When the author first emailed me about this mod I was a little worried it would turn out to be the kind of mod built for showcase portfolios, you know, the ones that look fantastic but have little or no gameplay.

After I started playing it that feeling didn’t go away, that was until I encountered my first enemy, then I was hooked.

    Visuals
Just look at the screenshots to see the detail. Since the mod takes place all indoors, underground in fact, it’s hard to make the mod look as beautiful as some of the outdoor scenes in EP2, coupled with the limiting nature of a metro station, Fredrick has done a great job.

Once or twice I remember thinking that something looked a little strange but that happens in all mods.

    Sound
It’s clear that when this mod was made sound was taken seriously and the music used is both new and well-suited to the situations. I wish more mods would think about this aspect.

    Gameplay
Without wanting to spoil it for you, the start is one of exploration, that is until you encounter your first enemy. From then on it’s a nice balance between finding the right path and killing things.

No “Puzzle” was too hard and neither were the battles.

    Layout and Design
The layout is complicated enough to make it seem interesting without making it hard to figure out where to go. There was plenty of variety in room size, shape and atmosphere, so no worries there.

    Hall Of Fame Justification
I made this a HOF because I felt that it was visually sufficiently different from most mods to warrant all players” attention. It also had some nice settings and good gameplay. Overall, it has that little “extra” that most mods lack.

    Summary
It was made by one person, who is 18 years old, and that’s pretty impressive, at least to me. He clearly has talent and I *really* hope he makes a lot more mods. Unfortunately I fear he will get a job as a professional game developer and the HL community will have lost him (how many pro make mods in their spare time? Not many).

My only negative comment was that it wasn’t packaged as a proper mod, which I am told is quite easy to do.

The mod is fun to play and looks pretty damn good. Get playing.

    5 Words Or Less Review

    Getting lost can be fun!

  2. I’d love to play this but do not dare because of this in the readme ‘these files does replace some of the original Valve content, but they are easy to delete’
Am I overly sensitive? Replace seems to mean that original Valve content is lost but then Delete means that the files are in addition. But I extracted to a dummy folder and there is a lot of files!

    1. Brian

Maybe someone will package this for us so we can put it in the Sourcemod folder! I hope, I hope!!

      1. Installation is pretty easy even without it being a proper mod.

        1. Yes, but it is not the installation that’s the problem. It’s restoring your original EP2 files afterwards. PP, has it affected your EP2 please?

          1. Not to my knowledge, it didn’t overwrite any original files.

            1. OK, I’ll give it a whirl this evening then by extracting to a dummy file and copying to EP2. That way I can identify the files to delete when I’m done – if I want to of course given your HOF

              1. cubedude89

Its impossible to overwrite your ep2 files, everything is inside the GCF’s in your steamapps folder.
I can see why the readme says it replaces because the source engine does look for the mod files first before it looks in the GCFs. So if you were to play ep2 it would use the files you installed for this mod. But once you delete the files it will resort back to whats in the GCF.

  3. hl2-fan

here’s real easy way to copy Subway mod files into ep2 without altering any original files:

    1) extract rar to desktop
    2) copy (or cut) materials, models & sound folders into ep2 folder
    3) copy redwell 1,2 bsp into ep2 maps
    4) copy redwell 1,2 ain into maps/graphs
    5) copy redwell 1,2 cache into maps/soundcache

Sounds like a job for andyb.

    Play It Now!

I was a bit skeptical before downloading it, but now I’m sure this is a great level pack. I’m looking forward to full version (good luck, whoever you are).

  6. Play It Later

Very, Very good and a must play but not a PIN because it is a bit short. What PP says is smack on.
The bad news? from his site “One of the reasons that this project dead, is that I have started working on Unreal 3.0 engine’. Unreal, dear me.
Bon voyage, Frederik. Thanks for this.

    1. I’ve just recieved an email from the author and he says that the positive feedback hsa convinced him to work on part 2.

  7. The file now linked to is a proper SourceMod and has been kindly supplied by andyb.

The installation instructions have also been updated.

    Play It Now!

First of all, thanks to andyb for putting these maps into an easy to load mod format.

Certainly these two levels have the potential to be developed and expanded in to a classic of its kind. I very much enjoyed the gradual build up of the action and the exploration of well constructed sets with layouts that just invited the player deeper into the plot.

Ok, so far so good with a great eye for detail the author has hooked us in. However, as it stands it’s a meaningless incomplete effort without a story line with a pointless finish. The key word here is potential and without a doubt the author has the ability to conclude this mod into one worth a HOF inclusion.

By expanding by at least two additional levels to include Combine combat and maybe topside street action set between two stations, the mod could progress with a constructed story and express the true and full ability of the author.

As it stands it’s not HOF status and needs to be completed to be worth any classification above fair to good.

Looking forward to more output from this very talented mapper.

I haven’t tried the normal version, but with the MOD version, I have no crosshair, and hl2.exe keeps crashing every time I exit the game

    1. andyb

Not sure why no crosshair.Just type crosshair 1 into the console thou if you have that problem. As for the crashing I get that on alot of ep2 mods. Not sure why but at least it only crashes on exit and not during game.Dont think its any thing I did.Worked fine on my laptop, just desktop crashed on exit but I figured it was the cheap video card I have.

There were a few innovative areas here, but I really hated the “Game Hints” that kept popping up. I like a bit of exploration, but the gunplay came too little too late. Still, I’ll be waiting to play any further mods from the author!

    Play It Later

Simply having a defined beginning, middle, and end justify a high rating.

The beginning is pretty quiet and lonely, which is a good feeling to have. This place feels alive in a way.

The horror bits are very cool and creepy. The short train-dodging areas are the best parts in the game.

The comic-book finish, although poorly written, is something new and interesting.

The brushwork was interesting and in most cases, realistic. I liked crawling around in the rafters and falling into an area that appeared off-limits, only to discover that the author stacked some boxes up for us to get out with.

I look forward to a part two, or perhaps a redux of this level in the future. The mod seemed to end right as it was getting interesting.

  12. Anonymous

Visuals good, but the infinite spawning enemies at the end was kinda crappy, as well as the whole “instadeath if you jump on the floor too early’. Why not let me fight the antlions wherever I want, instead of forcing me on that narrow catwalk with rebels in the way?

Good music though. I saved it to my HD.

  13. Play It Later

Sad that it’s just a demo!
The visuals are very stunning and the brushwork is very nice. The puzzles are way too easy for my taste and there are a bit too less fights. I also don’t like how the story gets told, ever reading a “you:” just doesn’t look good. Also the intro music is horrible 😛
Really sad that it’s a stopped mod, could have become something good.

    1. See my comment further up and about the author continuing it.

  14. The Pain
    Maybe?

I truly hate to be “that guy” but while I enjoyed the mod, I could not see past some of the flaws.

Certain hallways my frame-rate would drop suddenly if I looked at certain innocuous areas (the floor, slightly to the right). Many walls had incorrect texture placement or simply nonsensical textures. (Apartment Windows around the ceiling, wood vents leading directly into metal ventilation ducts, weird glass hallways that simply completely changed the theme of the room without purpose or flow. Very low-detail textures used in the end cinematic).

These are all of course minor details, but unfortunately that which destroyed my enjoyment were the constant player hints. Some were completely useless, others you had to be given in order to understand what to do next. When you must literally spell out to the player what it is he should do next it seems you have made a grave error in your design.

Fix the bizarre textures, remove, or at least delay the hints for one minute if the player has not figured out what to do, and perhaps rethink the layout of some areas to make the goals more clear to the player and I will gladly give this five stars.

  15. Think Twice

    Only the visuals is good.

  16. Play It Later

The calm beginning is a well done buildup. High quality indoor environments, with many details. Well used new music. I think it could have benefited to have some more interesting combat or puzzles thought. Totally worth playing.

  17. Play It Later

This was just a demo? I didn’t know that ’til I finished and it told me.

The hints were a little too helpful–it seems to me that anyone playing this would have played through HL2 and the Episodes, and wouldn’t need them. (I especially didn’t like “press E to use the door” when all the keys had been changed and I think Enter had become the Use key.)

The train section was very good. The canister idea was interesting, but not really worth it–I thought I’d figured out how they moved, but kept taking damage myself so just used the crowbar.

All in all, I think this mod is worth playing, and definitely worth more chapters!

  18. Play It Later

i enjoyed it, eeVee comment above has it right, I felt the same. I too would like to see this expanded.

  19. aq_guy

Very nice mod; look forward to more from this author.

Well that bot or w/e made me play this and it was quite alright. It’s got its own feel to it and makes good use of custom textures. I felt bit stuck at times but not for long.
So yea, give this a play 🙂
