. At least in this first part. When you’ve read your briefing, you can start your mission.

Not all information is given in the email or post, you will receive the rest during the mission. When you are in the city, don’t mess around or the cops will surely kill you. Check the environment and the people in city. There’s always more than one solution to complete the mission. Sometimes even without firing a single shot.

I really like a lot this one. it was different from what we saw before and the idea a multiple “puzzle” that you have to solve what great even if it was not always evident….

    ceraintly a recommanded one

  2. different was what I liked also.plus it was challenging since there was no direction to go aftr the first mission.actually to be honest the only reason I got to the second part was because I looked at the screen shots on the homesite and seen what background it was.

  3. Dufferx

Didn’t care for it. Which doesn’t make it a bad effort.

  4. I’ve just stopped playing this. It keep juttering and I could understand exactly what I was supposed to do.

Whilst I applaud ALL efforts to do new things I generally prefer to be given a weapon and have my objective clearly introduced. But as Dufferx says, that doesn’t mean it’s not a great mod, it’s just not the kind of start I like.

    The Abandoned Workshops Syndicated Review

    Gameplay:
Something new and fresh for Half Life 2, with an unlinear start. You start in your flat and learn about your mission in the basement with a few other interesting things about, especially as the text explains some objects around the area to make them mean something which kept it a little immersing. You then enter a small city area and must follow small tasks to complete your mission yet it can get a little confusing but possible and fun. There’s different ways to complete this section and completely up to the player but after you escape in the sewer the action is rather average throughout until the end, with very few other neat moments but gameplay here is still rather typical.

    Design:
A little above average in most places, with some good use of props and some very good texturing. The structure for most of the buildings internally and externally were rather decent but some areas didn’t look as good as the rest, like the ones closer to the end for example. Lighting was average, it wasn’t exactly bad nor was it great but still fit quite well throughout the map.

    Conclusion:
New and fresh gameplay with a decent design although some areas could have been better.

Well I give up. Are there mission instructions somewhere other than the clipboard? I have no idea how to get into the sewer. Any clues would be appreciated…

  7. when you are on the top of the building and get out by crashing the window, just on the ground you will see a steel circle cover (those are typical from sewer access) if you go close to it and type use it will open

  8. Pablo

Sorry to ask, but – top of the building? After stacking boxes I still can’t seem to climb the ladder. Am I overlooking something?

  9. Just in the second screen (image 02.jpg) you see a green car and a combine behind normally after entering the building recieving the box (with the shotgun incide) you need to go to an upperfloor (don’t remenber why and how?. After you will break the window and get on a kind of repearing platform that will break under your weight then you could fall on boxes (they are just behind the left lateral wall of the buiding in screen2) and just on the ground there is a manhole cover accessing the sewer than can be open.

OK as far as it went, which was just two levels comprising chapter 1. First level was to carry out your mission with the second level making ones escape. The first level is a sequence of acts that leads you to your kill; this is achieved by carefully following the screen messages. The second level involves action for the first time but nothing challenging. So has the mod stand there is not a lot once you figure out your way through level one, however this could be a start to a good mod if the authors go on and build upon I promising start. Reading some of the above comments it would appear that some players have had trouble figuring out level 1, read the on screen messages carefully I normally pause and read them through a few times. Just to add that design and textures were good and that we should encourage the authors to go on and complete a game worthy of this promising start.

On screen messages? I’m starting to get the feeling I haven’t installed this map correctly. Exactly what do you do in the basement of the flat? What are the remote bomb and timer device for? And when you meet your ally on the balcony and get your HV suit, how do you proceed?

ok in one instance, I shot the guy, in the other I planted the bomb from the hotel behind him and ran back to the hotel and blew it up, which of course was very cool and I was about to concider the author the coolest man alive for making this when I realised the same result for the first part… you cant kill the guy. I sat there knifing and shotguning him at point blank and the guy gets realy bloody but never dies? what the hell???

A potentially great idea. Sadly, it’s been so poorly implemented as to make it virtually unplayable.

The architecture and mapping are basic. The music is so loud you can’t hear your mission brief (and I did try turning it down). The props are confusing (it’s not a post card it’s a newspaper!!!)…

Unfortunately once I’ve started something I hate giving up so I’m going to persevere till I finish this abomination.

    Maybe?

I agree with others, it’s a nice idea but not too well executed. It’s often difficult to hear what the people are saying, you should consider adding Closed Captions.

After killing the target I found it VERY difficult to make my escape. First I tried running down the apartment stairs, only to be greeted by several metrocops with guns. Not good. Then I tried to climb down the ladder outside the window but couldn’t manage to grab hold of it. I ended up plummetting down on to the boxes in the alleyway, which left me with about 40 health. Trying to get into the sewers with a metrocop shooting me reduced me to about 20. Then you have to fight a Combine soldier with a SHOTGUN and you’re armed with just a crowbar! Did the author even play this?? It’s very hard!!

Generally it’s OK but nothing to write home about.

  16. Maybe?

Played 2 along time ago.Thought it was listed here too but it seems to be gone?

Anyway I reinstalled this one but tried something different.Instead of having it install maps to maps etc etc I turned it into a mod to put into sourcemods folder and it worked.Second time I tried doing this.Pretty esy to do also.

It’s an ok mod but very short.Music is very loud but controlable through options. There really isn’t much shooting/killing here just do your mission and getaway.I think I used 11 shells and the buggy gun at the end.

Couldn’t play it – had a “black screen on reload” bug, but more significantly on both my attempts to play this Breen didn’t appear in his apartment building, so I couldn’t proceed. I wandered around holding the box but if he doesn’t spawn you’re stuck. I did follow exactly the sequence shown in the video walkthrough – the first time by accident, the second time (after quitting out of the game, uninstalling, reinstalling, and starting again from the beginning) after watching the walkthrough to make sure I wasn’t doing anything dumb. The ladder outside his building is annoying because there are crates around so you can easily reach it, but you can’t climb it, which doesn’t make sense. The game looks pretty good and I’d love to play it, but it seems to have a fatal bug on my system at least.
