HMS Defiance 2

for Half-Life 2

26th December 2008

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

HMS Defiance 2 is set prior to the event of HMS Defiance. Set in 1942, you play as Stephen Cartwright – a hired specialist on the HMS Defiance, a research ship intended to conduct research on state of the art technology.

HMS Defiance 2 takes the player to the HMS Defiance, a mysterious and ancient temple and even to a space habitat that has went wary.

Story is told through dialogue, the note system and the environment. The note system offers a way for those interested in the story to dig deeper into it and for those less so to skim over it.

HMS Defiance’s story unveils gradually throughout the mod and players who take time to look for the story (via readable notes and the environment) will be able to discover more of the plot.

This mod is not set within the Half-Life universe, so don’t expect Combine or headcrabs.

You only have two weapons which is something I liked, a wrench and a pistol. The enemies seemed stronger than in the original HL2 but on easy it wasn’t a problem.

I don’t really understand the need for face mask but perhaps I missed a clue from the first Defiance mod.

Mn only gripe is the script writing. Whilst it’s great that the authors have included voice acting and story elements, the actual scripts never really sound natural. It seems that everybody thinks they can write.

All in all a great little mod, but not polished enough to make the Hall Of Fame 2008.

I am looking forward to their next release.

    Think Twice

I found this mod to be quite dull and frustrating, the combat was repetitive and I couldn’t find any health pick-ups anywhere so after a while I just gave up. The levels are also under-detailed and from what I saw they seems to devolve into corridor->small room->corridor after the initial climb up the snow.

The custom models and textures give the mod a unique look, especially the face masks, but I really did not like them myself, however others may welcome the change in visuals.

This mod is both boring and tedious and while I was not expect too much having remembering how shallow HMS D1 was, I hoped that this would be a more worth while release.

Best that I can say is that it’s playable without any bugs or crashers, at least on my machine, but apart from that there is little to recommend it. it’s very linear in the boring sense with nothing to entice the player off a tedious line of reading page after page from books all saying the same thing.

The combat is about has one dimensional you can get, with the same figures just motionlessly placed in front for you to knock over like skittles. That’s it, that the depth of the game and just to top that it has no constructed ending, leading one to fear the worst, yes HMS D3. By the way if you are expecting this to have any thing to do with a ship, then don’t.

    HMS Defiance 2 Developer speaking.

I think it’s all a matter of opinion, personally. Some people like different types of games. What one will find interesting another may find boring and vise versa.

I’m happy enough that you do not like the mod and have no problem with that.

I think your comment on the note system is, however, a little unfair (if I may say so). You don’t have to read pages and pages of anything. It is completely optional, save for one book, to even open them. I personally like readable content in games – such as in AVP2 – and so decided to put it in my mod. I did not hide codes in them or essential information, however. It is only really there for people who want to read them or dig into the story a bit more. They certainly do not all say the same thing.

You may, however, be right about NPC placement. I’ll admit, I could have had them ambush your or something a little more.

    Just my own thoughts.

Phillip, how does this mod finish? Having read the books killed a few big heads I finished-up back at the start having gone down a snowy path.

At the bottom there should be a portal to go back to the ship. Once there you ahev another mission to complete before the end.

Screenshot 28 shows the portal at the bottom of the path.

    Maybe?

Hi Aaron nice of you to take the time to respond. Sometimes when writing negative reviews you tend not to think of the people behind the game, so when being negative it’s about the playing aspect of the mod and not the author or team.

You are right I did not like the mod and could not wait for it to finish, but having said that I feel I should add more as to why, and in some way by more constructive on what I feel may improve your work from a players point of view.

First off the mod is very shallow in gameplay and you should stop to think what you have not given the player. I think that you should always put yourself in the place of the player and say what I would want from a FPS. In this case we have very little, no puzzles, no searching or climbing about, no variety of scenery, sets, environment, content, combat and cast. Yes I know all this is ambitious and most custom mods cannot expect to cover all these elements, but it seems to me a waste of mapping not to include the un-expected, the ambush, thus feeding doubt into the player’s mind so making things more intense. Your sets, whilst repetitive did give the opportunity to develop and include a sense of unease but the gameplay did not, instead we only had very one dimensional combat with little else throughout the mod to challenged or incite the player.

Sometimes developers can be too clever and think what is cools will also go down well with the player, for me it don’t work that way. The player is not in your head, he does not know whether it is essential to read all the text or not, it may contain hints on how to progress, like including too many doors that don’t open or too many crates that hold nothing, the player will switch off and just not bother.

    Mel.

I can’t even get past the first part! I’m supposed to head down to the armory, but the
doors are locked and I can’t get out.

  9. Mel

    Have you found the suit?

  10. Mel

Regarding comment #9; I think I got my mods mixed-up.

  11. desertalienz

No suit. I was stuck at the very beginning, after going to see the captain, he sends you down to the armory. I found no doors that would open, so eventually I no clipped into the portal room. After that it only got worse! I am more than half way through, but so far, its pretty bad. One of the more annoying things is the one gun only. This is a FPS, keyword on SHOOTER. We all play these games to “SHOOT.” Having only 1 gun, that is SOOO inaccurate due to the recoil, is frustrating & boring! If there was going to be only one gun, it should have been a more accurate 9 mm or SOMETHING! The guardians have automatic weapons against your 6 shooter.. ughhhh! There is health around in the form of small little green bottles, but not enough of them. A few health dispensers on the wall, most are already spent though. To me the graphics look more like Half Life one. Will play to the end and see… And oh yeah, how many ways can YOU spell Librarians??? I mean, even this website has a spell checker. Not super important, just professional…

    Avoid It!

Ok, finished it.. Overall kind of reminds me of the first Quake, with a story. All’s I can say, is can’t wait to get my hand on a shotgun and a grenade!

  13. Play It Later

Not bad, but a bit dull sometimes, still a solid mod though.

  14. Play It Later

I try to leave a comment as I stumble through and spot one I’ve played and actually remember.

Not too many special things about this one, though I did enjoy the change of environment. The maps in the configuration of a large ship at sea at night were confusing, but with once you found your way around the combat was challenging enough and hell, Alyx was there ( Nuff said ). Well worth a rainy day nod to me.

  15. Curious, as I read the (old) reviews here, everyone talks about having 1 weapon and a wrench. Maybe I have a newer version? In addition to the Webly pistol, I had a Thompson smg. It has maximum ammo carried per mission of 250 rounds. The weapon skins and animations had a “Return to Castle Wolfenstein” look and feel to them

As for the mod itself, in comparison to most mods available to the player today, it’s pretty dull and somewhat silly in it’s presentation of what could have been an interesting story.

My first impressions come from the visual presentation. It seems the visual cues(and title) pointed to being on a ship at sea during the 1940’s. But it was overly simplified. Too much so. For such a small map, more detail would have made it more visually appealing.

I looked at the bed in what I presumed was my cabin and wondered where the mattress was. How was I supposed to “get some rest” on that frame? Whose cabin was next door?

When I met the “Captain”, I laughed so hard I had to replay the scene a second time to hear what he said. (The hat! I could not understand the hat! I walked around him several times, just looking at the hat!)

“Er, um, what? I’m sorry, but it seems that there’s a pie plate on your head, could you repeat what you just said?”.

What’s up with the gas masks? Why do they have them? Should I be wearing one? Why do the Librarians have them and why do they look like “modified bleach bottles”?

First mission. Retrieve the Book of All Knowledge. Really? Okay, seems straightforward enough. It was. In the various texts I found and read pertaining to the Librarians, I was on the “Traitors” side! No wonder he left those morons. (That’s just a personal view.)

The second mission showed some improvement. The visual cues here were helpful. The mission was somewhat disappointing also. Maybe some more puzzles? more enemies? More could have been done with this map.

After returning, and following the same indicated routine(resting on that horrible bed!), I return to Captain Hat, and….he’s changed his office around? Why? Was he as bored as I was? He takes the object and disappears in a puff of light. You read his book and think, “meh, I knew you were playing me anyway.” and go back to the Portal room after picking up some more ammo.(where else?).

The final mission seems to be a null set. Nothing happens. Where am I? Portal Guy is kaput. Now what? Okay, read the posters,…hmm, I infer that Captain Hat has been up to no good?

    Done.

    1. Maybe?

I thought about giving it a “Think Twice” rating, but thought that was too harsh. The author did spend some time and effort on it. It just seemed too silly for my taste.

I’ll say “Maybe?”,…hey, you might be curious enough to see what I’m talking about, and then again, maybe you’ll think twice.
