MapTap is now available!

1st October 2011

Update: MapTap has been replaced by Gauge.

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

I am incredibly pleased to announce that MapTap is now available! It has its own project website, but this post is just to make sure as many potential users as possible hear about it.

In addition, I am also announcing a special giveaway for confirmed users of the application.

On the 31st October I will be randomly selecting a user and sending them the following games:

Serious Sam: First Encounter and Serious Sam: Second Encounter have been donated by Vic from LambdaGeneration and Iron Grip: Warlord is an anonymous donation.

Here is how the giveaway will work

Every installation of MapTap that has been used at least once, receives a special key connected to their installation ID. I will announce the winner of the games by their ID. They will then have to send me their key and once I confirm it matches, I will send the games to you.

MapTap DOES NOT collect ANY private information or details from users.

For complete information about the application, including download link, FAQ and videos, please visit its home page: MapTap.

MapTap: Manage your Source maps with ease!

Just a quick update.

It’s become clear to me that I haven’t done enough to ensure readers know what files can and can’t be used with MapTap. It was never my intention to just release the application adn let readers find those files themsevles, but I should have made it easier from the start.

I have made some changes to the site, and will continue to do so, that will help MapTap users.

Firstly, I have created a new TAG, called MapTap. All new files that can use MapTap will have this tag added. In addition, the frontpage and archives now display whether a file can be used with MapTap, it’s displayed under the download total.

Unfortunately, I still have to backdate that TAG to all the maps, so at the moment only some EP2 maps have it. I spent an hour this morning updating 95 EP2 files, splitting then into Maps and Mods. I promise to do all the files for all the games eventually.

The problem is that some of the older files are still in RAR format, and I will have to change those to 7zip, which is even more work.

I have created a MapTap link on the Visual Tags page, along with an RSS feed to help you stay up to date on which files can be used.

Lastly, I will be editing all the maps that can use MapTap to have a direct use and download link, so users can simply click the graphic nad have everything taken care of by the application.

It’s a lot of work, but I feel it’s worth it.

hi could someone please explane why after I installed maptap I cannor see any of my installed mods ?

      1. Are you saying that you can’t see via, your Steam Library, ANY mods that you had previously installed?

None of the testers encountered such a serious issue. MapTap does not connect with Steam at all, but it does scan for Steam accounts.

  2. thank you for this phillip. I do not play a lot of short maps because it is just not worth the install, downloading the developers screen, launching them and then trying to remember where they are to remove them. but, now I can tap that map baby. now breen and the combine will get a “tap tap” also know ans the double tap, or maybe just a wack wack with my ole trusty crowbar. thanks again.

This really is a super bit of software. All the little maps accessible in one place. Genius!

‘Fraid I don’t really understand how the competition works, though. Special key? Installation ID?

    1. You don’t need to do anything regarding the comp. The special ID and key is to stop cheats and count how many people have actually installed MapTap, rather than just downloaded it.

      1. MikeS

Ah, okay. Thanks for confirming that, Phillip.

Oh damn, this is awesome, because now I can actually be arsed to play maps.

You know what I would love to see in the next version if possible? Some kind of way of navigating a list of the maps/mappacks available here on PlanetPhillip and being able to download and install them from the same program just by selecting one.

If that happened I would be like 😀

Of course, whether that happens or not this is still awesome.

getting 404 error when trying to download. Link points to: http://www.planetphillip.com/projects/maptap/maptap.exe I do not believe IE v9 will allow for downloading an EXE. Can you change to zip or 7z?

    1. Sorry about that, I have fixed the link now and tested it in IE9. Please refresh the page and try again.

It’s interesting to note that most of the graphics are missing from the site. I am sure I tested it in IE9 previously and everything was fine.

Please add MapTap links to Hall of Fame maps! 🙂

    1. I can’t because 99% of the Hall of Fame are mods.

Also, ALL maps 7zip map files downloaded from this site SHOULD work with MapTap. The only thing the newer maps have is the direct link, but I’ll try and back date those eventually too.

Thank you for the program and for your work on it, Phillip.
Will the contest winning key be announced in this thread’s comments or in a new post on the site?

It totally is! This helps really much.

Amazing app, makes being able to play maps A LOT easier!

    Thanks

  10. Used it the other day to install the great escape and gravity mortar, at first it didn’t seem to work but I now know there’s a short delay. For the uninstall that worked to a point as the great escape’s .ain file remained.

    Overall works OK.

    1. We are working on a progress bar, show that should help.

Tell me more about that ain file. Are you saying it was left in the “Roaming/MapTap” folder and just got renamed?

Did you install TGE manually first?

      1. Hi Phillip.

The full path to it is

        C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\username\half-life 2 episode two\ep2\maps\maps\graphs

        I can’t find a “Roaming/MapTap” folder and I didn’t install TGE manually first.

        If it helps I’m running Win7 64bit.

        1. This is a little strange, I’ll look into it.

  11. Sorry to bother you, Phillip but I have used the program and I do not know where the giveaway ID is. Help?

    1. There are two pieces of information. The ID and the Key . They are in the About section. Don’t worry, you still have 3 weeks until I announce a winner.
